"...a score rich in Hermanesque tradition yet tender and devastating in its lush orchestral sections—Seppuku Paradigm is at the height of the power of scoring here."

(Martyrs review)

Another definite positive is Seppuku Paradigm's musical score. Simply stated, it's amazing. Some scenes captivated me just because of the composition alone. In many ways, it reminded me of John Murphy's work from 28 Days Later and Sunshine---almost like some weird meshing of the two. The music adds so much on a visceral and emotional level that it's almost worth seeing, just so you can hear what they've developed.

The synthesized funk of "The Distorted Reality Show"
and the dirty synths that make up Polymorphic remix of, "Sure Thing."
are amongst the best the EP has to offer. If Seppuku Paradigm were to
take some hints from these songs they might very well morph themselves
synth-terrorists using sub-bass to destroy dancefloors wherever they
go.

"Hard to believe the original release date of Seppuku Pardigm's Unedited/Unreviewed EP was back on April 10, 2007. The album featuring the zone-rock gem The Crossing still seems to be getting considerable play, and it never sounds cheap despite the band having an extremely limited budget to work with. The band, formed in 2005 by brothers Alex and Willie Cortés, features a sound as equally unique as the inspiration behind the name: Japanese author Yukio Mishima failed in an attempted coup d'état, and committed suicide according to ancient Japanese tradition (seppuku or hara kiri) in a gesture of public protest. Alex Cortés was also working with another band with its own singular sound (and one of our favorites),Downliners Sekt. Seppuku Paradigm also make excellent use of some computer-generated ingredients in their music, and the best thing about it is that it's hardly obvious. Tracks like The Crossing bear that out, and will likely stand to remain bulletproof no matter what the era of play, much as Pink Floyd's music does. Yes, it's that good."

"This fantastically-talented Parisian trio makes haunting, riveting, and unforgettable music in a variety of styles that is, ultimately, a style all their own.
"Your Witness" is featured on the "Martyrs" soundtrack on Eskwad Records. The other two cuts are from an unnamed EP. Their other tracks, ("Sweat", "Sure thing (polymorphic remix)", and "Eden" ) can be found in the following and last section of the reviews.
"Witness" highlights austere acoustic/electric textures by guitarist Alex, with a very good vocal by Willie. The song is ghostly, atmospheric, and just lovely to listen to; the lyrics are wistful, the harmonies lush. It's fitting that this track is found on a soundtrack album, for the song itself could have been part of Pink Floyd's 1971 soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder's "La Vallee", more known as "Obscured by Clouds."
"Sure thing" is cocky and slightly atonal college/indie rocker that transitions into alternative/grunge with multitracked vocals. Add a digitally edited guitar solo and you have a modern rock song the Breeders would have been proud to perform.
"DR" is a bizarre mix of diametrically-opposed styles and genres. Starting with cool synthrock, the track evolves into a swaggering club mix with funky late 70's inspired vocals. The mix is weird but solid: electro with a funky groove. Later, processed guitars skate over heavy hip-hop beats then everything descends into experimental electronics, tape noise, and whacked-out editing. Talented avant-rock with something for everyone. Brilliant pieces of sound by a criminally-unknown band."

One of the key aspects of Pascal Laguier's film Martyrs is the soundtrack. The music ranges from creepy ambient to acoustic balladry, all of which adds an extra emotional depth to the film. The main theme is particularly effective as the soft melodies and contextual lyrics are a stark contrast to the film's hard imagery.

The persons responsible for this great work are Alex and Willie Cortez, who operate under the moniker of Seppuku Paradigm. Many are probably not familiar with the work of this duo but that is likely to change soon. The pair also created the soundtrack for Eden Log, which is screening along with Martyrs as part of the Midnight Madness section at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.

how do you review a soundtrack for a film you've never watched before? as a mercury rev fan, i'm pretty used to that since the rev have always had a cinematic approach to their music (who else records on 35mm?), but it's still hard trying (not) to connect the song to the film's narrative in a situation such as this. the film in question is pascal laugier's martyrs, the controversial horrorshow on child abuse premiered at the cannes film festival this year. it was scored by parisian duo willie and alex cortes, (otherwise known as seppuku paradigm) who composed the film's main theme "your witness". the song, taken on its own, is cold and pensive, deliberately atmospheric even to the point of emotional disengagement - in other words, "chill". but when considered in context of its filmic relation, the coldness becomes brutal and the distance unbearable, though in both ways beautifully executed. and if you thought that to be a tad too morbid for your liking, you might not want to know the duo's name is inspired by the seppuku (or harakiri) suicide of japanese author yukio mishima. enjoy!

The soundtrack is also excellent. It was done by the same group that handled the soundtrack for Martyrs (which was also at TIFF this year), and they've done a great job adding to the feel of the movie.

I've only got one word to say about the soundtrack;spectacular!Simply spectacular!Lifts the film to a whole new level.

Source:Eden Log review (Serial Master)

With its memorable soundtrack, claustrophobic atmosphere and bare-bones dialogue, Eden Log offers ample chills and much food for thought.

Source:Eden Log review (onderhont.com)

Another strong point of the film is the haunting soundtrack. Lots of grunting, atmospheric and dark ambient overtones and quite some distorted bits make for a lot of tension. The score for the film does a tremendous job of keeping the tension locked and even enhances the atmosphere coming from the images.

Source:Eden Log review (world of matmos)

Another great aspect of this film is the score by Seppuku Paradigm (aka Alex & Willie Cortes). The haunting, Vangelis-esque ambience it creates perfectly compliments the imagery, and is at the same time neither overly electronic nor symphonic.

Source:Eden Log review (De Stijl Music)

Another interesting facet of the film is original music by Seppuku Paradigm, a series of ambient electronic atmospheres, textures, and washes. It's a welcome break in the expected horror score genre.

About the soundtrack, the music is provided by a French group nammed Seppuku Paradigm which provides a thrilling atmospheric soundtrack. Music are full of angst, thrills but most of the time are especially used to "paint" the atmosphere of each part of the network Tolbiac is exploring. The result is great, sounding like you're no more on planet earth but somewhere else, in a unknown world. The music is a real subtitle of the numerous mysteries and secrets surrounding the Eden Log Network.
