Sneak Peek the new White Mystery Album

Are you wondering, "Is this a new White Mystery record bursting out?"  The answer is YES.

We recorded fourteen songs with Devin Davis at a steel factory here in Chicago and the release is planned for December 31, 2009 at the Double Door.  You can pre-order the record starting December 18 on a White Mystery website that will launch the same date.

The new record cover features your two favorite red heads at a sculpture park on the north side of Chicago.  We have fond memories of learning how to rollerblade there in the nineties and returned on Saturday, December 12 to deconstruct it with our eyes.  The White Mystery momma, photographer Diane Alexander White, shot us inside this little metal house shown here, and at an abandoned car wash in our neighborhood.

How do you like it?

White Mystery

When: Thu., July 16, 10 p.m. 2009
Phone: (312) 226-6300
Hard to believe it’s been almost seven years since a 17-year-old Miss Alex White announced her arrival on the Chicago garage-rock scene with a month of Fridays at the Hideout—backed by nothing but the primitive pounding of drummer Chris “Playboy” Saathoff, she stunned audiences with her skilled songwriting and soulful howl. Now 24, she has something of the wizened veteran about her, and functions as a sort of de facto elder to the thriving crop of young musicians emerging from her alma mater, Northside College Prep, which includes members of the Smith Westerns and the Stranger Waves. Her newest project, White Mystery, returns to the winning formula of her duo with Playboy and her previous two-piece, the Red Lights; this time her younger brother Francis plays drums, and his style is somewhere between Beat Happening’s Cro-Magnon rhythms and what you might hear from one of those kids at Guitar Center who always commandeers a display kit to see if he can sound like Keith Moon. They’ve been gigging a lot lately—last weekend they played at their mother’s photo exhibit, which commemorated the 30th anniversary of Comiskey Park’s Disco Demolition Night—and their debut seven-inch just came out on HoZac Records, perfectly capturing their gleeful (Billy) Childish-ness and swaggering Monks-y stomp. The Stranger Waves, the Pelts, and Poppets open. —Brian Costello

If you're a fan of stripped down garage rock, loud drums, and/or redheads, meet your perfect match. White Mystery is the two-piece brother/sister duo of Alex and Francis White. Alex is best known as the guitar rockin' front women of Miss Alex White and the Red Orchestra, but with her latest venture with brother Francis, she strips it down to a guitar and heavy-handed drum garage rock sound. The twosome put on an energetic show, and had one of the most killer tambourine and guitar rock outs I've ever seen recently when they appeared in ChicaGoGo (as evident in the photo above).
Also playing is noteworthy act, Stranger Waves, who were recently picked as the "Best Rock or Pop Act" by The Reader. The trio of 18-year-old rockers supposedly puts on one of the best and most rowdy local shows around, creating a racket of noise with two guitars and driving drums. I'm looking forward to finally checking them out live myself. The music will be gritty, loud, and it will make you bounce all around Hideout's floor.

White Mystery and Stranger Waves play The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, tomorrow night (May 23rd) at 9pm. Tickets are $8, and the show is 21+

"Snack Culture" live song by White Mystery on March 7, 2009. Video is courtesy of Union Rock Yards, a venue that tapes every show at their space. So smart! The set was in Logan Square shortly after the ChicaGoGo taping.
