a real nice "mother of the 1966 bombs" review : http://www.heathenharvest.com/article.php?story=20090930091739406

Quote:
A given fact – Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong one day. No arguing with this one. Now, what are we doing with this axiomatic knowledge? We build nuclear weapons first, then we transport them over the heads of the general population, then we plan to put it in space as well. A good adaptation to our axiom? I don't think so, but then again, I am sure the majority of the population thinks the same way I do, so what's left to think about is who is deciding these poor decisions? It was 1966 that one of the most severe radioactive disasters happened in Spain, when a b-52 with 4 Hydrogen bombs collided with another plane. The H bombs themselves did not explode, but some of their non-nuclear detonators did, resulting in a radioactive leak. Spain was too close to four hydrogen bombs exploding in its southern region, and why?

Being political in music is getting harder and harder thing to do, while keeping the music interesting, and that yellow-pink-green, skinny figure, from the band "Punish yourself", who happens to be Cheerleader 69, is doing it well. Four painful songs, each can be compared with the loose H bomb I suppose, reveal Cheerleader 69 in a gloomy and tortured form. "King in Orange" is a slow and captivating opening. Part dreamy, part lamenting, guitars are forming slow waves and intersecting with each other for a powerful result.

As "Armageddon woman" Kicks in, we can hear the voice of cheerleader, bringing to mind old 80's groups from the deepest and darkest bat caves. The tortured screams hitting over and over along with industrial blasts and funeral horns make this track a great, powerful litany, It is hard to even notice as the next track – "Battlefield" begins, but the music becomes more solemn and painful.

"So long, So Lon" begins with the ceremonial drumming and the shattering screams of Cheerleader 69,becoming more and more bombastic as minutes pass. Definitely the high point of this great album, this true sonic explosion ends when the last song takes us away, with our eardrums still vibrating from the fourth part. Truly painful, Truly beautiful.

"Mother of the 1966 bombs" was recorded live with Vincent VX (The cheerleader) on vocals, guitars, electronics and bells, Alberick from .Cut on noise guitar and Xavier Guionie on drums. It's a short album, pressed over a 3" CDr, but it's really worth it. A great effort put into great pain.

line-up is : Daniel (guitar, loop station) / vx (guitar, e-bow, loop station). This is a 21 minutes long track in the Eno & Fripp tradition : improvised guitar loops intermingling to create a rather minimal but dense atmosphere. Enjoy !
