Title: The Awakening
Type: Album
Label: Lime Records
These Brummies have built quite a name for themselves, having played
Bloodstock in recent years as well as raising funds for the Sophie
Lancaster Foundation. I’ve heard no shortage of praise about this band
and yet amazingly this is the first time I have actually heard so much
as a note from them. Upon seeing the cover, I have to wonder how they
came to kidnap Eddie; did they knock him out from behind, perhaps, and
did he put up much of a struggle? I mean, this cover couldn’t be any
more Maiden if the words Bruce and Dickenson were blazoned across it.
Thankfully
however this is no Iron Maiden carbon copy, and that’s clear from the
start as a ferocious scream leads in to some surprisingly modern guitar
riffs. Perhaps I was expecting this to take me back to the 1980’s
riding the Steel Panther hype yet again, but I was mistaken. Sure,
there is a classic backbone to the sound and you can practically hear
the creak of leather jackets and smell the musty, patched denim in the
background, but Beholder fuse that together with more current
influences. There are some killer melodies to be found here and some
genuine skill in the vehement drumming, while the guitars lead a
double-barrelled assault on the razor-sharp ‘Razorline (On the Edge of
Insanity).’
I
rather like the chorus on ‘The Heretic’ which is rich in atmosphere and
has the kind of warm yet booming vocal melody that reminds of Warrell
Dane. As smooth as his vocals come across here and on the heartfelt
‘Brave Shall Fall’ he can equally bark out with aggression toward the
end as the guitars gallop to the finish line. He definitely has that
meaty, old school approach down, though. The latter comprises guitar
solos that seem to melt into the melody, while lyrically I can’t help
get the feeling this is a bit of a salute to the troops out there
risking their lives for a pointless war, and to those who have lost
family to it.
‘KMA’
gives the ears a bit of a bashing with its high-speed thrashing; ‘Kiss
My Ass?’ ohh, so that’s what it stands for. Well, GFYS, if that’s your
game! ‘Born Into Pain’ is another blow to the head, and once again we
get those Warrell Dane histrionics. There’s a bit of a progressive
slant to this one as well, while ‘March Of The Damned’ marches with
intent, emitting a very modernistic vibe. This one is certainly worth a
listen; good to see Blighty is still pumping out real metal!

NEVER TAKE US DOWN - MAY 11THOn May 11th 2009 Beholder will be releasing a unique worldwide download single through Lime Records with all proceeds going to The Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
Sophie sadly died on August 24th 2007, following the horrific attack on
her and her partner Rob in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup, Lancashire on the 11th August. Sophie and Rob dressed in their unique way, expressing their individuality as creative artistic people.
Vocalist Simon Hall wrote the lyrics for the song "Never Take Us Down" after this horrific and senseless murder and when it was finally put to music and recorded it became apparent that the lyrics, and song itself, spoke volumes for the beliefs of so many who live their lives in an alternative culture.
From this point on the band then approached Sophie's immediate family and offered the song to them to get their approval. This they graciously did and from here on they looked at using this as a tool to get the message out to all those who need to hear.
Vocalist Simon Hall said.......
“On hearing the news of Sophie's murder it sent shock waves around not only my immediate friends and family, but more so to all those who choose to be part of an.... alternative lifestyle culture. From an early age my thoughts on stereo typical perceptions of how people should look, act and conform have been strong in the belief that we are free spirited individuals, and simply because we look a certain way - does not make us bad people............Unfortunately this is not the way society views this and therefore I had to put pen to paper”.
By doing this we Beholder hope to retain awareness of the fact that this, and many other attacks, are not simply crimes of unprovoked aggression - They are Hate Crimes. Let’s face it If this attack was to take place for a religious or ethnic reasoning then would it not be classed as a Hate Crime?
In Sylvia's words (Sophie's Mother) ......
"The thing that makes me most angry is that it is seen as an isolated incident, maybe the seriousness of what happened to Sophie is isolated, but attacks are far from isolated. Just because you follow a different.... culture you are targeted; you are seen as easy pickings."
We must not forget that Sophie's murder, as brutal and as unnecessary as it was, it is not an isolated incident. Thankfully these incidents rarely result in death, but they still remain, and therefore Beholder will do all we can to keep the awareness of such crimes until the Law recognises that these Hate Crimes must not be tolerated and must be eradicated.
With your support and the pledge of both Begolder and Lime Records, who are both donating ALL PROCEEDS from the sale of the single, we are hoping that "Never Take Us Down" will be a fitting tribute to a wonderful family and a worthy campaign.
Further to this Beholder will be headlining the “Sophie Lancaster Stage” at this years Bloodstock Open Air, which again is a stage kindly renamed by Bloodstock in her memory.

Beholder are happy to announce that we are now exclusively signed to Lime Records.
This partnership between ourselves and Lime will see the album "The Awakening" being release Worldwide on Aug 12th as both a download and CD format, and with the album sounding better than we could ever have imagined (even in it's infant stages), then we are positive its gonna Globally Kick Ass!
After weeks of negotiating we are delighted with Lime's forward thinking approach to the Music Industry and this was made clear when they offered to release "Never Take Us Down" (taken from the Unleash The Hell EP) - AT NO COST.
So on May 11th we will be releasing the track, in download format, and ALL PROCEEDS from sales will go to The Sophie Lancaster Foundation. We hope, in no small way, to help with the foundations raising of awareness towards the increasing violence faced by those who choose to live Alternative Lifestyle and in doing so cement the knowledge that these are Crimes Of Hate.
So these are exciting times in the Beholder camp and we thank Lime and look forward to the future.
