Read an article about us in The Lifestyle by Dr. Allison Carter or online at The Lifestyle Mental Fitness:

When Laura Thereza, founder of State of MindWater, Inc. began her quest to "produce a pure and pristine quality of water in an environmentally friendly bottle to advocate positive messages, such as 'Love', Compassion', 'Believe', 'Peace', 'Hope' and 'Faith', on the labels" she had not studied cognitive-behavioral therapy. Without even knowing it, but through projecting her own philosophy about, "enhancing our inner positive energy toward people and the environment surrounding us everyday," Laura was implementing sound psychological principles into everyday life.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has four cornerstones which guide its theory. Two of these four cornerstones state that 1) people create their own reality with the meanings they attach to events and 2) that thoughts, feelings and behaviors are reciprocal. In essence cognitive-behavioral theory believes as Laura seems to; that "our thoughts can change our world."

Laura's story is a positive example of how you too can utilize psychology in your everyday life to enhance your mental fitness. Laura grew-up in Brazil and on her way to school each day she would pass by a dilapidated elderly home. Although Laura's life took her away from her beloved country she never forgot about the condition of this elderly home or her desire to help the people living there. She used donations from business venture client's to send as much aid as she could, but still felt it wasn't enough. In Laura's words, "About five years ago, I did not get the funds I projected. As I looked at the bottled water I was drinking, I decided to write the word 'believe' on the bottle. This word of affirmation enriched my visualization and helped me stay focused. I kept that bottle with me everyday and wherever I went.Gradually, I began to believe that I could accomplish this project."

Using one of CBT's cornerstones to look at Laura's process, she effectively changed her thinking patterns, which in turn changed her feeling/belief and influenced her behavior. Each of these effects is reciprocal. You can not change your thoughts without your feelings being impacted; you can not change your behavior without your thoughts being impacted. Changing any one of these components will influence the others. Pretty powerful stuff considering the other CBT cornerstone presented in this article, that you create your own reality with the meanings you attach to the events in your life. If your thoughts are negative about an event or situation your feelings and behaviors will follow suit.

Laura didn't accomplish her goal overnight and neither did she 'believe' with the same affliction at every moment of her journey, but her water bottle message allowed her to challenge herself to keep her thoughts productive. This led Laura to the actions (behaviors) that allowed her to accomplish her goal. Imagine the feeling that must be associated with that accomplishment! "I have always believed that our mind and thoughts are powerful mediums to drive us to get where we want to go, and be where we want to be. ...now, I look at my bottled water knowing and feeling that my dream of rebuilding that elderly home in Brazil will be A DREAM COME TRUE."

Where in your life can you apply the theory of cognitive-behavioral psychology? Try it out.Think of a current problem you are experiencing. Use the worksheet on page three to explore how CBT works. Challenge yourself to apply this theory without having to write down the components. Become increasingly aware of how you are influencing your own moods and behaviors based upon the way you interpret others and the world around you. Utilizing this model in your life does not make life grander or take away the potential hurts and sorrows, but it does continually help you to realize the powerful influence you have over your own reality and the approach you take to coping with life's challenges. Embrace change. Challenge yourself. "Believe." And don't forget to drink plenty of water! You can visit www.stateofmindwater.com for more information on Laura's journey.

There was a great article about us in the June edition of Hollywood Weekly written by Jamie Latta. We feel she did a great job capturing our passion about our State of Mind Water:

"Pure, Drinkable Inspiration"

State of Mind water was created on one principle - Your thoughts can change the world. Laura Thereza founded and created this unique brand based on this simple and pure philosophy. Like many great ideas, State of Mind was sprung from the well of inspiration.

Laura Thereza, founder of State of Mind, found herself less than inspired by her life and knew she needed to turn a page. Her journey began with this honest request: "God, give me something challenging that will change my life." Shortly after, Laura took a trip to her homeland, Brazil, where she was haunted by the abominable conditions of a home for the elderly. The establishment had disintegrated into ruin and was in dire need of funds for basic renovations. Laura knew this was her first challenge and began working tirelessly to raise the ten thousand dollars needed to make the repairs. During this time she did one thing that would change her life; she wrote "Believe" on her water bottle everyday to remind herself that this goal was possible. In time, Laura's sacrifice, determination and perseverance paid off. She raised the money and the home received the  funding it so desperately needed.

Laura, bitten by the spirit of giving, knew that she had more to contribute and found herself once again asking for direction from the universe. It was not long before she woke from a sound sleep at 3 a.m. and received her next calling: Providing the world with positive thoughts, one bottle of water at a time. "Millions of people carry a bottle of water everyday. Why not carry something positive?" asked Thereza. State of Mind water was born from a moment of clarity, understanding that thoughts really can change the world. After all, it was the "believe" on her bottle that served as a beacon during her own moments of doubt.

Once again struck by inspiration, she was faced with more challenges. Beginning with, "How am I going to do this?" Like any overwhelming task, her journey began with a first step: Finding the water.

Her path led her down a road of education and then, frustration. Traveling as far as Alaska and as near as Orange County, Laura was running into obstacles. The more she learned about water, the more she understood she had to find the perfect source for State of Mind. What went into the bottle was equally as important as what went on the bottle. It had to be a pure as the thoughts it carried.

So began her quest to learn as much as possible about water in order to find the perfect source. There is much more to water than meets the eye. They might all look the same, but what's inside that bottle is what makes all the difference. Many waters contain harsh chemicals and impurities, which can ultimately cause damage to the body. Laura learned that water needs to be as close to a neutral pH level as possible. True neutral carries a pH level ranging from 7.0 to 7.5. Water with a higher pH level (high alkaline) is heavy in minerals, which can be very damaging to the system. Many detergents have high alkaline levels, which is great if one's trying to clean the carpets, but not so great if hydration is the goal. If the pH level is too low, then it becomes acidic. Either way, drinking water needs to be a close to neutral as possible, which is not always the case. A neutral pH level indicates balanced water. Imbalanced water can lead to a build-up of unwanted minerals in the body that can cause maladies such as kidney stones. She discovered that much of the water that is bottled is tap water distilled or purified through reverse osmosis, which strips the water of healthy minerals needed by the body. Minerals are then added back in, but unless they are natural, the minerals cannot be absorbed.

Laura also discovered a lot about how water is bottled. It's important that the bottle be a certain type of plastic or it's possible that chemicals can leach out of the plastic and into the water. After extensive research, it became apparent that the bottle had to be made of 1 Plastic (P.E.T. plastic) which has no leaching
characteristics. PET bottles are also easily recyclable, causing less damage to the environment.

The more research she did, the more unlikely it seemed she would find the right water for State of Mind. Laura spent well over a year researching and came pretty close to giving up when she received what appeared to be another wake-up call. On the verge of quitting, she turned on the TV and received a new message. Loud and clear on channel four, there it was, "If you have a dream, don't give up." That was just what she needed to give it one more try. Laura started another search and miraculously found a source that fit her every need.

A Google search led Laura to Mt. Olympus. This mountain, high above Salt Lake City Utah, just happened to be a source of pristine water that is protected by its rugged surroundings. To compliment the purity of her message, Laura finally found the perfect natural spring water 5,000 feet about sea level on federally protected land. There were no contaminants. The natural geological surroundings and lack of development on the mountain provided water that had a pH level of 7.1 and was naturally sweet and low in dissolved solids with high levels of oxygen (filtered through state of the art equipment). The water was as unsullied as the message and appeared to be a match made in heaven. When she contacted the company to inquire about bottling their water, their response was simple. "Well, I guess we could all use a little love and compassion." From that point on, State of Mind went from being a dream to being a reality. Laura Thereza's belief made bottling positive thoughts a reality.

State of Mind water reminds us that there is love and compassion all around us. The company backs its philosophy by donating 5 cents from every bottle sold to Drop in the Bucket (dropinthebucket.org), a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing clean drinking water to millions of people who live in sub-Sahara Africa. This is proof positive that State of Mind is not a trendy marketing ploy. It's not just the bottles offering compassion and love; it's a company and a founder with a soul, not just a bottom-line.

State of Mind, promoting positive messages such as Love and Compassion, is available at natural food stores, spas and yoga studios throughout Los Angeles and will soon be available at Whole Foods. For a complete list of vendors, visit stateofmindwater.com. Believe, Faith, Hope and Peace will soon be added to the affirmations to help promote positive thinking for a new world. This pristine water in an environmentally safe bottle offers more than hydration. It's pure drinkable inspiration that is not only good for the mind and body; it's good for the soul, reminding us all what is possible when we BELIEVE.

People of Passion Profile
Laura

I have always believed that our minds and thoughts are powerful mediums to drive us to get where we want to go, and be where we want to be. So now I carry words such as 'Love', 'Compassion' and'Believe' with me every day, and I have created a way for others to do so, as well! I started a bottled water company called State of Mind Water whose philosophy is about caring for, and embracing, the public's physical and mental health, as well as the well-being of our planet. On each water bottle label is a powerful word of affirmation, to see and touch throughout each day.

This company started from a little girl's dream to make a difference in people's lives. I am that little girl who grew up and attended a school in Brazil near a rundown elderly home. The conditions and unpleasant odors were things I could not erase from my mind. My thoughts and prayers since have been about one day making a difference in their lives.

The years following my departure from Brazil led me in many different directions. I worked hard and saved as much money as I could, but it was never enough. I finally ventured into a business where my clients helped with their generous contributions, making possible the purchase of new mattresses for every bed and the renovation of the unusable bathrooms and facilities at this elderly home. It was a great first step of improvement for their basic needs, but I knew it was only the beginning. About five years ago, realizing I still had not gotten the funds I was projecting, I looked at the bottled water I was drinking and I decided to write the word 'Believe' on it. This word of affirmation enriched my visualization and helped me stay focused. I kept that bottle with me everyday, wherever I went. Gradually, I began to believe that I could accomplish this project. What still amazes me is that the answer to my own obstacles had already been revealed right in front of me…it just took me a little while to truly see it. Now I offer from my heart these bottles of water with words such as 'Love' and 'Compassion' ('Believe', 'Peace', 'Hope' and 'Faith' in the near future). My desire is to continue to create a positive state of mind for myself. I believe it can make a difference to others.

I have researched for years, and traveled from local springs to Alaska to find the best quality of water. Finally, I was blessed to find a pristine source of water from a mountain spring located at 5,000 foot above sea level in a federally protective wilderness area in Utah. A company with the state-of-the-art filtering and bottling system, 'State of Mind Water' was born, and on each label is a word of affirmation. I'm hoping to make a difference in this world with my product and my experience, starting with one person, one day at a time. I believe that together we can change and improve the world we live in. After all, 'Our thoughts can change our world'. Now, I look at my bottled water knowing and feeling that my dream of rebuilding that elderly home in Brazil will be A DREAM COME TRUE. www.stateofmindwater.com
