The Ashtabula County Animal Protective League will hold the 7th annual Boo
Wow Walk Oct. 18 at Maple Ridge Golf Course.
The event, which is the shelter's biggest fundraiser of the year, has new
treats and new tricks, event co-chairperson Gitta Racinskas said.
"This year the top sponsor earner will win a 2008 Wildfire motor scooter. It
gets 85 miles per gallon!" Racinskas said.
The scooter is just one prize at the walk. Second prize for sponsorship is a
$500 Walmart gift card, the third best dollar earner will win a Nintendo
Wii.
Other sponsor winners can win gift certificates to local businesses, signed
t-shirts and hats by Jesse James of West Coast Choppers, and prize baskets.
For the $18 registration fee, walkers receive a reusable grocery bag and
they can walk through Maple Ridge Golf Course and collect treats along the
way. Dogs and owners can participate in the costume contest, get a pet
portrait taken, get a canine pedicure, buy hot dogs and much more. Dan
"Hoss" Nugent of WKKY will broadcast live from the event.
The event is sponsored, in part, by Giant Eagle, Maple Ridge Golf Course,
Country Doctor Veterinary, Dollar Tree customers, and Walmart. The event will
be produced by GhostLight Productions of Jefferson.
The walk is the APL's biggest fundraiser of the year and raised $40,000 last
year to keep the shelter running through the new year, Racinskas said.
Racinskas said early registration is encouraged as the shelter is planning
for 500 walkers.
Registration starts at noon and the walk starts at 1 p.m. For more
information go to
www.boowow.acapl.net or call Racinskas at 440-466-3966.
Registration forms are also available at the Ashtabula Mall shelter site and
many local businesses.

1+1= 420,000

WHY EAT SPAYGHETTI?

One female cat and one male cat and their offspring
can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years

1+1= 67,000
One female dog and one male dog and their offspring
can produce 67,000 puppies in six years

It is estimated that every day 70,000 cats and dogs are born.  Compared that to the 10,0000 humans that are born daily, and there just isn't enough homes for all of these animals.  Over 7,000,000 of these animals are euthanized annually because of the lack of homes.  That is equivalent to 20,000 per hour.

As part of its mission, the ACAPL is dedicated to bringing the number of stray animals in Ashtabula County down. That can be achieved by spay and neutering all of the stray animals that come through our doors and by providing programs to bring these services to low-income families.

Your donation at the event helps the ACAPL (a non profit organization) provide means to continue this effort. So bring a friend, or two or three. Bring the whole family. Help us help the ACAPL.  Join us for a 50/50 Raffle, Door Prizes, and a Silent Auction.  You can make a difference.  It costs less then taking your family out to eat at a restaurant, and you are feeding yourselves as well as feeding a good cause.

We will be providing spaghetti with marinara sauce, choice of mushrooms or meatballs, roll with butter, desserts and beverages.

Did you recently adopt a cat from the APL? How was your experience? TELL US HERE!

We would love to hear how your kitty is running your household.

Monday, July 28, 2008
KINGSVILLE — With a wink and a stretch, Hazel the cat reluctantly wakes up from her nap.
Someone is here to see her, and she isn't about to waste the opportunity for a little kitty adoration.
Hazel, a predominantly white calico with colored ears and a sweet personality, is waiting for a home, which the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League volunteers believe is just around the corner.
The APL workers watched 75 cats find new homes last week and are pushing for more during a feline liquidation of sorts as months of sluggish cat adoptions and the burden of several large-number intakes spurred the shelter to hold a cat adoption special.
Faced with euthanizing 94 cats, the shelter is offering cat adoptions for $5, which includes spaying or neutering and vaccinations. Every adoptable cat and kitten are included in the sale.
"And believe me, we are spaying and neutering as many kittens as we can as they become of age," APL board member Diane Carr said. "We had 14 kittens fixed on Saturday, and they were all adopted. More are on the surgery schedule now."
Sunday is the deadline for the APL's adoption special.
Carr said while the fee is just $5 per cat, many people are donating more, to cover the $150 veterinary bills for each cat.
"People have been wonderful, and I hope they understand this predicament. I mean, yes, we have adopted 75 cats in a week, but more cats are coming in every day," she said. "To keep this program going, we need the support of the community."
The shelter also has 106 dogs of all breeds and sizes. The shelter's occupancy limit on dogs is 80, Carr said.
"We just hope people keep opening their homes to these pets," Carr said. "The response to this sale has been phenomenal. I have never seen such a huge response to our sales."
The APL shelter, located at 5970 Green Road, is open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Friday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
The APL Mall Adoption Center is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday at the Ashtabula Mall.
For more information on the shelter or a specific animal, call (440) 224-1222. The shelter animals are also listed, with pictures, at http://ashtabulaapl.petfinder.org.

With 164 cats in a shelter built for 50, the APL has made the difficult decision to euthanize cats for cage space. Starting in two weeks, the cats will be put down from least adoptable down.

The shelter is giving the cats the very best chance at adoption by reducing the cost to $5 per cat...which includes spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations.

Cats have a lot of uses in the house or in the barn. At $5 per cat, you can't go wrong with the deal.

PLEASE come out and adopt a cat or kitten. EVERY adoptable cat and kitten is included in the sale. As the felines are spayed/neutered, even more will be available. Pass the word. Tell a friend. SAVE A CAT.

KINGSVILLE — Glowing yellow eyes peer out from a windowsill, a sideways glance and a fuzzy, whiskered face turns toward the sunshine.
Gypsy the cat is sleepy and generally unimpressed with her surroundings. A plate of food, a friend to share her cage with, it is just the life of an Ashtabula County Animal Protective League cat.
But Gypsy and her fine feline friends don't realize the desperation of their situation, as the APL struggles to adopt 94 cats in two weeks, APL board member Diane Carr said.
"It is the sad truth, but if we don't get cat adoptions under control, we will begin euthanizing for cage space in two weeks," she said.
Sluggish cat adoptions and the burden of several large-number intakes have aggravated an already perilous problem, Carr said.
"We have 164 cats in a shelter built for 48. The board has a ceiling of 70 cats in the shelter at any given time. We must bring our cat population down to 70 in two weeks," she said.
Carr said while euthanasia for space is a last resort for the APL shelter, the recent jump in cat population has pushed volunteers and board members to the limit.
"We are to the wall," Carr said. "We are in crisis, truly in crisis. But we have held on to these cats for too long. This population problem has gone on too long. The numbers are scary."
To help the shelter bring the number of cats under control within two weeks, the APL is selling cats for $5 each, which includes spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations. Every adoptable cat and kitten is included in the sale.
"Do I think we will be able to adopt out 94 cats in two weeks? Not likely," Carr said. "But we feel this is the best way to give these cats the best shot at adoption. All we can do now is pray people come forward and adopt."
The shelter animals are also listed with pictures at http://ashtabulaapl.petfinder.org.

TRUMBULL TOWNSHIP — The light music of a flute carried on a soft breeze through the Medieval Faire Sunday, the afternoon calm and warm amid the renaissance festivities.
Tied in a shady spot, Julie the hound dog did some people watching as Ashtabula County Animal Protective League volunteers worked to find her a home. It was impossible to know that Julie's story would not end in a happy adoption or even that the dog would not even have a cage at the shelter by the end of the day.
Julie broke away from her handler at the Medieval Faire and ran off into the wooded area of the fictional town of Avaloch, APL volunteer Dawn Shimp said.
"She just got spooked and ran off," Shimp said. "We looked for her (on Sunday) and again (Monday) but with no luck."
APL officials are especially concerned about Julie's recent spay surgery stitches.
"Also, there is a concern about the lack of people in that area during the week," Shimp said. "But we do feel Julie will stay in the area because there will be food and at least some people in and out of the faire grounds."
Shimp said Julie is a little skittish, but very friendly toward people and dogs. She is 1 to 2 years old and up-to-date on her shots.
"We are asking that people not chase her, but try to lure her with food or another friendly dog," Shimp said.
The leader of the Ashtabula Animal Advocates group, Shimp has had some experience with missing shelter dogs. In 2006, a rescue dog named Josie got loose in the Austinburg Township area and Shimp looked for her with no luck. Some people claimed to be keeping Josie, but would not allow shelter workers to see her or know of her location.
"We understand that people get attached to an animal or think they will have to pay the adoption fee for the dog if they turn it in, but that is not the case here," Shimp said. "The Ashtabula Animal Advocates will donate Julie's adoption fee if the person who finds her wants to keep her. We only ask for that closure, to be able to know that she is OK."
For more information about Julie or to report sightings, visit http://ashtabulaapl.blogspot.com/ or call Tammy Dondorfer at (440) 724-2704.

Okay, it's desperation time again at the Ashtabula APL.    They are currently housing 245 animals in a shelter that was only built to house 48 dogs.  With no air conditioning.   We need rescue help desperately.

This is a shelter that aspires to be no-kill, and truly does have the best interests of the animals at heart.   But it is the only animal shelter in the largest county in Ohio, in a very poor, rural area.   They have to take in every animal the city and county dog wardens bring them...this can be hundreds of dogs in a month.   When numbers get up, as they are now, they have to euthanize if we can't get the animals out.

Dogs over 5 years old: $50
Dogs that have been at the shelter more than 2 months: $25
Big black dogs over 6 months old: $25
Right now there is also special pricing on cats.  Only $25 each for fully vetted cats!

Please look at the available dogs and cats below.   Animals will die if we can't get some out right away.   With the 4th tonight there will undoubtedly be many, many more animals coming in.

If you see anyone you are interested in, contact Ashtabula Animal Advocates at ashtabulaanimaladvocates@gmail.com (gmail.com).   We can get you all the information you need on an animal, test for dog friendliness, cat friendliness, kid friendliness, can take more pictures, can take  the animals for a ride in the car to see how they do, really whatever you require.

Amid the constant barking at the Animal Protective League shelter, Gisele the German shepherd hears a familiar voice.

..TR>

Judy Chapman steps onto the concrete shelter floor and as her voice carries over the dogs' din, Gisele's big ears point with alert.

"It breaks my heart to see Gisele here like this. I know I can't take her home with me, but I can help to make her a great pet for someone else," Chapman said.

Chapman is the chairwoman of the Second Chance volunteer program at the APL shelter. Her goal is to give each dog individual attention and expose them to real-life experiences they may face if adopted.

"I take the dogs on car rides and to the park. I take them home with me and, in a very controlled environment, I observe them with children and the elderly," she said.

The program includes some paperwork to pass on all observations to the shelter staff.

"The information really helps out the shelter workers, especially with the information on the kennels. I feel the more information a person has about a dog, the more likely they are to consider adopting that dog," Chapman said.

Chapman is looking for helpers to increase the number of dogs affected by the program. Volunteers are needed one to two hours per week.

As for Gisele, Chapman said the dog is happy and gentle and has blossomed in her time away from the shelter.

"She is a wonderful dog and still here she is, waiting for a home. I know that my time with Gisele has made her into an even better pet than she was before. The goal is to do this for as many dogs as possible," she said.

For more information on the Second Chance program, contact Chapman at (440) 536-4625.

Conneaut resident Henry Ogrodnichek also needs volunteers for his unique APL program.

Ogrodnichek and his team of videographers need volunteers to help videotape the dogs at the shelter for a program on the Conneaut cable access channel.

Ogrodnichek said the program hit a snag last month, bringing production to a halt.

"We lost some volunteers and we just can't do this without them," he said. "We need someone to spend about three hours helping to bring the dogs in and out of the shelter for videoing. It isn't hard work, but it is necessary to have those people to make the program work."

For more information on being an APL video production assistant, call Ogrodnichek at (440) 599-7656.

Donations are being accepted for the ninth annual Garage Sale Bonanza, a 14-charity super garage sale at the former Big Lots building in the Saybrook Plaza.
The sale will be July 11-13 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the former Big Lots building in the Saybrook Plaza on Route 20.
Last year, the APL made $6,000 at the sale. The money helped keep the shelter operating during a critical time, during a PARVO outbreak.
This multi-agency sale will benefit 13 local charities. Just drop off garage sale items (NO CLOTHES) at the former Big Lots store in the Saybrook Plaza and BE SURE to tell the people there the donations are for the APL. The money your items bring in will go towards the APL!
People can drop off items Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays until 8 p.m.

We also need volunteers for the sale DESPERATELY. People are needed to tag items, accept donations and build displays. People of all ages can help, but we really need some strong people, too. So come on by if you can spare an afternoon or more!

The sale also needs to BORROW some TABLES. The folding kind is best. You'll get them back, we just need them for a few months.

This year, the sale will kick off with Antique Appraisal Night June 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Like the television show "Antique Road Show," professionals will be on hand to appraise old and interesting items. Cost is $5 per item.
The Best Stuff corner will be back with all the nicest donated antiques and collectibles. The food court and bake sale will also be held. Preview night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. July 10. Cost for preview night is $10 per person.
For more information, to volunteer or to make arrangements for a donation pickup, call (440) 319-1658, (440) 428-4927 or (440) 997-5353.
