Current mood: quixotic
So we've gotten a few questions about our recording as one might guess, and perhaps even hope. In this light, our lead singer sat down with the songwriter to iron out a few subjects. Here are answers to some of those questions for the inquiring mind:
Q: What is this 84WEST disc? A: It's halfway between a demo and an EP. It has five songs, but it's a little more complicated than most demos and a little less polished than most EPs. The way we see it: if we're trying to sell you on the songs, it's a demo, if we can sell you a disc, it's an EP. Yeah. Something like that.
Q: Why did you cut it? A: Because we could. That, and we think they're good songs that can be used in a variety of ways. Mostly it's "Sunday morning" material, but there's performance-related material in there, too.
Q: What are you going to do with it? A: Great question, actually. We aren't big important music people, so we're still a little green on just how we're supposed to handle this. If you know what we're supposed to do with a demo disc, click the prifile button to your left, find the link that says "Send Message" (or something like that) and let us know, will you? Thanks. Until such time, we're just going to distribute a copy to anyone who has use for it!
Q: Are you going to be big stars in Nashville? A: It's doubtful. Consider this: the population of Nashville is 613,856. 12 of those people are actual money-making musicians. 613,844 of them work at Kinkos or the diner, and leave vapor from their breath on studio windows just trying to get in. Alright, maybe I tweaked the demographics and got a little dramatic, but you get the drift. There are so many talented people in Music City that can't catch the tiniest break -- what makes us think that we're just going to march in and take over the town? Could we make it there? Who knows? We sure think so, but we're not going to pack up without a job waiting for us there, either!
Q: Have you gotten the disc to any VIPs? A: Yes. We have all distributed them to our mothers, and they are crazy about it. My mother wrote a nice note of recommendation to Dan Huff. He must have enjoyed that a lot. (See the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond entitled "Lucky Suit" if this doesn't make sense to you.)
Q: What? No discs in the hands of big Nashville execs? A: Are you kidding? They get so many demos and solicitations every day, we'd be lucky if they used it as a coaster! Nashville bigwigs could never possibly listen to all the demos they get, and they most certainly aren't searching through MySpace Music profiles for the next great song or the next hot band. Our disc would be just one more among thousands. Also, giving out demos is a great way to lose friends. Nothing like thinking people are just after you for your influence, and it's not worth it to us. If you want to schmooze us, that's fine, though.
Q: Don't you have faith in your songs? A: Sure! We posted them here, after all! It'll just take the right person hearing them at the right time in the right mood for anything to happen with them. We are going to try to promote them as much as we can, and ask God to work on the hearers.
Q: Are these all the songs you have? A: Nope. That's just all the money we had to record them. If you can find a way for us to make more money, we'll cut more songs for you.
Q: The music sounds kind of redneck. Is that intended? A: We're from Idaho. What did you expect?
Q: Is it country music with Christian words, or Christian music with twang? A: Yes. We're actually quite an eclectic group. Our guitarist cites Paul Gilbert and Nuno Bettencourt as influences. Our drummer lists Saosin and Underoath as his. Andy likes Merle, Don Williams, and Conway Twitty, while Phyllis likes Michael W. Smith and Paul Baloche, but the songwriter/lead singer likes George, Garth, Clint, Josh Turner, and old cowboys. Consequently, the songs sound like modern country music with a western kick.
Q: How can I get a copy of the disc? A: Just ask. We have yet to refuse anyone.
Q: One final question. Do you realize that the same person has both asked and answered all these questions? A: Yes.
There it is, folks. If this doesn't satisfy your thirst for knowledge about the band, the songs, the disc, or anything else, just let us know. We're still small enough to crave feedback... and tips. Either is welcome.
