Review:
"...his latest album, Lights On, is an artful soul/Americana mix that blends Smith’s deep vocals with heavily acoustic tunes that might be the most compelling combo since Don Henley’s “Sunset Grill.”"

Malcolm Rollick is a wearer of silly hats and a player of folk ballads that are nice and un-boring. And she's cute in a way that only folk singers can be cute."
-Drew Gemmer, Portland Mercury

"I have rarely heard that a voice can transport such an amount of intensity even via CD. I can just guess how this must be to experience it live." - Madchen Blog, Germany

Robert Burke Warren

"A Southern ramble who settled down in the unlikeliest of places - the East Village- this vinegar-and-honey-voiced balladeer ruminates on family ties, personal breakouts and the challenge of reconciling history and possibility, in songs that mix folkish heart with post-punk skepticism.
- NY Times

Kelli Rae Powell

Kelli Rae Powell is the tiny ukulele-wielding, redheaded stepchild of Billie Holiday and Johnny Cash. Whether she's growling out wry ruminations or purring her way through a drinkaby (a lullaby-meets-drinking song of her own device), she delivers the kind of consistently literate lyrics that once prompted Tommy Ramone to call her a poet.

A note from my friend Nayt: go vote.  they deserve it.

Hi.  The Webbys are upon us.
What?  The what?  Who cares?

They are the Oscar's of the Internet.  Websites, Film, Interactive Advertising, Mobile stuff, etc.

The nominees for plenty of categories are in, but the one of utmost interest is the ANIMATION category where Perfectland has been nominated!  I worked on Perfectland, along with about five other people, including my friend Ben (the creator/director) who worked every day for about seven months straight.  MTV paid for them.  They are really great films, and it'd be great to have lots of people vote for it to snag the "People's Choice Award".  It's actually pretty cool to be nominated.  A panel of judges at a prestigious NYC gala in May will choose the overall winners, but if you want to help us convince MTV to fund more animation and save us poor animators from squalor, here's how to vote for us:

1) You'll need to register..its not too bad.... at http://pv.webbyawards.com/

2) THEN from the main page...click 'online video and film'...

3)THEN click 'animation' and you'll see 'Perfectland' there and you can vote for me and not even install the proprietary microsoft plug in they make you install just to watch anything.  But if you haven't seen it..... you gotta!

thank you so much!

Dear Friends,

I have wondered for a long time how best to make traveling in the
name of art a healthy act for everyone involved, and today I've had a
little revelation.

Booking agents work really hard, and don't get a lot of reward.
They devote their time behind computers and don't get to go to many
shows.  It is hard, tiresome work.  It's no wonder that we, as artists,
have  such a hard time finding people willing and able to dedicate
themselves to the task.  There are large companies that do this work
very efficiently.... but for up and coming independant artists, there
isn't much to do besides shoulder the work on our own, or teach a
friend.

One person alone, without a proper salary, shouldn't have to do this kind of work.  Not me, and not one of you.

So this is my idea / experiment.  I woul love for the ned of my bike
tour to be booked by my community.  Each person dedicating their time
to booking between one and three shows.  This few shows is a light,
comfortable amount of work!  It can even be a fun new project.
Booking, like anything else, is best taken in small doses.

I will provide the dates and places, basic information on how
booking happens, and any support that I am able to.  I will also work
to connect you to each other, if and only if you wish to communicate
with the larger group.

So.  If any of you would like to learn about booking, and feel that
you could commit your time to one - three shows, please contact me at malcolmrollick@gmail.com and tell me the # of shows you can commit to booking, and whether you would like to connect to the larger group, asap.

I would like you to be sure. I depend on these show getting booked
for my well being, and my livlihood.  If there is any doubt inside of
you, any pestering concern that you will be unable to do this work,
then please look for another way to support the arts.  Above all I need
some stability.  I am reaching out for help, and I trust that the help
I will recieve is genuine.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to read this, and I must
say... I am excited!  I have never had a *good* idea about booking
before, and this feels like a healthy new approach.

All in Light,
Malcolm

Yes, It's true... I'm headed across the country on my bicycle.  So please feel free to follow along my great adventure here:
http://slowkidonabike.blogspot.com
I am always looking for safe, warm places to stay along the road... so if you know someone along the route, or if you would like to host me... for a show and/or a night out of my tent, please feel free to get in touch, or post here with your location.
I think that was a run-on sentence.

I've been working or producing this festival for the past 6 months or so, and the date is quickly approaching. The night is going to be so diverse and powerful; I can't wait to see all of these incredible artists in one place.

Hope to see you there! xo Malcolm

Thursday, January 29th @ Holocene

The power of weaving, both metaphorical and physical, has been attributed to women throughout mythology. What is it to weave in a technological age? Do the old myths and archetypes mean anything to us? In honor of Arabella, the first spider to weave a web in space, we conjure this multimedia, hypermodern, integrated evening of performance art.

Hey Friends,

My friend Natalia posted this video and it really inspired me... Why not give gifts of charity donations this year??? If you are searching around for the right gift, and feel that you are needlessly spending money.... what could be better, what could be sweeter, and more necessary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVqqj1v-ZBU

And if you're turned off by this video having vaguely religious implications.... then (if you celebrate) ask yourself why you celebrate at this time of year at all. I'm not a Christian, but I believe in people. This whole mess got started ... well... if you look back far enough, it got started because of the alignment of the stars. So many traditions placed a holiday here... and well, I don't believe in that kind of co-incidence. It's a good time to huddle together... carry the light for the rest of the year.

We don't need *things*. We need *eachother*.

They say that the tides are turning in the world... spiritually, politically. Be the change, people.

xoxo Happy Holidays
