Posted by Paul Miles on December 26th, 2009 Your challenge is to correctly pick the fights on the UFC 108: Evans vs Silva fight card. You get one point for correctly picking the winner. Bonus points can be earned by picking round and method of victory. You get a half point for picking the round the fight ends in, and another half point for picking method. Each fight is worth a total of 2 points. But, if you get any part of the prediction wrong, you lose all points for the fight. You can only enter once. So bring some strategy.

"I have been running around like crazy trying to get everything lined up so I can make the move to Las Vegas. The tryouts were great! I'm not sure what the final count was for fighters trying out but there were a lot of guys there. We went through a series of cuts where they tested us for basic and advanced technical drills and we had to demonstrate various techniques to show our level of technical ability both on the ground and standing." "They cut people from the team as the tryouts went on until the final test which was a live "sparring" match. I say "sparring" because we wore boxing gloves and shin guards but they told us to go hard so they could see where we were in a live fight. That match was the last thing we had to do and they picked approximately ten of us for the team at the end of the day. The coaching staff and the people involved with Wanderlei Silva and the gym were awesome people and Wanderlei himself was a very nice guy and I am looking forward to learning all that I can from him and his staff. Now all I have to do is get out there, which poses a whole new problem since money is so tight for everyone right now but it will definitely be worth it once I am able to get out there."
John is 26, 5'8", 155lbs, and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, black belt in Tang Soo Do, black belt in American Self Defense System and also 11 years muay Thai experience. he went 6-0 as an amateur, and is now 2-0 as a pro. Here's a bit of what John wrote to Larry: "I have won first place in the Alaska State Submission Grappling Tournament in the 155lbs division... also first place in the Absolute division of the same tournament... I have won other medals and trophies etc. in other smaller tournaments but that one was a big deal. I hold the 155lbs Championship Belt for a venue out of Alaska and I am in the process of trying to get on a card right now that is going to be held in Iraq. It will be a free show for the troops and the first time in history that a show like this will be held in a war zone. Of course it will be televised, so I am excited to find out about that card soon."

The question has often been asked "Who is the man behind Tattoo Fightwear?". MAMMA-ONLINE had a chance to interview owner and CEO of Tattoo Fightwear to find out where and why the concept of Tattoo Fightwear came about. So hear it is: Posted by Paul Miles on December 4th, 2009 I got a chance to talk to Larry Novak (wearing the black shirt in the pictures above), owner of Tattoo Fightwear the week of Warrior Challenge 3. He’s one of those guys that’s so nice you almost think he’s jerking you around. But he’s not. He’s just genuinely one of the nicest guys in the fight scene. A week or two ago, Tattoo added shorts, mouth guards and hand wraps to the apparel line that already included shirts, hoodies and hats. We did this interview by email this week. Larry’s about eight foot four and a quarter feet tall. If you see him, show him some love.Q: First, as a guy who runs an apparel company, Larry, your sort of by definition a behind the scenes guy. People may have a Tattoo t-shirt but not know who you are. So let’s start at the beginning, who is Larry Novak? LN: I’m first and foremost a married father of four. I have 2 biological children and 2 step children. My full time job besides Tattoo Fightwear is being a teacher in the Harrisburg School District. I love to support my family in everything that they do, watching them succeed in opportunities that they have chosen gives me great joy. I grew up between Cleveland, OH. and Chino CA., I’ve had an opportunity to see two different worlds and life styles through out my childhood and teen years. I attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where I received my Bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education and have an associates degree in Sports Fitness Management. Q: We’ve talked a little about this, but Tattoo has a mission statement that goes above and beyond “Sell t-shirts of angels wings and revolvers to bulk dudes”. What is that mission statement, and what in your history made this mission important to you? LN: The mission statement is as follows: Tattoo Fightwear — Strong by Choice We’re all Tattooed — our lives marked permanently by struggle, strife or achievement. How we incorporate these marks into ourselves is up to us — whether they tear us apart or make us stronger than before. Tattoo is the lasting emblem of pride that represents victory over adversity. Tattoo is symbolic of honoring our achievements, reminding us where we came from, finding the strength to meet any challenge head-on. Though we’re marked by fate, we’re strong by choice. This heart, spirit and mindset that we wear on our sleeves is the core of Tattoo Fightwear. Our gear is battle-tested by warriors who bear the permanent marks of battle, who have used their adversity to become stronger than before.
Throughout my childhood and into my adult hood I went through many trials and tribulations. I took the initiative to work through my issues and develop a positive outlook on the things that I went through. I realized that everyone has things that have impacted their life and wanted a way for people to be able to express that through clothing. The angels and gun thing is great and I’ve seen alot of cool designs but I wanted to move more towards a positive message instead of destruction. Q: The first I became aware of Tattoo was when you started your sponsorship program with Warrior Challenge out in Lancaster. You guys are a major supporter of the WC and have your logo in the center of the cage. Talk about your experience with the WC, what it means to you to support that organization? LN: I’m really fortunate to be connected to the Warrior Challenge. The promoter, Mark Jovich has taken me under his wing and guided me through Tattoo’s beginnings. Mark has been in the martial arts seen for a long time and is a wealth of knowledge. To be connected to this organization has really worked well. Mark used to run a fight camp titled Central PA. Mixed Martial Arts which has now been given to two of his students. Because of my connections with the Warrior Challenge I was able to sponsor some of the best fighters in the mid state area. I like the way Mark has developed the Warrior Challenge, start small and let it grow and grow with it. This prevents the one hit wonder syndrome. I owe alot to Mark Jovich and the Central PA. Warrior Challenge for their commitment to Tattoo Fightwear. Who else is in the Tattoo Crew. Who works with you, and what fighters are you guys sponsoring right now? LN: The Tattoo crew is devised of a bunch of close family/friends who have given me their time with no strings attached. My wife who is Mrs. Tattoo who was the one who told me to go for it with the Tattoo idea. Frank who we call Fwank is my technical support, Ryan who we call Knobles Grove is always at the shows manning the Tattoo booth. My clothing is made at Axis Custom Apparel, they have made my life so easy. My photographer is Dave Fish who does the photos for the web site. As far as sponsored fighters, they are: Chad Strawbridge, Justin Scott, Duane Bastress, Chad Hoare, John Andell all of them train at Central PA Mixed Martial Arts out of M.A.C.E.. Other sponsored fighters are Jeff Runk, Lewis Rumsey, John George, Matt Bentley, Dustin Pague and James Chappell. These guy’s are a great group who carry themselves with great respect. (This video, I think, is an excellent introduction to the Tattoo family. -ed)
Q: You just came out with a bunch of new gear. What’s been the response to the shorts, mouth guards and hand wraps? LN: The response has been great. People love the two varieties of shorts and the different logo placements on both. The shorts are made with top notch material. The wraps are well liked because they are 180″ long and the logo patch on them is a nice touch. The mouth guards are double sided with a breath strip in the middle and the fighters seem to really like them. Q: While we’re talking about new gear, what’s the design process like for you? LN: I come up with ideas in my head. I let them toil around for a while and do a rough draft of what I’m thinking. I have an artist who takes my drafts and ideas and will refine them for me. All of my ideas deal with triumph over tribulation. This is prevalent in the slogan “Marked By Fate Strong By Choice”. Q: Are there new designs in the pipeline? LN: My brain is always going, sometimes I want to do things to fast and I have pull back the rains. Besides designing I am also looking at new apparel. Q: MMA’s been legal in PA now for almost a year. How has the fight scene changed since February, and what are you looking forward to this winter? LN: The fighters just keep getting better. Their is so much talent in PA. I see alot of new promotions popping up and that’s good for the sport as long as they’re run in a respectful way. I’ve also noticed alot of gyms and dojos offering MMA. The next schedule event is December 5 at York College, they are having a wrestling invitational with many nationally ranked wrestlers. February 19 will be the 4th installment of the Central PA. Warrior Challenge in Lancaster PA. I have also been contacted by Brawley Fights in VA. and I plan on being there. Q: What’s coming up for Tattoo and your fighters? Where can we see you guys this winter? LN: Alot of my sponsored fighters will be competing at the Central PA. Warrior Challenge Feb.19. Any more news on the fighters I’ll send to you in an email. LN: I need to thank all my family and friends, with out your support this would not be like it is. Mark Jovich, what can I say “You are the man” thanks for believing. All of the social sites with a special thanks to Ted Czech at MMA Explosion and Mike Malast at MMA Melee and it wouldn’t be fair to leave you out, you have been a great support and I love some of your emails. Check out Tattoo Fightwear at tattoofightwear.com, “Marked By Fate Strong By Choice”. Thanks for your support, Thanks to Big Larry first and foremost for helping me find the Lancaster Convention Center, site of Warrior Challenge 3. Without Larry’s help, I may still be wandering up and down Prince Street, in the rain, sad and alone. And seriously. There are few people out there with a heart as big as this guy. Without sounding like a Sally Struthers commercial. The guy deserves your support. Show him some love. Next up for is the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge. The date for the event is Feb.19 and a huge crowd is expected to top the attendance of the last Warrior Challenge. The event is being held at the Lancaster Convention Center and will start at 7:30. Tickets are going fast for the event as the card is stacked with some of the mid-state's best fighters. To purchase tickets and see the full information on the event go to www.warriorchallenge.info.
