The Melt Gallery at Meltdown is proud to present PHYSICAL NOSTALGIA, A group art showing that will serve as an examination of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s graphic novel WATCHMEN and how the themes and images contained therein have permeated pop art culture.
An artist’s reception party will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and is sponsored by Asahi beer.
Curator Marz Richards says, “PHYSICAL NOSTALGIA will exhibit a wild variety of art styles and media to present facets of this seminal work that will be lost as WATCHMEN transitions from the page to the silver screen. Now is the last moment for the knot-tops and grizzled vigilantes of art to stand up and show us what WATCHMEN means to them as the last five minutes of the doomsday clock tick away.”
Exhibiting artists include Eldon Asp, Steven Daily, Howard Hallis, Mack Hill, Jim Mahfood aka FOOD ONE, Kiyoshi Nakazawa, Jeret Ochi, Osgood Perkins, Raymond Persi, Renfield, Fill Marc Sagadraca, Christopher Stangl, Elan Trinidad with items from the private collections of John Cogan and David Mandel.
The show will continue in exhibition from March 7 until Saturday, March 22 at the Melt Gallery.

For Immediate Release: Show Title: Prodigal Reality Where: Melt Gallery inside Meltdown Comics October 4th –October 30th, 2008 Opening reception: October 4th, 2008, 7PM -11PM 7522 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90046 1.323.851.7223 www.meltcomics.com About the Show: Prodigal Reality is a show of art works by alumni of The Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and is one of a series of citywide events marking the 90th anniversary of the school. Prodigal Reality is curated by renowned Low Brow artist Anthony Ausgang, and artist Hazel Mandujano who chose Otis alumni that use the graphic language of comic books and cartoons in their work. Meltdown Comics, a world famous comic book store, is hosting the Prodigal Reality exhibition and will have the artists' comic books and other merchandise for sale in the main store. About the artists: Andrew Brandou's (graduated in '90) paintings remind us that cute animals can hide evil intention while Bob Dob's ('01) characters show us our "shadow side" and lets us in on our own dirty secrets. Gideon Boomer ('06) allows humans to play in a world that belongs to the animals as Mia Araujo ('07) concentrates on the complexities of worlds built around women. Mark Dean Veca ('85) takes Dr. Seuss as his starting point for a freeform abstraction of planet Earth and Hazel Mandujano ('03) writes and draws and self publishes her own comics and has founded the company Cakemountain. Anthony Ausgang's ('83) paintings of psychedelic cats are on a vacation from reality so that David Magdaleno's ('03) characters can ponder existential questions as they populate a sparse planet. About Otis College of Art and Design: Otis prepares diverse students of art and design to enrich our world through their creativity, their skill, and their vision. Otis began in 1918, when Los Angeles Times founder Harrison Gray Otis bequeathed his MacArthur Park property for Los Angeles' first public art college. Today, Otis has expanded to include four campuses. Its five-acre Elaine and Bram Goldsmith campus is centrally situated on Los Angeles' Westside, one mile from the Pacific Ocean. The campus is not only close to galleries, museums, and artists' studios, but also surrounded by a variety of film, digital imaging, and toy companies. The Bronya and Andy Galef Center for Fine Arts, a dynamic presence on the campus, houses the fine arts department as well as the Maltz and Bolsky Galleries and Graduate Writing. Kathleen Ahmanson Hall was designed by architect Eliot Noyes in 1963 to house an IBM research center. It now serves the interactive product design, toy design, digital media, communication arts, architecture/landscape/interiors, foundation, and liberal arts and sciences departments. Its "punch card" design embodies the perfect bond between design and technology and the future. The Fashion Design Department occupies an entire floor of the California Market Center in the heart of downtown L.A.'s garment district. Graduate Studios in the adjacent beach community of El Segundo house the Graduate Fine Arts and Graduate Graphic Design Programs. Graduate Public Practice studios are at Santa Monica's 18th St Arts Center. About Meltdown Comics and Melt Gallery: Meltdown Comics, was little more than the hope of two fans who took a risk and used their personal collection of comic books and Spider-Man memorabilia to open their own store. Now one of the most respected comic book stores in the world, it has become a must-see pop culture destination for some and a valuable research spot for others Melt Gallery, located within Meltdown Comics, is a key component in the cultural sphere of Los Angeles. Melt Gallery exhibits local and international established and emerging artists working in the mediums of graphic novel/comic art, designer toys, graffiti/aerosol painting, photography, illustration, and digital artwork.

Tournament of Nerds at Meltdown and UCB Theatre Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times (L-R) Justin Donaldson, Linda Pine and Hal Rudnick, co-producers of Tournament of Nerds, show off a few of their favorite superheroes in front of Meltdown Comics & Collectibles. The tournament features comic book fans debating the merits of various superheroes in a bracket-style competition. Think cuddly, Pikachu could crush Darth Vader? Think the Predator would be no match for Superman? The Tournament of Nerds aims to settle the debate. Elina Shatkin, Times Staff Writer July 3, 2008 Wolverine's adamantium claws or the Terminator's metal endoskeleton? A telepathic Amazon with a magic lasso or a 1970s Ugandan dictator? Freddy Krueger or Gandalf the Grey? Combine the greatest hypothetical battles into a March Madness-style bracket, invite movie and comic book nerds to make their case and you'll have the Tournament of Nerds, a debating competition that attempts to answer once and for all the most baffling existential dilemma facing humanity: Who is the greatest superhero of them all? "Personally, I hope the Alien Queen eviscerates Pikachu. I want to see him get a mouthful of acid blood," says Hal Rudnick, one of the tourney's co-organizers. Rudnick once worked as an entertainer at children's birthday parties, which included occasional stints playing Pikachu, an experience that was like "wearing a suit made of carpet while sticking your head in a giant fishbowl on the hottest day of the year in the Valley." Rudnick's hatred for the cuddly Pokemon avatar is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the profound passions evoked by this debate. "I've never been one to have these kind of arguments, but twice in the last week I've gotten into vicious debates about the best season of ' The Simpsons,' " tournament co-organizer Justin Donaldson says. "Season 8. Definitely. Not Season 4." Teaming up with actress Linda Pine, who produces a monthly stand-up comedy show at Meltdown Comics, Rudnick and Donaldson created 16 improbable battles and recruited passionate fans to argue the merits of each character at the live events. Think of it as the ultimate crossover. Voltron will fight Thor, the Thing will fight the "Cloverfield" monster, the Borg will try to assimilate "Battlestar Galactica's" Starbuck. Click here for a downloadable PDF of the Tournament of Nerds bracket. A trio of celebrity judges culled from the overlapping worlds of comedy and comic books will judge the merits of the arguments, and the eight survivors will head to the finals a week later. "All hell is going to break loose," Rudnick predicts. "I want to see nerds screaming, nerds crying and nerds laughing maniacally after victories."
