Simeon Soul Charger was mentioned on Citizen Dick, a Cleveland/Chicago based music blog. Here's the link or read below. http://citizendick.org/2009/08/01/some-lazy-saturdays-are-bigger-than-others/We held back a little bit when we reviewed The Builders and the Butchers live show last week. Rob and I rolled in just a tiny bit late, but still in time to catch the tail end of Simeon Soul Charger’s set. You probably wouldn’t slap the “indie” label on the Akron-based band, but their blend of dramatic, metal-tinged chops and epic delivery translates really well live. We’ve got two tracks below, both of which are intricate and borderline operatic. The supplementary percussion breakdown in “Rockets” is particularly solid. We’ve said this before, but it’s fun to write about local bands that have talent. These dudes, Suede Brothers and The Modern Electric are certainly making Northeast Ohio proud at the moment. (That said, we’ve got to have a conference or something about how to name a band. Maybe there’s a good story behind it, but Simeon Soul Charger doesn’t quite work for me. The band would jump a level if the name was Killer Whale or something, right?)

SPOTLIGHT: Simeon Soul Charger
Every once in a while, a band comes seemingly out of nowhere and makes an immediate impact with their professionalism, talent and a knack for creating amazing music. Having been in existence for less than a year but already promoting a phenomenal EP, a tour schedule, and a hypnotic live show, Simeon Soul Charger is one of those bands.
Based out of Akron, Ohio, Simeon Soul Charger played their first show in September of 2008 with their EP release in April of 2009, backed by a full choir (not an easy feat for major label bands, let alone a newer independent group). They have already played multiple cities and states and will be playing in two Ohio festivals in July. In short, they have accomplished in a mere matter of months what many unsigned bands are proud to have accomplished over the course of several years.
Listening to their self-titled EP, it is hard to classify the band under any specific genre although a volume of influences shine brightly in certain songs or parts. It’s easy to hear the beginning of a track and think, “Oh, these guys sound like such-and-such band.” But thirty seconds into the song, something will change and you’ll be rethinking your previous determination. Wait another thirty seconds and you are bound to have another whole new consideration of their sound and style. However, the way the songs are arranged and written, these variations are done tastefully and in a way that’s very easy to listen to. Oftentimes, you will find a band with a plethora of influences and the talent to translate all those drastically different influences into their own music while eventually turning each song into a mushy, unorganized smattering of styles that only fit with jagged changes and abrupt transitions. Not the case with Simeon Soul Charger. While you might hear the influence of The Beatles, David Bowie, and System of a Down all in the same song, you’ll still feel like you’re listening to a well-arranged yet indescribably unique approach to modern rock. In addition, the usage of pianos and cello throughout the music lends layers and depth that helps to keep each song on an even keel with itself.
If you haven’t heard of Simeon Soul Charger up to this point, don’t feel bad. After all, the band has only been around for a matter of months. But you would be well advised to visit them online and see when they will be in your area because you’re sure to walk away with a new favorite unsigned band. Below is a list of upcoming performances. And songs from their EP (and then some) can also be heard on their MySpace. We encourage you to purchase the disc and give them your support. The music world will be better served by ensuring that bands like Simeon Soul Charger are here to stay.
