This question was asked by a member in our MerchantCircle Network so I'm going to try to answer it as best as I can. Your main web site is your organization's page for all your products, about your organization, your stats, etc - the boring one or the mother/father site.  However, a microsite (which uses a different URL from your main site) is an informational site that's based on one particular product or product group (or holiday or an event) - it's a marketing tool.

A microsite can be a temporary site or a permanent site that changes with the market.  It's the fun site - typically, people would have multimedia, animation, etc for their microsite. In addition, because it's content specific and narrow in focus, it tends to carry a higher page rank with search engines.  Microsites are easier to optimize for keywords and phases for search engines than their main web site. As long as the content is good, the sie is focus and the marketing objectives are clear, a microsite will typically land on the first page of Google - make your microsite relevant to Google users and Google will find it.
