Current mood:  chipper
This band brings back the timeless sounds of rock and roll, and adds a distinct kick your ass feel to the mix.

The Hell & Backs.  These 4 fella's of fury, Gwildo, Dayv, JZ,and Brantula blast off in a revved up rockin'roll shakedown when they hit the stage.  Formed from the ashes of the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire (Kelowna) and from the scorched remains, they have been playing their own version of Rock and Roll ever since. From the Shambhala Music Festival to opening for SNFU, D.O.A.,The Deadcats, BC/DC plus headlining many of their own shows, and a sold out Halloween spooktackular 2 years running, to name a few. These Rowdies of Rock are well on their way to shaking up a town near you.

The Musicians Behind the Name

Josh (JZ) Zawaduk, playing guitar and lead vocalist, has an extensive history in the music industry, from the Czech Republic to touring around the U.S.A for 8 years, performing with such acts as Ani Difranco, Dan Bern, Pete Seeger, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Ramblin' Jack Elliot to name a few. Josh formed the punk/surf band Jimmyjack in San Francisco, after which he moved back to Kelowna to start a new band and start the independent record label CAZ recordings.

Brant (Brantula) Rattray, smokin' on the drums, started the music studio The Rubber Room in Vancouver in the 90's.  As an engineer and owner of the studio, he recorded almost every band that passed though the city. He played in such bands as The Insipids, The Torture Animals, and Deadline.

The bass player Gwilym (Gwildo) Taylor, the youngest member of The Hell & Backs, hails from Prince George. He played and recorded in the metal band Disdain and now free-lances as a recording engineer and professional jackass.

Dayv Anderson, an accomplished guitar player of 10 years, is the newest member of the band. He brings his technical shredding skills and catchy licks to round out the new sound of this rockin' band as these 4 fellas of fury head hellbent on the road to rock n roll ruin.

Current mood:  awake

It seems The Hell & Backs are always recording, well it is kinda true. It has been 3 years and 4 albums since the humble beginings of the band.

-Big Titties Black Sabbath (EP.as a 3 piece before Brantula)                       -Lucky 13 (13 song album w/ Brantula)                                                     -Whip It Out!                                                                                           -Outlaw Speedway

Plus there was a pre-version of Outlaw Speedway inhanced CD-Rom produced at Centre of Arts & Technologies with a mini documentary about the band and the process. about 150 were made.

With a change in lead guitar players in Sept. 2006, Dayv Anderson joined the band bringing his own brand of teched out southern rock-like solos and classic sounding licks, the Hell & Backs now venture more into the depths of pure rock n roll writing and surpassing the somewhat limited stylings of its rockabilly roots they klung to in their early beginings.

It's an exciting time for the band, recently hookin' up with master producer Kevin Kane (of Gapes of Wrath) in production of a new album with a new sound and a new direction of song writing. With all previous albums recorded in a matter of days the band has made the decision to spend the extra time and effort to make the Best Hell & Backs Album Yet. And with Kevin Kane at the helm of this hellacious voyage of Rock, ya know there's gonna be a great end result.

So stay tune for an exciting new year of The Hell & Backs!

What do you think we should call the new album? Let us know,

cheers, The Hell & Backs
