The BSBS Blues Challenge started off with a bang on Sunday night with last year's Solo?Duo winner, Patrick Lewandowski opening the show. Andrew Ellis and Evan Bates were the first act to compete and started things off with wonderfilled, greasy slide guitar and vocals that got the crowd in the Longhorn Saloon hopped up. Mark Arshak and Kevin Gall followed with more great slide and bass guitar work and the feet in the joint were a tapping.

At this point, the crowd, and the judges knew they were in for a night of fine music. Right and left handed guitar slingers, Adam SoRelle and Mike Monica performed very cool, original, rocking blues songs to the delight of the crowd. The first solo act was Laurie Swyers, who created a duo with her loop machine as she entertained the house with her own Swyer infused songs and smiles. When Dave Kuntz and Franz Schlievert took the stage, they rocked the house with a cool singing, a walkin' bass and SRV/Albert King infused power guitar.

With a warm house, Pete "Big Dog" Fetters took the stage with a tale to tell. His great guitar and harp accompanyment kept the audience in time with his story. Father/son team, Tom and Alex Clawson had big shoes to fill by the time they stepped on stage and they filled them admirably with a great selection of singing and guitar playing which proved that these boys had been playing for many a year.

I will tell ya what, there was no fat lady singing, but nobody left the Longhorn 'till the last note was played and I am absolutely certain that there was not another competition like this anywhere in this try-state region! I almost felt sorry for the judges who had to decide the winner of this group because in my mind, they were all winners.

When the numbers were tallied, the 2009 winner of the Solo/Duo BSBS Challenge was
LAURIE SWYERS with Pete "Big Dog" Fetters the runner up.

The champaign was popped, the new BSBS Blues Challenge plaque was presented and gift prizes awarded to Laurie Swyers. She will go to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge.

CONGRATULATIONS LAURIE SWYERS!!!!

NEXT-THE BAND CHALLENGE- COME ONE AND ALL TO THE GREATEST SHOW IN NORTHWEST OHIO AND SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN AS SIX REGIONAL BANDS COMPETE FOR THE RIGHT TO REPRESENT BSBS IN THE IBC CHALLENGE IN MEMPHIS. THE SHOW WILL BE IN THE MAUMEE INDOOR THEATER AT 601 CONANT STREET, MAUMEE, OHIO ON SATURDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 17, 2009 WITH DOORS OPENING AT 6PM AND SHOW TIME AT 7PM. TICKETS AT THE DOOR ONLY $10.00 AND $8.00 FOR BSBS MEMBERS. WE WILL HAVE FOOD AND BEVERAGES AVAILABLE. FOR ALCOHOL, ID WILL BE REQUIRED.

Dear Affiliate,

Please pour yourself a beverage of choice and take a couple minutes to read this email, it contains important information!

The Blues Foundation has done away with the affiliate application process. You will receive instructions and codes for register your IBC acts. You will receive three different emails, one for band, one for solo/duo and one for youth acts. The codes will be category specific, so make sure you give the right code to the right act. Remember that is it the affiliates responsibility to make sure that the acts get registered. This does not mean that the affiliate has to register the act; it simply means that it is your job to make sure they get registered. Some acts may not be computer savvy, others may procrastinate. Please help them!

This year we will register acts on our own website, not Sonicbids. Once an act registers, their information will be posted on our website (we hope). Fans, competitors and affiliates will be able to read the bio and see a pic of the act. This will be more exposure for the act and give the affiliate a place to make sure that their acts are registered. They will be arranged by the sponsoring affiliate.

Make sure that your officers, representatives and fans know where to find IBC information. It really does slow the process and limits the effectiveness of The Blues Foundation when we answer the same questions that could be answered by simply looking at the website. Here is the link to the IBC page, http://www.blues.org/about/logos.php#ref=ibc_index.

Hotel reservation information will be made available on our website beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 9:00 am CDT.  Members will have first access to the two host hotels-the Doubletree and the Holiday Inn Select. Only individual members with their own membership numbers will have access to the codes that will get them the information they need for the discounted rate. Affiliates: take note.  If you want to reserve rooms at one of these hotels, at least one member of your team must be an individual member. The point: personal membership has privileges.

With respect to the raffle, you may print up to 500 tickets to use as a fundraiser for the society, increase membership or however you wish.  It is up to you to determine whether such an undertaking is legal in your state. The drawing will be at the finals of the 2010 International Blues Challenge on January 23.  We must have them in the office by January 15 to ensure they are included.

A new society or a society with new officers sometimes asks about the benefits of being affiliated with The Blues Foundation.

1.  The local blues society becomes affiliated with the international organization.  Just being part of something larger--being part of the team/part of the whole-is good for all concerned.

2.  Your society will be listed as an affiliate organization on our website http://www.blues.org/affiliates/index.php4 with a link to your society's website.  You will also be listed in the IBC and Blues Music Award programs.

3.  You will receive regular e-mail correspondence from the Foundation about Blues news, upcoming events, shared offers, CDs or DVDs to review, latest and complete information on the 2010 International Blues Challenge and Keeping the Blues Alive Awards coming up January 20-23, 2010 and the 30th Blues Music Awards on May 13, 2010.

4.  Assistance with issues confronting your society whether directly from the Foundation or via one of the numerous experts that volunteer to assist.

5. Eligibility to enter a band and a solo/duo act in the IBC.  Only affiliated organizations can enter acts in this increasingly important event.  These competitions are good fundraisers for many societies.  This is considered by many affiliates to be the most significant benefit.

6. Eligibility to submit nominations for the Keeping the Blues Alive Awards, the deadline for which will be September 30, 2010.

I want to say something about use of our logos.  You are free to do so with one exception.  Please do not use the Keeping the Blues Alive Award logo unless your society is a past KBA recipient.  And also make sure you are using the most current logos which can be found at http://www.blues.org/about/logos.php4.

Thanks for your continuing support, but the Foundation is only as strong as its members and the affiliates are the key to the success of the Foundation just as they are the key to welfare of Blues music around the world.

If you have questions or comments, please email joe@blues.org.
