Dear AROHO Friends,

I can't believe that it has been almost a month since our 2009 retreat. What a wonderful time we all had! Our faculty, special guest Rita Dove, and participants helped to make this retreat unforgettable. The Perseid Meteor shower provided us with a fabulous night-sky light show as the coyotes serenaded us. We left refreshed, renewed and recommitted to our writing.

Our Gift of Freedom Winner, Barb Johnson read from her soon-to-be-released book, More of This World or Maybe Another, a collection of award-winning short fiction. Barb is generous, humble, and funny. She's also a superb writer.

After hearing Barb read, I felt as though I knew these characters. The stories are set in New Orleans, which is more than just a back drop, she's the fabric upon which these stories are embroidered.

Here's a link to the Harper Collins site. You can also order advance copies at major on-line booksellers or your local independent booksellers.

Here's a link to the book:

Hope you are enjoying the fall! I'll be back soon with more exciting AROHO news.

Hello AROHO Friends,

I am sitting in the library at Ghost Ranch looking out a window at the magnificent red rock face of a mesa as we start the morning sessions of our retreat. Kim Ponders opened the retreat last night, introducing faculty members and scholarship winners who would not be here without the generous support of our supporters. Your donations, both large and modest, have brought deserving women writers here to the Land of Enchantment. Thank you so very much.

Mary Johnson and Darlene Chandler Bassett spoke of their founding AROHO, a reality born of the need to tell one's story and to find meaning in a time of grief. One of the retreatants remarked how electrifying the "strong woman energy" was in the room last night. Afterward, Lauren Baldwin (winner of the Marg Chandler Memorial Scholarship) hosted our reception.

But this morning, all is quiet save for the occasional clicking of a writer's keyboard or the whooshing of a computer booting up. This year I am a free agent, which means that I am not studying with a faculty member but am writing on my own, attending classes, and going to readings.  I need to get writing now and continue to apply the seat of my pants to the seat of my chair...one of the best pieces of writing advice I know.

Just thought I’d send you all a dispatch from the retreat and encourage you to continue to support AROHO in any way that you can. I also wanted to give a shout out to those of you who are alumni, faculty members and participants alike, to tell you that you are missed.

Check out our main website!

Mira Bartók is a generous, committed, adventurous writer! I had the pleasure of meeting her at AROHO's 2005 retreat. She has also made one of the most outstanding contributions to the arts, and to artists, that I've seen on the web, and that is the creation of Mira's List. The list, researched and compiled by Mira, is a free service for all artists. Here is a description of Mira's List from the masthead of her blog:
MIRA'S LIST
GRANTS. FELLOWSHIPS. RESIDENCIES. RESOURCES.
Mira's List is a free service for artists, writers, composers and others in the arts. Here you will find up-to-date information, resources and deadlines for grants, fellowships and international residencies. Money, time and a place to create.

When I first found Mira's list, I spent hours browsing the many fellowship and residency listings and following  links to organizations that I would not have known about otherwise. Mira’s List is an invaluable resource for the serious artist, visual, literary, and musical, among others. Here is a link to Mira's List:
Make sure you give yourself time to browse, to think, to dream, and then act! Thinking and dreaming will not advance your career in the arts if you do not avail yourself of the opportunity to create and commit yourself to the hard work of applying for those opportunities.

Oh, have fun, too! Mira’s List is enjoyable!

Hello Friends,

I've just taken a break from grading papers, cleaning my little apartment to make it ready for the return of my daughter from a semester away at college, and doing some carework for a family member. As is my custom to relax for a few minutes, I randomly pull a book from my shelf, open it, and read.  I call it “book grazing.”

This is what I just found, and wanted to share it with you. It reminds me why an organization like A Room of Her Own Foundation is essential.

What I find remarkable about this piece is that it was written over 150 years ago, and it resonates with me so keenly here, in the 21st Century. Perhaps it shall with you, too.

"Women never have an half-hour in all their lives (except before and after anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up late, or, more rarely, get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have 'no time in the day to themselves'."

It is remarkable that Florence Nightingale speaks to us from a gulf of over a century and that her words are still so relevant.

How many of you write late into the night or get up early in order to do so? Imagine a room of your own and time and money to write!

Here is AROHO's mission statement. Take a look and see why we exist, and consider supporting us in any way that you can. Maybe you’d like to honor a creative woman in your life with a small donation.
