Local DJs Celebrate 5-year Anniversary Co-op scrambles to plan celebration as Hunnicutt fumes
Local ham DJ Co-op had a great deal of explaining to do after he forgot about his five-year anniversary of throwing parties with DJ Hunnicutt.
The DJs, who were recently named Winnipeg's favourite for the fourth year in a row in Uptown Magazine were at a cocktail party with a group of other DJs when someone asked Co-op when his anniversary of throwing parties with Hunnicutt is. Co-op was reported to have replied, "What."
He now claims he was only joking and knew all along that Saturday, June 9th will be five years since the duo threw their first dance party, "Doin' the Do!"
Hunnicutt, however did not find the joke funny and stormed out of the room, only to be found later locked in the bathroom sobbing.
"It's like... he can just be soooo insensitive sometimes," sniffed Hunnicutt, "I've been dropping hints to him all year that this date was coming up!" Adding he was hoping Co-op would have planned something special on his own.
"I hate having to do all the work."
Co-op maintains he did have something planned all along and showed up at Hunnicutt's office the next day with a flyer for their 5th anniversary party, "Doin' the Do 2: Electric Boogaloo," Saturday, June 9th at the Pyramid Cabaret.
"I've had the poster done for weeks, I just wanted it to be surprise," maintained Co-op in a radio interview the following day. However, he was spotted at the 24-hour Staples Copy Centre the night before with a panicked look on his face.
Hunnicutt found the gesture sweet, but was upset again when he noticed that Co-op got the date wrong. With a resigned sigh he said he'd fix the posters adding, "I could have done a better job anyways."
This set Co-op off, "Well then why the fuck didn't you?!" He then mumbled something about perhaps Hunnicutt was running around with other DJs, adding, "I've seen the way Mama Cutsworth looks at you!"
Hunnicutt turned beet-red and told Co-op in no uncertain terms that was a low blow and said, "Well, Co-op, why don't you explain to the listeners why you're always running off to Saskatoon with DJ RPG!?!"
Co-op then left the studio in the middle of a mix, leaving Hunnicutt to finish the set. As he left, Hunnicutt yelled, "That's right, just walk away like you always do!"
Later that night, Co-op called the radio station to apologize, pleading with the host to put Hunnicutt on.
"He doesn't want to talk to you," said the host.
"He says he wants you to come over and pick up your slipmats and the rest of your gear."
Neither DJ was unavailable for comment, but the two were spotted at the Pyramid on Thursday night where Co-op was heard to say, "Look at DJ Chico and The Invisible Man, why can't we be a normal DJ couple like them!"

I dreamt I was making out with Lindor Reynolds.
Then I dreamt I owned a Number of nintendo games and resolved to buy a Nintendo to play them on.

DJ Hunnicutt takes top prize in national design competition Winnipeg DJ $20 richer after being named top graphic designer by DJ Co-op
Local ham DJ Hunnicutt was named "Graphic Designer of the Year" in the first-annual DJ Co-op Design Competition of Excellence and was rewarded with an oversized novelty cheque for $20.
"Of all the entrants, Hunnicutt's body of work stood out as being the most... y'know... excellent," said DJ Co-op at the award ceremony, held yesterday on Hunnicutt's lawn in Wolseley.
"He's also the only designer I know."
Hunnicutt seemed surprised not only by the honour, but also by being awoken by the sound of air horns and safety whistles at eight in the morning.
"I really don't know what to say," remarked the 31-year-old DJ while in his underpants attempting to sign the back of the oversized novelty cheque.
"I can only think that this is Co-op's way of paying me back the money he owes me," speculated Hunnicutt, who claims his DJ partner owes him $40.
"This must be a down payment."
For his part, Co-op denies having any ulterior motives in presenting the award beyond "giving the credit - where it is due." When asked about the alleged debt, Co-op muttered something about owing Hunnicutt money, but that the actual value was closer to 20 cents.
Co-op then proceeded to sound his air horns repeatedly and complain that no one got his Gang Starr reference.
In addition to being one half of Winnipeg's favourite party-rocking turntable tandem, Hunnicutt is also an accomplished graphic designer, who does nearly all of the duo's posters. His latest, for the party Beat Generation, Friday, April 27th at the Pyramid Cabaret is being touted by many pundits as his best yet.
Local hater and graphic design major Mark Saunders gave the poster the glowing review of "fair to middling" on his latest myspace blog entry. Mr. Saunders, along with the rest of the world, is in the process of migrating to facebook.
Jared McKetiak, station manager at 101.5 UMFM agrees the poster is one of Hunnicutt's best. He noted that the station has supported every Co-op/Hunnicutt dance party since the first one nearly five years ago and the poster design always seems to get better.
"It's amazing - I don't know how he does it."
Asked if he was referring to to Hunnicutt's ability to consistently make hot posters, Mr. McKetiak replied, "Um... no. I meant Co-op's ability to get away with borrowing so much money from Hunnicutt," adding, "Actually - dude owes me like $10 from at least a year ago. Hey Co-op - next time I see you better have something for me!"
Mr. McKetiak then quietly complained that no one got his Paul Wall and Chamillionaire reference.
An archive of Hunnicutt's design work can be found somewhere among the maze of dead links and error messages that is www.djcoop.com.

Winnipeg DJs Plan to Conquer World, Western Canada Hunnicutt and Co-op fail to realize Western Canada is part of the world
Two of Winnipeg's favourite DJs have announced plans to conquer the world and Western Canada - in that order.
"Today, the entire planet - tomorrow Saskatoon!" shouted DJ Hunnicutt at today's press conference.
The conference, held in front of the Salsbury House on Pembina Highway was to officially unveil the duo's Western Canadian tour, entitled "Cold Gettin' Stupid With Cupid." Co-op and Hunnicutt will be joined by Peanuts and Corn rapper John Smith, who will be hosting the 4-turntable dance party as it hits Saskatoon, Edmonton, Golden, Jasper, Fernie, Calgary, Vancouver and Whistler.
Details of the tour were overshadowed the nonsensical claim that conquering Western Canada was the group's next step after conquering the world, rather than the other way around.
Bob Woodward of the Washington Post was the first of the some 150 journalists in attendance to pick up on the error in Co-op and Hunnicutt's claim. Woodward pointed out that once the world was conquered, there would be no need to conquer Western Canada, as it is part of the world.
Hunnicutt wasn't paying attention during Mr. Woodward's question, but a bewildered looking Co-op replied, "Huh?"
Mr. Woodward quickly withdrew his question, but the thread was picked up by Judith Miller, formerly of The New York Times, now with the Brandon Sun.
Ms. Miller called the press conference "a cheap and childish publicity stunt of the worst kind" and went on to say, "you know damn well that Western Canada is part of the world," adding, "this shit ain't shit."
Co-op and Hunnciutt are Winnipeg's hardest-working DJs and have been voted the city's favourite in Uptown Magazine's annual reader's poll for the past three years. The duo are well-known not only for their funky and creative mixes and sure-shot dance parties, but also the unique and often outlandish way they promote their events.
Last year, they claimed Winnipeg's Olympic medal winning speed skaters Cindy Klassen and Clara Hughes would attend a rolller-skating party they were holding. After the olympians were nowhere to be seen at the event, Co-op denied they ever made the claim. They also promised to literally raise hell and relocate it to the Pyramid Cabaret for a Halloween party. In the summer, they released the results of a "survey" which showed their annual Funk Boat to be more anticipated by the general public than Christmas.
This is the first major tour for Co-op and Hunnciutt, who have been playing together for five years, but have nearly 25 years of combined experience as DJs.
Bartley Kives of the Winnipeg Free Press is a long-time critic of Co-op and Hunnicutt's promotional tactics and was at the press conference in the back row shaking his head.
"The sad thing is, this isn't a publicity stunt. They really don't understand why taking over the world would be sufficient," opined Mr. Kives, adding, "I can't fucking believe I'm even commenting on this."
Mr. Kives was at one time music editor of the Free Press, but has since moved to city hall, prompting many to wonder if his move was motivated by a desire to get away from the DJs constant pestering for publicity. There are also unconfirmed reports he made the decision after waking one morning with a severed horse's head in his bed.
