the photographer Peter Gibson was at the Brooklyn show a few weeks back; I've been enjoying his photos, which speak in their own way about this new musical season

Recent news from jonnyrodgers.com:

As of September 3rd, 2009
Just outside of Bend, Oregon, during a trip to the west coast, visiting family, friends, playing shows, etc...  I did a show just outside of Eugene, Oregon last week, before which we combed all of the thrift-stores in town for a working set of Wine Glasses.  Though a little chipped, slow to speak and rough around the edges, I managed to do a fun and compelling show with them, in conjunction with a fundraiser for mine and Desirea’s upcoming trip to Cambodia with Love146.  I’ve been a spokesperson for Love146 for some time, so I’m glad to begin doing more extensive work with them in the fall.  More on that as the fall advances...  I’m leaving the Wine Glasses with a twelve-year-old pianist named Mercy who spent the after-show party playing the glasses with unbroken concentration.  I thought it was interesting and fitting, since I’d performed Peter Gabriel’s Mercy Street on glasses as my last song.
Desirea and I also visited Portland and Seattle during our trip here, wonderful cities each, and alluring in different ways.  I also spent an enjoyable afternoon at my father’s church in Sacramento, CA, playing a hand-built replica of a 17th century German church pipe organ, complete with a manual-pump-bellows and Nightingale Stop, all in quarter-comma-meantone temerament.  Pure Thirds!!!  Wolves!!!
Visits to lava fields at 5000 foot elevation, and riding former cow-herd horses down dusty Oregon high-desert trails.  Even finding some time to wrestle with the soon-to-be-released extended-single for Spare Them All, the choral song recorded during the Aviary sessions, along with some new goodies which I’ll leave as a surprise.
I’ve been playing some “lovely shows” with John Biatowas on violin; just the two of us in various cities.  Keep your eyes open for us in September.

BlueFly and the Bee from the New Haven Green in June '09

This video was shot on the New Haven Green in June - New Song for Wine Glasses

Thursday, June 18, 2009
This song is one I've been working on this month.  My good friends Nathan and Katie were staying over and they shot this vid of me rehearsing in the morning with my Wine Glasses and Guitars.  Still a song in progress (SIP), but gratifying on many levels.

Also, I just did a great little show at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn last night (with violinist John Biatowas) and I was sent this motion-pic, shot from the audience:

There's nothing like modern technology... Breaking news on new songs!

Enjoy this one, still in development.

I just saw The Brothers Bloom in the theater the other night.

I assisted my good friend Nathan Johnson in recording guitars for it, and it's finally out.  It's a very satisfying watch!  I’d seen a rough cut (with no music) from front to back, and then worked for a few months in the core team with my friend, composer Nathan Johnson, on the soundtrack.  He’s a great writer, and his themes for this film are fantastic.  Some of the best that I’ve heard in a while.  The working team included some of my favorite musicians from around the U.S. and the U.K.  You can read more about the process here:

Behind The Scenes; tidbits and delights

Included are “behind the scenes video diaries” about the composition process which shed some light on Nathan’s somewhat unconventional, and highly effective working style.  Also, go watch the film - it won’t let you down, promise; laugh-out-loud-funny (as they say)...

The soundtrack is also out on Itunes.  It's even a great listen as a stand-alone piece of work, outside the context of the film.  Get it here: Brothers Bloom
