Emma was sorting out her stuff the other day and found some demo's that she was supposed to post out about a year ago (they were stamped and addressed. all she had to do was post them :-o). Anyway, her boyfriend took the initiative and posted them even though they were old demo's and we're not playing. What else was going to happen with them?

So, it turned out Organ thought it was pretty good. Here's the review

----------------------------

Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

DEMO OF THE WEEK
HOUSEHOLD – A rather chaotically good lo-fi alt-rock edgy post-punk indie guitar noise that comes laced with raw ambition and a creative imaginative attitude. It looked good from the off - inviting intriguing D.I.Y packaging that told us something a little extra had gone in to this demo. Wired guitar lines, abrasive vocals and hooks that don't so much invite you as snarl and joust and then grab you by the roots of your messed up hair and pull you right in to their stew of broken glass and snarling vocals. A broad Scottish singer, noisy bits pushing at the quiet bits (actually even the quiet bits are frazzled and snarling). Frenetic and discordant and abrasive and invasive – they have it under control though, this sounds like an intentional positive raw lo-fi mess. They're tight, they know what they're doing, they're right to be confident, they know they're good. Household are impressive and edgy and just a little disturbing - disturbing is good - drilling right into your heart (ready to pluck it out and put it in their pickle jar). They've got these analogue textures and paranoid loops and they're all wired and on fire – this is a frantically fine demo, they're from Glasgow – you need them and their self proclaimed no-wave punk rock. Another one for the bottom feeders....

Household, a four-piece "no-wave punk rock" band from Scotland, here unleash their second EP. First up, points for the presentation - CD and press info come presented in a fold-out envelope, with all the text hand-written. Somehow this left me pre-disposed to liking the band. I've no idea why - must be a foible of my brain. Anyway, on to the music.

On first listening, Aerogramme are the first point of comparison that spring to mind. Opener "The Mask" is a great song, part tightly-wound Bloc Party rhythms (admittedly at their most Radiohead-aping), with a broad Scottish lead vocal line which is a good thing for these ears. The song makes good use of light and shade with long instrumental passages, before exploding into a blistering coda.

Second track, "Mark #1", is a more conventional post-punk track, with a yelping/screaming vocal (coming across as not dissimilar to Garrison) with a beautiful breakdown around two minutes in which, not for the first time, makes me think this band must be a storming proposition live.

Final track "Brian" is the quickest out of the blocks of the three, again calling to mind Garrison, but with added synths which really lift the song.

This is a great little demo from a band which deserves wider exposure. It's very creative, well written, and with production and mixing clarity which would put many more illustrious bands to shame. Household are definitely a band to watch out for in the coming months.

Music teeming with youthful exuberance and brusque ennui in equal measure

Household are purveyors of discord in the best possible way. Pulverizing a warped adaptation of Refused's punk to come into brash, malformed pop, they make music teeming with youthful exuberance and brusque ennui in equal measure. With an abundance of deep-seated electronics floating around, '20/20's melodies betray its chopped guitars and hysterical screams. A brief tremor in the calm waters of disco-pop and depress-rock, Household are yet more cogent proof that central Scotland is capable of spewing forth something that, while ultimately listenable and accessible, is just a little deeper and a little less facile than the norm.

Is This Music? Review of Henry's Cellar 29/11/06

Doune/Glasgow ensemble Household are first to the stage, directing a throb of self-combusting noise at This Is Music's weeping mourners. Fusing brutal scuzz-fuzz riffs with incomprehensible snarling vocals, their vociferous elctro-punk is the rabid spawn of At The Drive In and Park Attack. Writhing and frothing to every discordant drum kick, this frenetic quartet suction the air from Henry's Jazz Cellar and spew it out as victorious bile.
