Big hooks and big guitars are the hallmark of the Broken Day Machine sound. With the muscular rhythm section of drummer Kevin Kennedy and bassist Steve Nelson confidently chugging along behind him, vocalist William May barks and brays his rugged vocals in hefty, husky tones.

On A Place Beyond The Sun, their most recent effort, Broken Day Machine takes a heavy 90s Rock blueprint as their foundation and builds up from there to forge something heavy as lead but rife with solid hooks. Lead guitarist Scott Longton keeps it simple, holding back the flash in favor of a layered simplicity. The result is a thick wall of guitars that serves the songs well.

Four of the tunes on the disc are heavy rockers that would probably blow the doors off any club in live performance. And while "Home" the final track on the EP is a clichéd, throwaway ballad, “At The Wheel” defies all expectations, rising above its meager intro to evolve quickly into a much better-than-average power ballad on the strength of a surprisingly catchy chorus.

Local Michigan Made Music Makers, Broken Day Machine, may have only been together for little over a year now, however, that hasn't stopped the venerable foursome out of Riverview, MI from dropping their sophomore effort, an EP called "A Place Beyond The Sun", much to the delight of their fans, affectionately referred to as "machine heads". An eclectic release of modern alternative rock & roll, available by digital download via iTunes, Broken Day Machine has delivered a gem of a Disc that is full of mesmerizing hooks while featuring lyrics that will have you on the edge of your seat. Opening up the disc, the epic, feel-good love song, One Last Night will ,literaly, have you rolling down the windows while cranking the volume to 10! The Gin Blossom-ish Go, which just may be our fav, supplies the ultimate hook, laced with crisp riffs which just dares you not to be singing along by the second chorus! At The Wheel brings that intoxicating late night drive home to life, filling your thoughts of your own "one to many" excursions that are the epitome of a DD. Finishing out the disc is the alt-country tinged ballad, Home, featuring Kevin Sharpe on the keys. Reflecting on childhood memories it will have you thinking of your own upbringing, sending shivers down your spine with some of the most inspirational vocals we've heard. Dr2 just can't seem to get these trax off our player; infectious hooks are everywhere, leaving their mark in your head for hours on end, long after the last song has ended, prompting you to "just push play" one more time! The quality of this disc not only lies in the obliviously talented musicianship of William May (vocals, guitar), Scott Longton (guitars), Kevin Kennedy (percussion), and Steve Nelson (bass), but of the whole package being delivered through an extremely rich vocal, featuring songs that have been written with relevant meaning and the desire to make their own dreams come true. One of the best local disc's this year, this just may be the breakthrough Broken Day Machine has been waiting for as we would not be surprised to hear a number of these songs on the airwaves today! This one gets a big thumbs up from Dr2, a definite staple of any music lovers collection, get yours today at iTunes or Amazon (for samples just click on the track title above). Broken Day Machine will be throwing their own EP Release Party July 10th at Riverview's Rack & Roll Bar, be sure to stop in and get your groove on!
