Year in Review: 2009's Best Proves the Stars Are Shifting in Latin Music By Christopher Lopez in Year in Review Mon., Dec. 14 2009 @ 2:24PM Los Amigos InvisiblesComercial(Nacional) It's been fourteen years since the Amigos' 1995 debut, and contrary to what the title of their latest album implies, the group remains as dedicated as ever to their initial mission of being Venezuelan anti-heroes in a scene dominated by rock and salsa. Of course, that scene has expanded considerably as the band has gone global, and the influences that converge on this record seem as far-flung as ever. The outcome? Latin-funk-house with incisive wit.

The Nat Geo Music Interview: Los Amigos Invisibles

Nat Geo Music Catches Up With Everybody's Favorite Grammy-Winning Venezuelan Disco Funk Party Band by Nokware Knight Intentionally or not, Los Amigos Invisibles - the Venezuelan disco-funk band - habitually refers to their music as being larger than themselves. The band members have openly acknowledged their contributions to the artistically vibrant and commercially stymied Venezuelan music scene, idolized bands that emphasize the importance of group over individual by staying together for decades, and refer to themselves simply as "a dance band" whose music transcends countries and languages of origin. LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES WIN FIRST CAREER GRAMMY Latest Release, ‘Commercial,’ Is Awarded A Latin GRAMMY For “Best Alternative Album”; It Was The Band’s Fifth-Career GRAMMY Nomination
UPCOMING SHOWS: November 7 - The Conga Room (Los Angeles, CA) November 28 – The Fillmore at Irving Plaza (New York, NY)
PRAISE FOR ‘COMMERCIAL’: "[Los Amigos Invisibles] bridge language barriers by making their music relentlessly accessible... Non-stop propulsion makes this summer party disc soar like a non stop to Caracas.” - SPIN (8/10 Star Review)
“The simple fact is, just about anyone who hears [‘Commercial’] will like something about it. Their songs are melodic, funky as hell, and are pretty much guaranteed to get dance floors pumping… A killer summer album.” -ALL MUSIC GUIDE
“One part ‘70s crime-drama keyboards, two parts porno flick bass-lines, a dash of groovy funk guitar riffs and a glaze of hip shakin’ Latin beats... Los Amigos Invisibles make their triumphant return with their new album, ‘Commercial.’” - FILTER
Los Amigos Invisibles won their first career Latin GRAMMY last night as their latest release, ‘Commercial,’ won “Best Alternative Album.” It was the band’s fifth career GRAMMY nomination. Los Amigos recently completed an extensive tour through the southeast U.S., including the Austin City Limits Festival. They have major shows in Los Angeles and their hometown New York City over the next couple weeks.
Los Amigos Invisibles are notorious for their electrifying live sets. “Being a touring band is a great way to test songs and to try out new ideas,” primary songwriter/lead guitarist Jose Luis Pardo says. “We now write most of our music with the purpose of fitting them into our live sets. Playing so much live makes you really aware of what kind of stuff gets people this way or that way. Aside from testing songs, we can't hold new tracks for that long. As soon as we think a song is ready to be played, we let loose. It's like having a new weapon, a funky weapon.”
With new album “Commercial,” the group has tightened their hooks and focused their songs, recording their most accessible work yet. The album features a variety of special guests from Jorge Gonzalez (of Chilean rock legends Los Prisioneros) and Mexican songstress Natalia Lafourcade to Senor Coconut vocalist Argenis Brito and Los Tetas’ C-funk. Los Amigos also enlisted production work from friends like Dimitri From Paris and Cachorro López (Belanova, Miranda).
“Along the way we have met many musicians we admire and in the best scenario we always end our conversations saying, ‘we should do something together one day,’” Pardo says. “There is an added value in sending the tracks away, then getting them back from guests, producers or engineers and just being blown away. I love surprises.”
Los Amigos Invisibles spent two years working on ‘Commercial’ during breaks in their heavy tour schedule. “The title of the album came out of our desire to make a more accessible record for even bigger crowds,” Pardo explains. “At first, we were hesitant to use the word but eventually we decided to come straight and use it as a concept. In a world where almost no one listens to an entire album and everyone has their thumb ready to press ‘next’ in their iPods, we just wanted to be more focused without taking out what we love about playing.”

Los Amigos Invisibles10/26/2009 By Rayme Samuels We recently caught up with Armando Figueredo, keyboard player of Los Amigos Invisibles, to chat about their recent Grammy nomination for Best Latin Alternative album and love of Miami’s beaches. How do you hope the people of Miami will respond to your newest album, Comercial? I hope that people respond well. We love Miami, we love the people there. We are really happy with what’s going on with the new album. We’ve been fortunate enough to be nominated again for a Latin Grammy and have done well on ITunes and Amazon.
Congratulations on your recent Latin Grammy nomination! What does it mean to you to have the new album recognized? It is a really pleasant experience, especially since the past two records that we have been nominated for we have done for ourselves, not a record label. We produced it with our own ideas. We are very grateful, although it’s not the reason why we put out records. We love playing live and if [the win] doesn’t happen we will be alright.
You’ve been in the music business for 18 years and have toured in over 60 countries- what is your secret to success? The two keys to success? First of all, working hard and being constant. Keeping at it and having a lot of love for what you do, especially at times like this when the music industry is all over the place. That and a little bit of luck like what happened when David Byrne first heard our album in a little record store in New York and signed us to his label (Luaka Bop in 1996).
I’ve heard that some of your band mates have decided to make South Florida their permanent home. What influenced their decisions to move here? José, Julio and Mauricio all live in Miami now. [The other half of the band have remained in New York]. New York is a very cold climate and living space is limited. It’s definitely not what we are used to from Venezuela when we were living there. We travel around most of the year so we still see each other a lot.
What do you guys do when in Miami? Mostly visit friends’ places and go to the beach. I don’t really know Miami all that well. There are a few Cuban restaurants I love but I don’t remember the names. But the beach of course- I have to stop there and soak in the water. Visit their website at www.amigosinvisibles.com.

Los Amigos Invisibles surface at Austin City Limits
AUSTIN — Los Amigos Invisibles are known for stunning audiences worldwide with their Latin-infused, neo-funk sound. But to the Venezuelan expats, all the international acclaim comes second to doing what they love.
"We play the music we like, and our selections are always a surprise. No tour is ever the same," said drummer Jose Manuel Roura Saturday morning, sitting in the lobby of their hotel.
The six-member outfit looked a bit beat after performing for fans Friday during the Austin City Limits Music Festival, followed up by an aftershow at one of the city’s most eclectic music venues, La Zona Rosa. But they would be leaving for their next gig in Dallas feeling quite satisfied, band members said.
"Austin is a hyper-musical city," said Armando Figueredo, who plays keyboards for Los Amigos. "There is nothing like that energy. The people give themselves to what we play."
At this weekend’s shows, the band spun the funk, pop and disco laced with Spanish lyrics and conga beats that has put them up for two Grammy nominations and three Latin Grammy nominations.
Starting out in small bars and venues in Caracas during the 1990s, the group took off in 1995 when they played a series of shows in New York City and left CDs at various record stores, band members said. As luck would have it, art rock icon David Byrne, best known as singer/songwriter for the Talking Heads, bought one of their CDs and soon signed them unto his music label, Luaka Bop.
The band now has six studio albums, including their newest, "Commercial," which hit stores this summer and includes collaborations with the likes of famed producers DJ Dimitri from Paris and Cachorro López (Belanova, Miranda) and major artists, including Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade.
"We completely produced this album," bassist José Rafael Torres said. "We reached out to all of the friends we have met throughout ours years in the music business and said, ‘Here add something to it.’"
Playing for audiences in the U.S., which are more open to listening to unfamiliar music artists, has been a change, band members said. Bu Latinos continue to be their most loyal fans, they said.
And they don’t see themselves stopping anytime soon.
"To be able to live off of this is wonderful," Figueredo said.
