Helllllo, pussycats!
Join us this Saturday, September 26 for a little bit of Vegas as we celebrate our Unholy Matrimony with local eco-art group SCRAP. One night and one night only we'll throw open the doors of posh agency CMD (1631 NW Thurman St.) for a show like no show you've seen before. $20 buys your ticket to the event--all the gaming, booze, singing, and gourmet goodies you could want lie just beyond the door. So dust off your blue suede shoes and come along!

WHAT YOU'LL SEE
Enter a world where Showgirls (and boys!) in brilliant sequins and feathers mingle with you, sipping wine as they guide you down the Grand Staircase to any of our amazing activity areas. A fountain of chocolate glimmers beneath dazzling Vegas lights. Our Live Opera Jukebox singers will serenade you with the best of Tom Jones, Verdi, Celine Dion, and the King himself, Elvis Presley. If you're quick, you may even catch a glimpse of him....

WHAT YOU'LL DO
After grabbing a drink and some of Chef Melinda Casady's incredible food, head over to one of our gaming tables--Blackjack (for you hard-core players) and SCRAP-created takes on exuberant childhood faves (you know you've missed 'em) like Go Fish, now with simul-poles! If you're feeling more in the mood for love than war, stop by our Chapel of Elvis where you can try on wedding paraphernalia, make your own veil or corsage, and renew or pledge your vows with an actual officiant (just get your paperwork in order).

WHAT YOU'LL REMEMBER
That's up to you. But it might involve glitter. This night can be just about anything you make it--and all for an entrance fee of only $20!*

WHY THIS MATTERS
Fun events like this help keep our ticket prices affordable to a wide audience. If you think opera is not scary and want to help spread the word about how awesome it (and OTO!) is, come party with us! You'll get a great show, great food, and great fun while helping a great cause. But we need your response soon! So click for tix today!
*$20 in advance, $25 at the door.

SEEKING COMPOSER
For Opera Cinema Collaboration, "Ercole Contro i Vampiri" (Hercules Vs. Vampires) Filmusik and Opera Theater Oregon are seeking proposals from composers for an original collaborative project to be debuted in 2010. Combining the alt-classical tradition of OTO and live film+music pairings of Filmusik, the performance will feature a live operatic soundtrack for the 1961 Italian film 'Ericole Contro I Vampiri' (Hercules Vs. Vampires). The libretto and soundtrack will be in English and follow the dialogue in the film directly, in this way both scoring and dubbing the film. The score will be performed live by four principal and four supporting singers and a chamber music ensemble of up to 12 instrumentalists.

Proposals are due September 4, 2009 at 5:00 pm. Details and instructions available for download at http://operatheateroregon.com/callboard.html

FILMUSIK: DEATH RIDES A HORSE

http://www.filmusik.com

When the lights go down at the Hollywood Theatre and the projector rolls, a 40 person chorus and chamber orchestra wait under the screen to bring a new thundering orchestral soundtrack to a classic film...

ECCE New Music Orchestra and the Opera Theatre Oregon Chorus perform an original soundtrack to the 1960's spaghetti western classic.  The original score composed by Gracin Dorsey and Sam L. Richards, director of  ECCE New Music, premieres under the screen at the Hollywood Theatre  in a flurry of grit, gunsmoke and glockenspiels.

What is a Spaghetti Western?
The Spaghetti Western is a term used to describe Western films made during primarily the 1960s by Italian directors. Since making Western films could often be accomplished with less expense in Europe, the Spaghetti Western became a popular alternative to westerns made in the US. In addition, the camera techniques, plot devices, and strong violence of the films ultimately redefined the genre of Western films.

Death Rides a Horse (aka Da uomo a uomo)
directed by Giulio Petroni, written by Luciano Vincenzoni, and starring Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law. Bill Meceita, a boy whose family was murdered in front of him by a gang, sets out 15 years later to exact revenge. On his journey, he finds himself continually sparring and occasionally cooperating with Ryan, a gunfighter on his own quest for vengeance, who knows more than he says about Bill's tragedy.

Dear Friends of OTO,
On a weekend that features the unholy collision of the Summer Solstice and Father's Day, OTO will be back at Clinton Street Theater with a set of 11 surreal film shorts dating from 1907 to 1957, soundtracked by 11 fabulous opera singers, cabaret band and live sound effects.

We do have some disappointing news to share this month. Due to an unexpected funding shortfall, we have decided to postpone the much-anticipated 'Baywatch/Das Rheingold'. 'BW/DR' is now part of OTO's 2009-10 season, and we're pleased to be able to say that our original cast and crew are still on board for the production. With an extra eight months to lay down a base coat, their tans should be blinding.

In its place, we're very pleased to be able to offer this one-weekend revival of 'Opera Cinema: Dada', which originally debuted with a single performance at Someday Lounge in 2007. Thanks to feedback from our audience, we're offering an all ages show on Father's Day followed up in the evening by a show for dads who prefer beer with their dada.

Despite the disappointment of having to postpone 'Baywatch,' we're excited to have an opportunity to remount 'Dada', on a big screen and with all the (in this case, literal) bells and whistles. Hope to see you all at the theater! If not for our show, then for someone else's. Your dynamic Portland arts community needs you more than ever right now. Thanks for your support!

Elizaebeth Nielsen Sheller, Executive Director

OTO Executive Director Elizaebeth Nielsen-Sheller described the upcoming event, “[Dadaist poet] Kurt Switterz said it best, ‘The cow is mother to the milk, and grandma both to cheese and butter. The cheese is cousin to the marmalade.’”

The live soundtrack features the exquisite melodies of Verdi, Puccini, Fauré and others. Embrace the absurd: give Dada a hug.

Opera Cinema: Dada is paired with a big screen showing of the notorious almost-silent classic, Daughter of Horror (1955). Soundtracked by Twentieth-century classical music’s bad boy, George Antheil, the film features early performances by Marni Nixon and Ed McMahon.

Can you hassle the hoff?

OTO is still seeking a Larry/Alberich and Mitch/Wotan for our upcoming Baywatch/Das Rheingold.

Saturday, March 22. By appointment only. Accompanist provided. All principal and supporting roles are paid.

Contact Artistic Director Katie Taylor to set up an appointment. Email only, please (no phone calls). kt@operatheateroregon.com.

BAYWATCH/DAS RHEINGOLD
An OTO original, this show smashes up the first opera in Wagner's Ring Cycle with a Baywatch episode ('K-GAS The Groove Yard of Solid Gold,' season 5). Includes spoken dialogue. Music rescripted in English. Opera interweaves the storylines of 'K-GAS' with 'Rheingold' (you'd be amazed how similar they are). By kind permission of Baywatch series creator Greg Bonnan.

Baywatch/Das Rheingold will have 5 performances at Someday Lounge in late June/early July 2009 (dates TBA) and rehearse from mid- to late-May through opening.

Audition will include a reading of a selection from the script, which we'll email you on receipt of your audition request.

We don't need real Wagnerians for this show, given that we're doing it in a bar (a small venue) with limited instrumentation. We'll be looking for performers with good comic timing and acting chops who can vocally sustain a full, gorgeous lyric line.

Auditioners are encouraged to bring in art songs or arias by Strauss, Wagner, Mahler, Puccini, Korngold, or anyone else who taxes holy hell out of your breath support.
