Kingsessing Fire Kills Mom, 3 Children
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ? A fast moving row home killed a Southwest Philadelphia mother and three children Thursday night. A fourth child escaped with a minor hand injury.
The fire began just after 9:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of S. 56th Street in the Kingsessing section of the city.
Heavy flames prevented firefighters from reaching four people trapped inside the home. Fire officials said it took less than a half hour to extinguish the blaze, but they were unable to get to the victims in time.
"As the firefighters put it, 'Commissioner, you couldn't put another inch of fire in that building,' and that's what they had to try to beat back to go and try to save those folks," said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers.
A 36-year-old mother, identified by family members as Kathy White, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her two daughters, 14-year-old Melinda and 8-year-old Cheyenne and a 4-year-old child were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where they were pronounced dead.
Fire officials said White's son, 17-year-old Kylil Ross, was rescued from the roof after climbing out a second-floor window. He was treated for a hand injury.
Family members and friends are devastated by the tragic loss.
"They were very close, that's why they probably found them in the same room, many times you would find Kathy in the front room and everyone else cuddled up underneath her," said the victim's sister Donna Winston.
Ayers said, once again, they are dealing with a tragedy that may have been prevented with the installation of working smoke alarms.
"We haven't been able at this point to find any smoke alarms. We haven't found one, we haven't found a shell of one, nothing," he said.
"I wanna tell everyone to make sure that you have smoke detectors and make sure that you always have a safety plan of action," said Winston.

12/7/06. tsss. a crazy day, i it started wit a referral, later on, a phone came to your number, and shocking news missy didnt come home from west philly high yet around 6 o' clock. 7&8 she showed up but we alreddy left for choir rehearsel. between 8 & 9, i tried four time to call, once it answered, the next it juss made that busy sound, until ma mom calld when we got home, the same busy signal, and we turned on the news to see breaking news in southwest that a corner house resembled to yours was on fire, i didnt see ti until the next morning my sleep was interruppted by my mom face and her eyes holding tears back and the exact words came out to me and alex "as you it took me a while to git home yesterday after i was dropping them ppl off, but you know missy came home late so we couldnt take her and.....wh-while iwas out nana seen a house on fire and cald me asking me to call kathy... and... your aunt kathy cheyenne keith and missy are al dead!!!" that word echoed in my head b4 any tears came out, dead? one forever, until some never promised after life, no more, septa 42 to baltimore and walk to pentridge, none of that?no i cant do it! Why? was the the first question a asked my self follwing hot tears rolling down my face! why not me? why cant they take me? why must the good die young? alot of questions i had! after that things never seemd, reel or safe, for about 3-5 weeks a brought a knife to school and too church unsure of what might happen if nowaday we got 4 year olds dyin, theyre first reactio nwas to take blame on keith, he was putting stuff in the heater, he was playin with matches, but i took tha blame if that was the cause, me and lil always tried to teach him to be more like us forgetting i wanted to be more like lil! and now juss like that i went from waiting till friday for you to move into my house with us so i could live in the same house when my mom moves to delware, to waiting til next thursday, picking out suits and talkin to some white man with greasy hair cameras and a microphone who dont care bout anything but putting his channel number 1! the same damn person that went on TV telling us that they would still be alive if they had a smoke detector, was stairing in my face like he cared asking me for pictures, i swore by god to kill him, gut him and put his head on Youtube, but nah, ya death showed me im more of a man then that! member you always told me git ma braids cut off, you werent even here to see that, what you waited for! i cant go one day without you on my mind! a week after the seventh i could have sworn i talked to missy in my dreams, or maybe that was my imagination!
