Toms Top 10 of 08
1. Run Kid Run- “Love At The Core”
Run Kid Run was a band that I had been keeping tabs on ever since their first release on tooth and nail records in the spring of 06. Their first record was good but this record is excellent. My biggest pet peeve is records I can’t listen to straight through and that is certainly not a problem with this one. This is a somewhat small unknown band that you should know. I look forward to future releases from these guys.
Fav. Track…. “My Sweet Escape” Track 7.
2. Army of Freshmen- “Above The Atmosphere”
AOF did not disappoint with their new record at all. Call me partial because I consider this band family and their drummer Mike has produced our last 2 records, but this record hits hard and deserves recognition. Great melodies, hooks everywhere and clever lyrics, its def. a top pick for me. If you don’t own it or know of this band, please know them now.
Fav. Track…. “Condition Christine” Track 4.
3. Hit The Lights- “Skip School Start Fights”
I nervously awaited this long awaited and anticipated release after they lost their vocalist in mid 2007. I didn’t know what the new sound would be if anything different or any other variables that may have changed but at first listen, it completely surpassed all expectations and found a permanent home on repeat both in my car and Ipod for quite sometime. With their former back up vocalist and guitar player Nick taking over lead Vox it gave a fresh new sound for the band with a very heartfelt and solid record behind them. This record is amazing and hits hard, own it and love it.
Fav. Track…. “Cry Your Eyes Out” Track 9.
4. Fall Out Boy- “Folie A Deux”
Another year and another FOB record and another year it ends up in my top 10. This record came out just in time for me to fall in love with it and to make it to a nice spot in my top 10. Like their last release in 07 “infinity on High” this record took some serious straight through listens with a nice set of headphones at different points in my day for me to fully understand and appreciate the record. Like all their others, it’s brilliant in my eyes. Patrick’s songwriting proves its advancement and shows its vast variety of style here and paired with incredible and clever lyrical genius, it’s a record you should certainly appreciate. This record continues to make me proud to have watched this band as I grew up throughout high school in Church basements and Knights Of Columbus halls.
Fav. Track……”(Coffee’s For Closers) Track 7.
5. Forever The Sickest Kids- “Underdog Alma Mater”
After picking up their E.P in mid 2007 as their first release I was immediately impressed and looked forward to this full length release which includes re recordings of many of the E.P tracks as well as many more. This is Power Pop at its finest and certainly my favorite band in that genre. It’s a fairly solid straight through listen with many standout tracks. Highly recommend taking a listen!
Fav. Track…. “Breakdown” Track 9.
6. Anberlin- “The Resistance”
I couldn’t wait for this record to come out. All in all I was disappointed with their last release in 07 “Cities” and was hoping for that redeeming record. At first listen I didn’t think I had got that record but with consistent listening and understanding and finding each songs meaning and purpose I grew to love the record and guaranteed it a spot in the top 10. Anberlin is a very talented and dedicated band and very caring. To me, you can tell that they truly feel and care about each song on their records with hard hitting lyrics from singer Stephen Christian. You can truly get lost in this album and lyrics if you give yourself the chance. Take that chance and check it out!
Fav. Track…. “Haight St.” Track 10.
7. The Academy is… “Fast Times at Barrington High”
I can finally happily put the Academy is in my top 10. After laughing off their last release “Santi” I was very impressed after nervously purchasing this record. This record made it seem like Santi was never released and that they took the great record “Almost here” which was released in 05’ and grew. There are some great tracks on this record and it makes me love and appreciate this band again which I was missing. Having played with this band a few times when I was in high school amidst their first release before signing with Decaydence/Fueled By Ramen, they will always be a band I will dig and appreciate having grown up in the same area and playing similar local venues. If you lost interest @ Santi, come back and enjoy again.
Fav. Track……”Automatic Eyes” Track 8.
8. The Maine- “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop”
After catching my attention in their standup cover of Akon’s “I wanna Love you” on the Punk Goes Crunk release, I looked forward to their full length release on Fearless records. This record is very catchy pop rock. Mad ups to these guys who are all of high school age or a year out and being so successful especially after only forming in early 07. The record reminds me of the grooves “The Starting Line” put down in years past which is a favorite band of mine. This record is straight through and solid and @ times a bit immature/crude but its hard to deny it’s a well done record. I look forward to the band growing and for future releases.
Fav. Track…. “This is the End” Track 7.
9. My Favorite highway- “How To Call a Bluff”
Turned onto this band by Chris whom I share many musical interests with I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. This band is great pop rock and solid at that. Its very heartfelt thoughtful music that virtually anyone should enjoy. Had I had time to really dive in and appreciate it more I'm sure it would have ranked higher in this list but it certainly made it in for what it is. I am glad I got turned onto the band and look forward to following them. If your like me and didn’t know of the band, go take a listen!
Fav. Track….. “Getaway Car” Track 2.
10. Plain White T’s- “Big Bad World”
The battle to gain the last spot on my list this year was highly heated! In the end I had to pick my boys in the Plain White T’s. I am fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with these guys and work for them on many occasions. Knowing the guys and hearing the songs on this record over and over again live might make me partial, but I’m into it. I like the record, its fun, its solid and it’s very well done. Plain White T’s is a local name that has to be on its 10th or 11th year @ this point and they certainly deserve the success that has received in the last 2 years. Buy the record.
Fav. Track…..”Big Bad World” Track 1.
Honorable mentions of 08’
Sing it Loud-“Come Around” Valencia- “We All Need Reason to Believe” Brightwood- “Wake” Driving East- “The Future of the Free World is Riding on This One” Every Avenue- “Shh.. Just Go With it” Kanye West- “808’s & Heartbreak” American Diary- “The Brightest Colors” You, Me and Everyone We Know- "So Yougn, So Insane" E.P.
Joey’s Top 10 of 08
1. hit the lights- skip school start fights 2. anberlin- new surrender 3. the ghost inside- fury and the fallen ones 4. forever the sickest kids- underdog alma mater 5. alkaline trio- agony and irony 6. cute is what we aim for- rotation 7. jason mraz- we sing, we dance, we steal things 8. the academy is- fast times at barrington high 9. go crash audio- dear, song in my head 10. confide- shout the truth
Chris’s Top 10 of 08 1. My Favorite Highway- How To Call A Bluff This is the album that I listened to from top to bottom most often this year. It became my go-to album that I would put on whenever I didn’t know what to listen to, and that fact remains true. My Favorite Highway’s refreshed blend of piano-pop-rock caught my ears immediately, and their bold lyrics said all the right things without growing cliché. I can stay that, as far as I can tell, this album is spotless on the production level, and the performances that the band turned in are strikingly true and emotional, yet still well written and clear. Truly a great front to back listen. Standout tracks: Getaway Car, Entertain The Pain
2. Matt Nathanson- Some Mad Hope Hands down the best solo album to come out this year. Kicking off with the single “Car Crash” made me scared that I was in for a rough ride (most of the time when singles are track 1, it means the rest of the album is crap, so they’re giving the listener what they want right at the beginning), but I was surprised to find a very well put together album, blending emotionally quiet tracks and great acoustic-pop. Standout Tracks: Come On Get Higher, Gone
3. Fall Out Boy- Folle a Deux This one knocked me on my ass. I like Fall Out Boy, everything they’ve done has always been good, so I expected to like this one, but this album completely blew me away. The lyrics are more true-to-life than ever, the songs are big and anthematic, and the instrumentation, from strings to horns to their use of electronics is refreshing. Patrick's songwriting and vocal skills have become something I look up to quite a bit, especially after this album, he shows his true range all across the board. Like I said, I expected to like this album, but I didn’t expect to love it right off the bat as I did. Standout Tracks: Disloyal Order Of The Water Buffaloes, What A Catch Donnie
4. Augustana- Can’t Love Can’t Hurt I don’t have a ton to say about the album from the guys who brought you the hit “Boston” a few years back. They put together an album full of well crafted, though not over-produced songs. I hoped they would pick up where “Boston” left off, and it seemed that they did. Everything that happens on this album just feels right. No experimenting with anything strange, just great well-crafted songs, including the piano ballad of the year, Fire, which proves that sometimes all you need is one instrument and one voice to have a song that touches the heart. Standout Tracks: Hey Now, Fire
5. Ryan Cabrera- The Moon Under Water I’ve always had mad-respect for Ryan Cabrera. He’s always done what he does very well, and what he did was straight up pop, this album was released without the aide of a label, to very little fanfare, and with Ryan looking a little (okay, a lot) more scruffy than ever. He also took musical risks that I never expected to hear from him. His lyrics got much more honest, and the structure of the songs got a little more involved, but he still maintained his pop sensibility without missing a beat. Standout Tracks: Say, Rise
6. Hit The Lights- Skip School, Start Fights This is the album that should be on at any good party. Great energy, great sing-along lyrics and melodies, great air-drumable and air-guitarable tracks. Seriously the only album that I’d get mad when someone turned it off if I was out having a good time. Standout Tracks: Breathe In, Back Breaker
7. Every Avenue- Shh.. Just Go With It This is another album along the same lines as Hit The Lights, great energy, great honest lyrics, great riffs. Really just a well put together record. I was slightly disappointed that this wasn’t entirely new material, but they did do the right thing and enhance their older songs and make them even better which still made them a quality addition to the album. Standout Tracks: Where Were You?, A Story To Tell Your Friends
8. Jason Mraz- We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things Jason Mraz is possibly my favorite artist of recent times. His undeniable talent, vocally, and on a guitar consistently shines through no matter what he’s doing, and while this album may not have had more than one hit song on it, “I’m Yours,” which I firmly believe will be the only hit from this album, but it displayed the talent of Jason Mraz and his backing band so well that he didn’t need to have any more hits to allow this album to further his career quite a bit. Standout Tracks: Live High, Butterfly
9. The Academy Is… Fast Times At Barrington High Another one of those albums that I didn’t expect to like as much as I did, especially after their previous album, “Santi,” didn’t exactly hit me. But, the cleanly produced album that TAI put out this year definitely felt more like “Almost Here” than “Santi,” which was a welcome return to form. This album is really carried by the vocals which are crisp and clean from top to bottom, truly fun to sing-along to, if you can hit the high notes, that is. Standout Tracks: About A Girl, The Test
10. Beat Union- Disconnected These British pop-punkers do it up with the best energy I’ve heard in quite a while, and their lyrics are strikingly honest and clever. Their ability to use throwback styles and tones from the ska, reggae, and 80’s pop eras and make them relevelant is incredibly refreshing. Another great top to bottom listen with absolutely incredible energy. Standout Tracks: Disconneted, Stay On The Line
Other Albums I truly enjoyed this year: You, Me, And Everyone We Know- So Young, So Insane Army Of Freshmen- Above The Atmosphere Go Crash Audio- Dear, Song In My Head American Diary- The Brightest Colors Run Kid Run- Love At The Core Plain White T’s- Big Bad World
Brendan's Top 10 of 08
1. Beat Union- "Disconnected" 2. Hit The Lights- "Skip School Start Fights" 3. Army Of Freshmen- "Above the Atmosphere" 4. TRV$ DJAM- "Fix Your Face" 5. Alkaline Trio- "Agony and Irony" 6. One Day As A Lion EP- (Self Titled) "One Day As A Lion" 7. Black Tide- "Light From Above" 8. Plane White T's- "Big Bad World" 9. Flight of the Conchords- "Ladies World" 10. Rise Against- "Appeal To Reason"
DJ Andy Farley’s Top 10 of 08
1 hit the lights - skip school, start fights [top track: breathe in] The standout winner by far for 2008. With the loss of their original lead singer, many people - me included - thought these boys were donzo. Every track on this release proves that such worry was unfounded. “Skip School…” has everything you want in the ‘party disc of the summer’; huge sing-a-long choruses, catchy riffs and a snappy tempo to get the party started. Each track has incredible staying power and I don’t find myself skipping any single one consistently. Admittedly, this disc isn't going to blow your mind with originality but it delivers strongly on everything fun pop punk should be. Your vocal chords will be gone in no time.
2 go crash audio - dear, song in my head [top track: from here to california] This 4-piece out of Nebraska has written some of the catchiest tracks I’ve found this year, and all without being stuck to the rigid confines of the impatient-youth-centric genre. The entire disk has a refreshing indie-pop vibe a la Get Up Kids/Jimmy Eat World with jaw dropping song writing that keeps you coming back and back and back again. While I note that “From Here to California” is my personal favorite (the ending with the double time chorus and group chants is sick), you’ll listen like I do, by starting at track one and going all the way through with a huge smile, mouthing every word.
3 misery signals - controller [top track: ebb and flow] Finally. I’ve seen these WI natives numerous times (they played at the first date of my fiancée and I FYI) and have been waiting for a disc that was both properly mastered and accurately documented their heaviness. Controller sees a shift into more melodic areas for the band, but don’t think for a second you’ll get more breathing room. Their sound is still devastatingly hard with some of best instrumentation (every instrument is really top notch) and vocals (both delivery and content) out there. It’s artistic hardcore. Yeah. Seriously.
4 jeniferever - nangijala [top track: openings to stories] It’s a three track ep (granted, each track is approximately 8 min long) and it’s one of my favorite releases of the year. Do I need to say more? Fine: I am madly, unabashedly but possibly unhealthily in love with this band. Jeniferever is an ambient indie post-rock collective (that’s a mouthful) from Uppsala, Sweden. In short, it’s the prettiest music ever written. It starts soft and delicate with fantastic indie/emo vocals that lay on top of spacey, melodic guitars and strings and then it builds into a crushing orchestral-like climax that will dilate your pupils. Get this now and space out watching the snow fall.
5 by the end of tonight + tera melos - complex full of phantoms [top track: party with tina] A split!? Yeah, both of these boys have become huge favorites with previous releases so to see them team up was like having Mario tagteam with Sonic. The BTEOT half (tracks 1-6) is much more rockish with frantic, complex song structures. Have your seatbelt on as they move from blazing guitar tapping to melodic post-rock soundscapes in a heartbeat. The music is incredibly original, passionate and furious even sans vocals. Tera Melos takes over the rest of the disk and is definitely the reason why this is so high on my list; this band is a musical tour de force, mixing the electronics from Aphex Twin, the frantic guitar stylings of Hella and the best jazz-punk drummer you have ever heard (EVER). “Party with Tina” is one of their more ‘accessible’ tracks and still its mindblowingly insane: faded indie vocals, massive guitar shedding and pedal fx work, frenzied jazz drums, and a brass section?! Ridiculously cool.
6 the ghost inside - fury and the fallen ones [top track: faith or forgiveness] This came out of nowhere. Jim, Joey and I were at a show at the Metro when these guys blew our collective minds and made me an instant fanboy. Think Terror vs. Comeback Kid. Think the most malicious, straightforward, hardcore punk. Think of an impressive stage presence, total madness in the pit. Think of balls-to-the-walls drumming, doom chord chugs switching in an instant to melodic guitar solos and group chants. Stop thinking. Start headbanging.
7 duck duck goose - noise, noise and more noise [top track: sgt. slaughter] Yes, this band was started as a joke. Their music is not. Okay, some of you will listen to this and decide after less than a second that this is the worst music of the decade and now your ears are forever bleeding. However, maybe a select few of you will see this the same way I did; complete %$@#ing mayhem. With hardcore being so easy to write (mix one part angry/ADD kids and one part lack of musical patience/talent), it takes some brains or in this case the complete lack of them to bring something fresh, raw and generally terrifying to the table. “Noise…” does that to me. Math-y breakdowns, drum kicks heavy like lead, brutal vocals and obnoxious guitar tones; you’ll either instantly love it or hate it (and me for ever making you even sample them).
8 russian circles - station [top track: harper lewis] Hometown metal post-rock heroes easily make my list with their latest effort. Originally a three piece, I was a little nervous for this release seeing that their founding bassist left before the writing or recording of “Station”. Luckily, Brian Cook – former bassist of legendary hardcore group Botch – filled in, and the result is expansive, shredder-metal post-rock that’s heavy as hell. “Station” moves breathlessly from sprawling, delicate guitar melodies to ear blasting hardcore chugs. It’s a journey worth taking.
9 the academy is... - fast times at barrington high [top track: after the last midtown show] Let me start this off by saying that I thought “Santi” was just awful. I loved “Almost Here”, but what the hell happened?! More often than not you’ll never hear from a young band in that situation again, but surprise, surprise what do we have here! Admittedly, I ignored “Fast Times at Barrington High” for some time after its release, but after being egged on by some of my friends, I gave it a fair shot. If you’re expecting “Almost Here” again, stop reading. “Fast Times…” however is evidence of a band moving past their ‘high school’ tendencies and evolving into a mature, interesting band. Over the top analysis for pop punk? Maybe. But I found the slightly spacey, 80’s like vibe of this release captivating. Sure, you have one or two standard big-banger-sing-a-long tracks, but overall you’ll find the other tracks just as interesting and worthwhile.
10 fall out boy – folie a deux [top track: disloyal order of water buffaloes] Yup. Deciding my 10 spot was harder than anything else, but after a lot of thought these guys should definitely be up here. This is not “Take This to Your Grave”. It’s nothing close. Fall Out Boy won’t ever put out another release like that, and it’s what makes them great. “Folie a Deux” shows them pushing outward into blues, soul and more while still retaining their core. It’s impressive, fresh and shows why the band is definitely sticking around. At times, it can seem that there is too much going on but I implore you it give it a shot. You’ll still know all the words but whether or not you’d like to admit it is another story.
-honorable- farewell - isn't this supposed to be fun!? where the &%#@ was I last year. so good.
you me and everyone we know - so young, so insane put out an entire cd already. jeez.
lydia – illuminate more copeland than copeland was this year.
sakamoto & willits - ocean fire 99.999% of you won’t understand this. beautiful sound design, minimal.
houston calls - the end of an error needed to come a lot sooner, very solid.
forever the sickest kids - underdog alma mater too over the top sometimes, other times I love it to pieces.
confide - shout the truth solid but not as memorable as I’d like. terrible live show makes me sad.
the bronx - the bronx III rock and roll baby. ‘knifeman’ is an incredible track.
moving mountains – pneuma exciting and original post-rock. how are they still unsigned?!
fennesz – black sea given more time this could have been top 10. granular synthesis ftw.
m83 – saturdays = youth epic synth hero becomes 80s space pop hero.
daniel steinberg – [var. releases] best minimal techno producer of the year. simply outstanding.
