Kalan popped into the chat room on his official website yet again on Friday, July 24th. Read what went down below.

New Album Info

kalan: I think you guys are going to be blow away with the new music and direction.

kalan: Haven't thought about band stuff yet. But this isn't small music.....

kalan: It's bold. Like people will either like it or hate it I think

kalan: Haha... some of you might not like it. I love it though

kalan: I think it sounds super fresh. I have about 8 songs right now. recording them now and wanting to write a couple more

kalan: Writing with Tosha Dash (of the Candy Coated Killahs) a lot. We cowrote the majority of the songs so far

kalan: I'm still working on the record everyday. So its still taking shape

kalan: Yes... in the studio everyday. everyday goes... gym studio bed, gym studio bed, etc

kalan: Working with two great producer guys in Toronto. I'll let you know more about them sooooon

kalan: I wanna have a huge listening session sometime when the album is done. No promises. but would be fun. But that is just an idea so you can't hold me too it. But hopefully.

coocoo: Do you really get to decide all of this Kalan? isn't there something/ telling you what you can do?....

kalan: I decide whatever I want... hehe. Unless it's something bad... then I didn't decide.

kalan: So... tomorrow I'm finishing up recording a song called "Creep Around" with Tosha Dash. I think its my favourite at the moment; until I hate it in a couple weeks.

kalan: So far I've written 45 or so. We've recorded 4 almost done versions of songs.

kalan: New album doesn't have a ton of guitar. Definitely some though, just not rock.

Music Industry Opinions....

kalan: Merchandise is often where artists make most their money

kalan: These days any album actually bought... the label is happy with.

Does one (record) store hold more weight to a record company than another?
kalan: Nope. Sales are basically sales. They obviously direct their marketing to where you sell more. But no.

kalan:I think music is going toward sites online that just stream high quality music. and we'll never need to own music again

kalan: nope... single since March-ish. I like being single. Freeeeedom!

kalan: I quite like MuteMath

kalan: A little done with all the MJ coverage honestly.

kalan: hmm... new artists? Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is a guy from Calgary I love

kalan: I like Royal Wood

kalan: watching it (The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian) right now.

kalan: Cool... I'm sorta bored with my ipod right now. I need something new and exciting.

kalan: I just saw Our Lady Peace the other day. My friend is their tour manager... so I went to see them record some radio show. Was fun. Free beer.

kalan: I always sneak food in the bulk section.

kalan: Not a milk fan. (His answer to the age old question “Got milk?”)

kalan: Ya... I fought with the record company a lot re: the singles on the last album....

kalan: I won actually... well with Down in Heaven

kalan: least favourite song... maybe Destination. That was the labels favourite

kalan: I'm working on some wicked online content.

Song Update as of May 21st/09

"Finished writing ‘Shameless‘ with Kalan Porter tonight.  Excellent song.  Next up, Kalan and I will record a full demo of the song sometime over the next couple of weeks.  For now, in order to archive the composition, Kalan just sang it down live off the floor accompanied by my rag tag acoustic playing — song still sounded good!"

Mmmm K, so last Friday night Kalan posted a message on Twitter that he was chatting with his fans in the chatroom on his website. I got in there about half an hour into it but crackers11 logged most of it, and I will now proceed to post the longest "synopsis" known to man, but it was AWESOME! Kalan doesn't BS too much...wonder how he got through high school?

Chat Transcript – Things You Want to Know

— kalan: “I've got maybe 25 songs (for his new CD). But I'm not quite satisfied yet. Actually I've got like 35...but like maybe 6 or 7 that I love”

— Kalan doesn’t stick to a schedule when writing songs “It’s totally my own. This album will be ready when I feel it’s ready” and then poses the question “Wouldn't you rather it be good, than out tomorrow and suck?” & later in the chat Kalan admits that he “has no idea on a timeline”

— When asked about touring, Kalan said he had no idea, but “This album is gonna be so fun live tho” and that he thinks his “…Zeta (electric violin) will be back. Fits the record more”.

— “I'm gonna use the travel voucher to travel to write with a couple writers”

—Kalan doesn’t know if he will reunite with Ben Koybayashi or Ricky Tillo when he tours again “We'll have to see re Ricky and Ben. If they suit the music yes.” and that “this kinda music needs a big band. So it’s kinda go big or go home”

 — I got to ask if there was any possibility that Kalan’s new album would be released in the States. “Hopefully. Its the hardest market to break. But we’re taking a run at it”

—There’s no producer of this CD yet but Kalan is “working with some really cool people tho”

—Regarding his new sound: “I'm tryin to kinda reinvent my sound, my image, everything. So it might take longer than just a normal record” and “ its still me... just not the cupidesque idol little boy”

— “MJ/Prince are definitely influences in this new music” but “you guys will hear it tho and be like Prince WTF”

— Kalan’s opinion about the music industry : “The industry is in such flux. I wanna do something crazy with the new record, not follow the same old record release plan. But don't know yet”

Random Tidbits of Interesting-ness

— Kalan’s mom’s birthday was celebrated with a party thrown by Kalan’s dad. Unfortunately no one told Kalan “I found out about her 50th party after the fact. Wasn’t even invited. I think dad planned it sooo last minute. They forgot to tell me”

— Kalan doesn't like the new U2 album "No Line on the Horizon" that much

— The earring he has he got in Winnepeg, Manitoba

— Kalan is six feet tall
