a couple quick announcements:

firstly, i've taken the last few weeks and completely rebuilt the official slo.bor media website. as the label has grown over the last 7 years, matt borghi and i have felt the need to add more content, media and history. more will be added over the summer months so be sure to check back frequently.

finally, my new studio album "ENDING [light]" will be released in july. it's the first new studio album in 2 years!

here is the official blurb:

"we are very excited to announce the upcoming release of ENDING [light], jason.sloan's first full length studio album since the 2006 release hymnsfortheafterlife. ENDING [light] can be described as extremely minimal and a departure of sorts from sloan's recent textural guitar based works. this two CD set explores the sonic terrain of a biological / emergent, non-deterministic music through the use of custom software jason built using the processing scripting environment. the graphics and artwork for ENDING [light] were also produced from a similar generative system also created by jason with processing."

a sample from the album can be heard over at slo.bor media website in the media section.

thanks for the support over the years,

jason.sloan

Jason Sloan at The Gatherings Concert Series -
Commentary by Chuck van Zyl host of WXPN's Stars End

Full Review

I thought it would be cool to have two musicians from the nearby city of Baltimore play concerts at The Gatherings. It's really not that far away from Philadelphia (about 100 miles) and over the past ten years or so has produced some most interesting artists, personalities and events. Among the current crop is Jeffrey Koepper and Jason Sloan, both contemporaries - yet exploring totally different realms of sound. Plus, what with Koepper's triumphant opening set for Steve Roach on 05.19.07, the idea of having him back had been brewing for some time.

I'd had Jason Sloan play on STAR'S END a few times over the years, and knew him as an introspective soundscape artist. I've aired his CD "Still" on STAR'S END, as well as "A White Bleeding Silence". These works delve into two distinctly different areas of Ambient Music. His on-air performances captured both these moods, and more. Also, having played so well on STAR'S END, I knew Jason was capable of holding his own on a stage when it counted most.

For The Gatherings, I'd asked Jason to please put together a more active set, something with a bit of focus. His STAR'S END radio concerts were full of nuanced textures that gently led the listener across several soundscapes. I thought that The Gatherings concert audience would appreciate something that went well beyond atmosphere. What we got at The Gatherings was well beyond what I'd imagined. Opening with a dense cloud front of sound, Jason played his guitar through extensive processing. With its subtle changes in key this section drifted through the church sanctuary, filling the rafters with heavenly tones. As the chords echoed away an electronic percussion loop rose. This may have been the first time Jason has tried something like this; at least I'd never heard beats in his music before. It was wonderful; the rhythm kept building as Jason worked chords and effects over and under the pattern. Throughout the concert he would show innovations like this. Along with playing AM radio static into an open microphone, he also used his voice to harmonize with the layers of electronic pads he'd built up, a warm human element to an otherwise digital experience.

Sloan's set lasted about 40 minutes. In that brief time he said alot. His message was mainly about growth. Like the way his synthesized sounds and echoing tones filled up the sanctuary, his music fills the listener with a creative presence.

THE GATHERINGS

Gatherings are concerts for anyone interested in the many genres within the realms of Space, Ambient, Electronic and Contemplative music. The events provide a rare opportunity for the Spacemusic enthusiasts to mingle with each other and to experience this music performed live. Gatherings have featured performances over the years by a range of innovative artists; the techno-tribal journeys by Steve Roach, glurpy explorations by Robert Rich, multi-layered melodies from Jeff Pearce, floating contemplation of Stars of the Lid, the ambient chamber sound of Tim Story, the ethereal flutes of Coyote Oldman, and the world fusion of Steve Tibbetts and Choying Drolma. Legendary electronic music innovators such as Richard Pinhas, Kit Watkins, David Borden and Hans-Joachim Roedelius have graced The Gatherings, along with carefully chosen artists just starting to make their mark. The goal of the series is to bring interesting and challenging music to our community while providing a context for rewarding experiences for performer and listener alike. The Gatherings concerts are presented in the church sanctuary of St. Mary's Hamilton Village at 3916 Locust Walk, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, a serene space ideal for experiencing atmospheric sounds of spontaneous creation.

Kadman originated as the project of David Manchester, a singer/songwriter armed with the influences of contemporary artists such as Iron & Wine, Mark Kozelek and Nick Drake. the new track faded.forgotten [fragment] will be included on the upcoming hypnos records various artists compilation message from a subatomic world. this is an exclusive track created specifically for this release and will not appear anywhere else.

the audio for this track was generated from a found photograph discovered in a parking lot.
through the use of custom software, a sound palette was generated from the color algorithms of the image.
many cultures believe photos capture the energy of the subject. this process may be one way, literally or metaphorically, to release what may be contained.

message from a subatomic world, the sequel to sounds of a universe overheard, which was the first compilation project on hypnos since 1999's weightless, effortless compilation, will be released late 2007/early 2008.

We're proud to announce the debut release of Manitou - All Points North. We
first ran in Manitou several years ago while performing in Detroit. A Detroit-native,
Manitou creates a dense blend of industrial ambient music that's inspired
by Dearborn space folks like Windy and Carl, Tomorrowland, Stars of the Lid
and some of the other Kranky folks mixed with a sort of pastoral and consonant,
almost orchestral space that brings Mahler, and Richard Strauss' quieter symphonic
passages to mind.

Manitou's All Points North is sonic-emotional triptych that happens in and
around Detroit. With the sounds and inspirations of the city coursing through
the tracks, you can almost feel the cool wind blowing off the Detroit River,
and the brush of the steam tunnel's eerie vapor across your skin. Manitou has
crafted a deeply evocative release that uses sparse captures of dense air
to create an almost seasonal urban ambient music. This is a release that we're
very excited about, and has been a really strong impetus to get things into
high gear over here at Slo.Bor central again. This release comes in a one-of-a-kind
letterpress-printed sleeve that's been designed and printed by Matt
Borghi at The Hand Work Press.
