Daygo City Live
The Rhythm Lounge gig was billed as "the official album release concert" for San Diego hip-hop compilation Young Mass Presents...the Best of Daygo City.Opener Forte rocked the spot with a Zapp-style talk-box rendition of One Way's classic funk cut "Cutie Pie." Forte joins Roger, DJ Quik, and Teddy Riley as masters of the talk box, which is a keyboard with a tube that runs to the performers mouth to alter sounds. Seeing's believing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF8knWdUBUY
Most of the performers ran their laptop loops through the clubs soundman as they rocked the mics.

Gas One from www. dagosd .com's All Gas, No Breaks radio show was busting me up hosting between acts, and he gave away a lot of stuff. The beer was only $3 before 10 p.m. I took several of them to the head when Outta Control jumped on stage Beastie Boys-style, quaffing beer while performing their compilation song "Come Correct." The party was on!

I discovered why they call Bloodstone "Street Preacher" when I saw he had a whole bunch of cats gathered around in the parking lot talking on the ups and downs of the SD music scene, life, kids, and the Myna calendar’s prediction of the end of the world. He then got on stage and blew the roof off the spot.

All hands were in the air as the OG spit his track "Gangstas Don't Dance." At that point I went to the bathroom ($3 beers, remember?) but found someone had blown chunks all over the pot, floor, and sink...so I went next door. Unfortunately, during that time I missed out on HeatRok, but when I got back to the show Tha Cor had the stage and was doing their thing. Lead man Crhymes rang out "Do you want to smoke and get high?" I recognized the song from the Daygo City album and it sounded dope live.

The place was packed. The pool tables were full all night, the bar was busy, and the front stage area had a big group of people partying for every act. I don't know if it was a case of the planets aligning on some weird stuff, but the SD hip-hop scene felt like the bizness that night!

Artists: Forte, Bloodstone the Street Preacher, Outta Control, HeatRok, and Tha Cor

Venue: the Rhythm Lounge, 3048 Midway Drive, Sports Arena

Show date: November 6, 2009

Seats: at the bar, on the dance floor, searching for a bathroom

"Young Mass Presents... The Best Of Daygo City" was released independently early this year, and was nominated for a 2009 San Diego Music Award in the "Best Hip Hop Album" category. The album lost out to SD's excellent Hip Hop band Deep Rooted, but after receiving the nomination, and other attention, Jake Records picked up the project and will release it everywhere on 11/10/09! Press Release...

Description:

"Young Mass Presents... The Best Of Daygo City" is an album of all new, original solo cuts by San Diego artists bringing' some of the hottest Hip-Hop from across county.

In early 2008, after a five year stint as the youngest member of multi-platinum group Digital Underground, the 22 year old San Diego rapper/producer burst onto the local Hip-Hop scene with his explosive self-titled debut, which contained high profile cameo appearances from the likes of Shock G, Money B, and Yukmouth among others.

Young Mass is back with a project that Mass says... "represents a cross section of all the Hip-Hop in San Diego", "The best thing about the album is that it truly illustrates the variety of musical talent that we have in Daygo"! “All the way from Oceanside to San Ysidro, Young Mass Presents…The Best Of Daygo City, is exactly what its' title implies --Don't Sleep”!!!

The compilation is 20 tracks deep with heaters like Verbz (Styles Free) ode to the city "San Diego Is The Combination" which features Blame One, and Mr. Brady (Deep Rooted), Pacific Beach's O.C.T./Outta Control gets the party started with "Come Correct", and Southeast SD's finest Ms. Kitty takes you in the hottest club on "Work My Kitty", with an all star appearance from I-Rocc. Young Mass teams up with R&B singer J. Young with there smoothed out "you don't have to be a star to be in my show" inspired "Celebrity Girl" track. We also introduce some very sexy, lyrical fire with newcomer Shavone C. with her banger "Baddest Chick Around"!

Available:

November 10th online at iTunes, Amazon.com, Napster, Rhapsody, and more

DAYGO BEST HIP-HOP COMPILATION

Hoping to combat the notion that hip-hop competition breeds violence, several local performers are banding together for a Best of Daygo City compilation album. “We’re shooting for 99 percent exclusives, stuff that’s never been out before,” says Chris at On Fyre Entertainment. “This will not be a mixtape. A fully-pressed and professionally packaged CD will be distributed through retailers, iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby.”

So what’s the performer incentive to donate fresh tracks? “We’re not charging these artists $50 to $2,000, like mixtape DJs do. We also provide free promotional material, and the ability to purchase CDs in bulk, so they can resell on their own.”

Chris estimates pressing and promotion costs at around $2,000, which he’ll cover with partners Kayo and Young Mass. “The money will be raised through tax refunds, sales of Mass and Kayo albums in the streets, pimpin’, recycling, blood, sweat, and tears…just playing about that pimpin’ thing.”

 (Kayo)

So who gets Daygo’s Best proceeds? “The money will be invested into promoting musicians from ....San Diego...., and to the production of the next compilation album.”

Confirmed contributors include Vokab Kompany, O.C.T./Outta-Control, James T. Powers (Clay Pigeons), Play B, Kitty, Shock G, Kayo, Young Mass, Parker and the Numberman (Pac 10), female rapper Vision, and Bucky Adams (who at this writing claims “40,904 CDs sold in the streets of SD”).

 (Young Mass)

“I represent all of ....San Diego...., but I’m from Southeast,” says Kitty. “Everyone is out for self, because the biz is so tough to crack. So people feel that, if they help someone out, they’ll be outshined.”

Pacific Beach-based Vokab Kompany say they don’t mind donating a track. “We don’t really see it as a problem, nobody owes us anything,” according to an email from Burkey Baybe and Rob Hurt. “Complaining just attracts a temporary ear. ..Opportunity.. is there to be created…maybe when this is all said and done, we can be looked at as the ones to thank.”

“There aren’t too many people in ....San Diego.... I wouldn’t work with,” says Powers (who last month held most-downloaded slot on the Reader website).  “Though there are some people I’ve reached out to on numerous occasions who won’t give me the time of day. DJ Fingaz, get at me, haha!”

Young Mass (Then known as Fifth Element) plays football with Digital Underground's Shock G, Money B, Cleetis "Clee" Mack, Metaphysical (Element), and others at Da Noses first annual  "Gutfest BBQ" May 3, 2003 in San Diego's Mission Bay Park.

This was the historic first meeting of Mass & Digital Underground. Shock G was so impressed by Mass' song "Down In Dago", he put the 16 year old MC on at Cane's later that night. Peep what Shock said about it in a recient SD Reader interview when asked about his best gig with Mass...

Shock G-
Best was at Canes at Mission Beach by the roller coaster. Even though
we begged the staff to let our young group member & family member in,
they insisted he wait outside until his turn on stage and that he
could enter only to say his raps and then must leave immediately.
(??) We thought this was silly because he would cross the line anywayz
to do his part in the show, why can't he chill backstage? Mass swore
to stay in the dressin'room and to not even be near any alcohol (he
didn't even drink back then), but still, they insisted.. "No I.D?,
Can't chill inside!".
So when he reached the stage that night, first thing he did was let
the door men HAVE IT, over the microphone. I don't remember exactly
what he said, but Money-B & I where crackin up!! It was funny as hell,
Mass was really salty. Pissed. It was cold out that night.
ha ha ha
