Windy City All-Stars vs Charm City Roller Girls

Fresh off a decisive mid-August spanking of the third-ranked Philadelphia Liberty Belles, Baltimore’s Charm City Roller Girls bounced into Chicago’s UIC Pavillion Saturday night looking to hand the Windy City All-Stars an unprecedented second home loss. The tenacious and opportunistic Charm City whittled down a huge Windy City lead late in the second half while Chicago players circled the track waiting to take seats in a crowded penalty box. But a 20-point jam by rookie All-Star Ruth Enasia and door-closing defense late in the bout by veteran beat-down artist Hoosier Mama sealed the win for Windy City, 117-98.

During introductions, Charm City upstaged the home team by bunching into a tight pack and bouncing in unison to Windy City’s theme song, “Move Bitch.” But apparently in a hurry to expectorate the bitter taste of a one-point home loss to Philly in July, Windy City used the first 10 minutes of the half to roll up a 28-0 lead, sparked by a pair of grand slams by Athena DeCrime in the third jam. Charm City did not get on the board until the eleventh minute of the game, and managed just nine points for the first 18 minutes. Adept, physical defense by Ying O'Fire, Blossom Bruiso, and Malice With Chains allowed Windy City jammers to rack up points on every one of the first 12 jams despite playing one or two players short.

With 15 minutes left in the half and down 40-9, a Charm City jammer’s skate locked up; she lay on the center side of the track boundary tugging at a wheel, handing Windy City’s Shocka Conduit a virtual free pass. With the Charm City bench screaming, she finally crawled onto the track, obligating officials to whistle the jam dead. WCR challenged the call, which was eventually upheld. The long official’s time out seemed to advantage Charm City, however, which finally capitalized on WCR mistakes.
In the twelfth jam, with a WCR skater already in the box, Ying O'Fire and Blossom Bruiso were both sent off with majors in the first 30 seconds of the jam. Showing why she is one of the nation’s best at the front of the pack, Charm City’s Dolly Rocket punished what was left of the WCR blockers while Just Carol stirred the pot for 16 points.

Hoosier Mama and Yvette YourMaker (who was supported by a large fan club with matching t-shirts camped behind the WCR bench) neutralized notable Baltimore rookie Bambi’s Revenge, and the two teams played scoreless for several minutes until the half’s last jam. With only a minute left, Just Carol looked positioned to exploit a power jam, but Hoosier, Malice, and Go-Go Hatchet slammed the door with a dramatic penalty kill.

Up 58-33 at the start of the second half, the Windy City All-Stars were as dominating as the half-time’s “Stanky Leg” contest was a bust. (One was as likely to find a fan doing arabesques, Norwegian folk dance, or the Hustle as the Stanky Leg.) In jam 2, Hoosier Mama whipped Varla Vendetta to a grand slam, and the game’s most valuable player would go on to score 13 total before the whistle blew. An eight point power jam by Athena DeCrime just seconds later—made possible by great blocking from Malice, Megan Formor, and Ying—stretched the Chicago lead to 78-42 seven minutes into the half.

Baltimore captain Joy Collision danced to the line for the fourth jam, defying what looked to be a pending Windy City blowout. When Varla Vendetta was sent off with a major, Collision showed the speed for which she has become famous, cutting the WCR lead to 79-51. Two jams later, however, Hoosier Mama ran a one-on-one blocking clinic on Baltimore’s Just Carol while Ruth Enasia racked up the night’s biggest jam and the bout’s winning points.

Unfazed, Joy Collision seemed to generate more energy as Charm City fell further behind. Down 106-54, Baltimore kept its foot on the gas while the wheels started coming off the Windy City Express. Further energized by its demonstrative coach, Mr. Pistol, who tried to signal officials about a Chicago penalty by shattering his clipboard with his elbow, Charm City outscored WCR 44-5 over the next 12 minutes as the home team gave away repeated power jams. Windy City played three successive jams with as few as two blockers; Duchess of Torque took advantage in jam 13 by racking up 10 points.

With 1:09 left and Windy City up 115-98, Hoosier Mama—tough as cheap meat and cool as the other side of the pillow—single-handedly tied up Flo Shizzle until Vendetta could sneak out of the box, pick up lead jammer, and seal the win for Chicago, 117-98. Windy City, currently fourth in WFTDA’s national rankings, will take the floor as the Number One seed at the North Central Regional Tournament in St Paul, Minnesota, September 18th and 19th.

Chicago’s Second Wind vs The Burning River Roller Girls

“I feel overmatched,” Tommy Lee Jones’ character says in “No Country for Old Men.” Also fighting an unstoppable and unforgiving force, the Windy City Rollers' “B” team knew the feeling Saturday night. The Second Wind warmed up the UIC Pavilion crowd by hosting the Burning River Roller Girls prior to the main event between the Windy City All-Stars and Charm City. The Second Wind, formed just earlier this summer and playing its first home game ever, played hard but came up short in a 80-38 loss to Cleveland’s A travel team, seeded tenth in the upcoming North Central Regional Tournament.

Second Wind jammers were sent to the box within the first 20 seconds of both the second and third jams, and barely five minutes into the bout Burning River was up 24-0. Some 10 minutes into the half, Second Wind seemed to come together. Amy Nonamey delivered two strong hits at the front of the pack to spring the team’s first lead jammer in jam 6, and Eva Dead got the crowd into the game moments later, taking lead jammer by rounding turn four with her right skate hugging the inside line and her left skate dangling over it.

Second Wind blockers Sargentina, Nonamey, Loco Chanel, and Di Richmond tightened up near the end of the first half, and Second Wind won lead jammer status on the last four jams of the half. But a quick and agile Burning River defense, led by Skank Williams, CoCo Sparx, and Professor Booty held Second Wind scoreless for the last eight minutes. Stroker Ace, Erin Gargiulo and Eva Lucien jammed most often for Burning River and scored the majority of their points. The Killustrator made the most of her limited jamming opportunities, and like a Kola-Loka-in-the-rough, opened her own hole more than once with a wicked head deke.

Deb Autry, a WCR rookie who surprised Chicago crowds early in the home season with impressive jams for the Hell's Belles, showed flashes of athleticism and derby smarts against stiff competition, and veteran Fury player Red Zeppelin flexed some muscle in the pack. Dee Monica registered two grand slams in the second half, sprung loose by Sargentina and Mo Vengeance. Eva Dead, a nationally prominent speed skater and long-time member of the Windy City All-Stars, sat out the Charm City game and jammed for Second Wind. Dead is deadly effective when using her fluid style to take advantage of precision blocking. On this night, however, although she did have a nine-point jam late in the second half, Burning River blockers threw up a wall she could rarely penetrate.

While Burning River won decisively and the outcome was never in question, there is no doubt that the game was a valuable learning experience for Second Wind, who seemed to visibly improve as the game unfolded and was outscored just 37-30 in the second half.

Current mood:  disappointed

Philly beats Windy City 70-69

Philadelphia announcer Hymen Heaven sent a clear message to the Windy City Rollers fans in Chicago's UIC Pavilion at the very beginning of the bout on July 25: “Go ahead and boo. We like it. It only makes us stronger.”

This was a harbinger of things to come as the WCR All-Stars, previously undefeated at home, experienced their first loss of the season to the Philly Roller Girls Liberty Belles, 70-69. The one-point differential and low final score proves how closely matched and defense-heavy these two teams are.

FIRST HALF

The very first jam saw Shocka Conduit facing off against Philly Captain, Teflon Donna. Much to the chagrin of WCR fans, Teflon Donna sailed through the pack to establish lead jam and managed to put four points on the board while Windy City remained scoreless.

The second jam of the evening featured Windy City c-captain Varla Vendetta on the line with Philly’s Mo Pain. A heavy hitting WCR defense and a nice assist from Hoosier Mama in the front of the pack propelled Varla to a three point jam.

As the game progressed, the pack became increasingly physical with heavy hits all around. Blossom Bruiso took out Philly jammer Persephone with a massive hit in jam three, but that still didn’t deter her from getting lead jam status. Before she could get too comfortable, however, WCR jammer Athena DeCrime was hot on her trail, forcing her to call the jam.

The heavy defense of both teams kept the score relatively low for the majority of the first half, but unfortunately for WCR fans, Philly’s excellent teamwork resulted in the overwhelming majority of lead jam statuses going to the visiting team. Time after time, the Liberty Belles were able to pick apart Chicago’s defense, enabling their jammers to sail through. In addition, WCR was plagued by penalties, and several key players, such as Megan Formor, were taken out of commission by frequent trips to the box.
In the latter half of the period, Philadelphia slowly began to build on their lead, but fan favorite Shocka Conduit electrified the crowd with a grand slam in jam 17, bringing the score to 39-21 Philly.

The final jam of the period ended abruptly when Ying O’Fire’s massive hit on Philly jammer, Mo Pain, resulted in an injury that ended the jam and the half. Mo, while shaken, did recover to skate in the second half. After the buzzer, the score remained 39-21 in Philadelphia’s favor.

SECOND HALF

WCR jammer Shocka Conduit started the period off with a bang by getting the first lead of the half and putting two more points on the board for WCR. Philly jammer Persephone fought her way past Chicago blockers Malice With Chains and Megan Formor and forced Shocka to call the jam.

The next jam saw Windy City Captain Varla Vendetta facing off against Violet Temper. Looking very defensive, Varla Vendetta was clearly choosing her moment carefully due to the slow pack. Violet Temper got lead, and Vendetta, trapped behind a wall of blue, was unable to put any more points up on the board.

The phenomenal Ying O’Fire laid out Philly jammer Gloria Grindem in the next jam and despite being temporarily held up on the line by Philly blocker Nina Knockout, WCR jammer Athena DeCrime managed to score four more points for Chicago.

In the sixth jam of the half, Philly’s Robyn Drugstores ironically sent visiting ref Statisfier careening into the stats table.

Chicago turned the tide in the seventh jam of the half, when WCR jammer Shocka Conduit brought the crowd to its feet with a pivotal 15 point jam, putting Chicago within five points of Philly.

An official timeout was called as the fans went wild in the stands, chanting “Windy City! Windy City!” Not to be outdone, Philly’s bench responded with “We are Philly! We are Philly!”

With Philly jammer Teflon Donna in the box, Chicago jammer Athena DeCrime had an opportunity to capitalize on a power jam, but a very fast pack and a wall of blue at the front prevented her from doing so.

With Athena locked up at the front of the pack, Teflon Donna was out of the box and established lead jam relatively quickly. Her triumph was short-lived however, as powerful hits from Malice With Chains and Blossom Bruiso took her to the outside and introduced her to the VIP section, thus forcing her to call the jam.

With the scoreboard now reading 53-45 Philly, and the clock winding down, the pressure was on WCR to see if they could turn the tide.

Veteran Chicago jammer Varla Vendetta was on the line against Philly jammer Persephone and was determined to do just that. Blossom Bruiso swept Elle Viento aside for Varla to make a clean getaway while Yvette YourMaker slowed the pack on Varla’s scoring drive, allowing WCR to put three more on the board to bring the score to 53-48 with Philadelphia holding onto the lead.

Philly held Chicago to zero points in the next three jams, but due to some brutal defense from Windy City, they were only able to score 12 of their own.

The 12th jam of the half saw a very small pack for Windy City, with Blossom Bruiso and Tori Adore in the box. Chicago jammer Varla Vendetta wisely sought to kill some penalty time by playing defensively. Unfortunately, as soon as they were out of the box, Ying O’Fire took their place and Philly jammer Gloria Grindem streaked past Nina Millimeter to establish lead. Unfortunately for Varla, Philly blockers Teflon Donna and Heavy Flo trapped her in the middle of the pack and forced her to draw a back blocking major.

Philly’s power jam carried over into the next jam as Persephone was the only one on the line. Unfortunately, there was a wall of black between her and freedom. Malice With Chains took her out with a brutal block and the Philly jammer was sent to the box. Meanwhile, Varla came roaring out of the penalty box, ready to do some damage of her own, but Violet Temper forced her to return to the box with a back block major.
With the score now 65-56, Philly called a timeout to try to hang onto their momentum.
With Varla still in the box, Philly’s Ginger Vitis was the only jammer on the track.

Hoosier Mama, Nina Millimeter and Ying O’Fire made her life hell with continuous blocks and she was only able to put four on the board before calling it.

There were huge hits all over the track in the following jam as Chicago favorite Shocka Conduit managed to bring Windy City within four points of their rivals, much to the delight of the fans. The score was then 69-65 Philly.

The crowd roared to its feet as the bout neared its end. Only four points separated these two well-matched teams and anything could happen.

Chicago Captain Varla Vendetta was ready to put it all on the line in the next jam against Elle Viento, and she wouldn’t have much help due to WCR penalties that had landed Yvette YourMaker, and Blossom Bruiso in the box. Undeterred, the always-dependable Vendetta deftly sliced through the pack tieing the game at 69 points each.
The noise of the crowd was almost deafening as Windy City jammer Shocka Conduit sought to seal the deal against Philly’s Teflon Donna.

The two jammers were neck and neck through the pack, but in the last second, Teflon Donna pulled ahead and scored the game winning point to give Philly the upset in this thrilling bout.

If you think you know who will win the 2009 Ivy King Cup, you may want to reconsider

The 3000+ derby appreciators, who seemed as grateful for the roving
beer vendors and comfortable seats as they were for the action on the
track, watched The Windy City Rollers' 2009 Intraleague Season Opener on Jan. 31 at the Rollers' new home, the UIC Pavilion.

Bout 1: Manic Attackers vs. Double Crossers

The match between the Double Crossers and the Manic Attackers brought that
sense of unpredictability home in thrilling fashion, as a revitalized Manics
squad burst out of the gate with their wheels blazing and in fabulous bright
blue "Manictard" uniforms to boot. The Double Crossers, the only team with
no rookies, are known for sticking with what works. However, their
tried-and-true defensive strategy failed to affect the nascent power of the
Manic Attackers who emerged a brand new team.

Final score: Manic Attackers 120; Double Crossers 51

Bout 2: Hell's Belles v. The Fury

This was a closer match-up, until the second half saw a pull-away by last
year¹s champions, the Hell's Belles. A couple of big Fury jams in the first
half saw points scored with the Belles' jammer in the box. Hard blocks from
both teams were the order of the night, with crushing blows registered
before jammers even reached a scrumming pack. The flagrant assault favored
by The Fury and Hell's Belles defenses had the penalty box full-to-bursting,
which left holes and produced a high-scoring match. In the end, the hits
seemed to wear harder on Fury jammers. The Hell's Belles extend their
winning streak to 8-0.

Final score The Fury 80, the Hell's Belles 122

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Starting on October 25th the WCR - Chicago's premier women's flat-track roller derby league - will hold all home bouts at the UIC Pavilion (www. uicpavilion. com). The arena is located on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago, 525 S. Racine Ave., just minutes from the Chicago Loop, making it easy for local and traveling fans to attend and providing room for WCR's fan base to keep growing.

The 10,000-capacity Pavilion hosts a wide variety of sporting events including the WNBA's Chicago Sky, the UIC Flames men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball teams. For the WCR this move means more seating, better views of the track, and a centralized location that will enhance the visibility of the 7 nationally ranked Windy City Rollers throughout the greater Chicagoland area. The move also represents a huge stride in the league's goal of making the Windy City Rollers a recognizable, renowned, and respected name in local sports.

The league is timing this move with the adoption of a new roller derby-specific skating surface, Skate Court (www. icecourt. com/roller_derby. html). This portable, easy to set up floor has become the nationwide flat-track roller derby standard. WCR's Skate Court purchase was made possible by proceeds from ticket sales and a generous fan donation, and opens the door for WCR to host future regional and national derby tournaments.

For the past three years, the WCR has been playing a few miles south of the city, at The Stadium in Cicero (the league played its first season's home games at the historic Congress Theater). As bouts began selling out the 1,500-capacity Cicero Stadium, the league looked into finding a space in its namesake city that would enable league growth to continue at the same rapid pace. In early 2008 the WCR Board of Directors was approached by UIC representatives about the possibility of bringing Chicago's only nationally ranked roller derby league to the Pavilion, and an agreement was formalized in July that will keep the WCR in the city and at the Pavilion for the next several years.

The first official bout at UIC Pavilion will take place on October 25, 2008, when the WCR All-Stars host the Carolina All-Stars of Raleigh, NC. This Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA)-sanctioned interleague bout will serve as a preview of both the new space and the new floor.

The Windy City Rollers will open its fifth home season at the UIC Pavilion in January 2009.
