Ohio Issue 2 OPPOSED
A Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (OLCSB). The Cleveland APL’s mission is to foster compassion and end animal suffering. While much of our focus rests on bettering the lives of companion animals, we are advocates for the humane treatment of all animals. As a county humane society organized under Chapter 1717 of the Ohio Revised Code, we not only provide animal surrender, sheltering, sterilization, and adoption programs for the people and pets in our community, but we also enforce Ohio’s animal cruelty laws (ORC Chapter 959), under which farm animals are among those protected. Surprisingly, given our enforcement roles and investment in issues involving the welfare of animals, Ohio humane societies were NOT invited to join discussions about the need to create the OLCSB, its role, or its composition. Of the thirteen-member Board that Issue 2 proposes, only one seat was designated for a representative from a county humane society, or for that matter, from any Ohio animal advocacy affiliation. We support the concept of creating a regulatory Board that will serve to establish standards governing the care and welfare of livestock and poultry in Ohio. However, the Cleveland APL opposes Issue 2 on the grounds that this Board should NOT be created by constitutional amendment, because by doing so, Ohioans will be giving away their voice and ability to hold the Board accountable for their actions or inactions through their legislators. Accordingly, we do not believe this action will serve the best interests of the people or animals of Ohio. In conclusion, the Cleveland Animal Protective League opposes Issue 2 as proposed. BAN OHIO DOG AUCTIONS SUPPORT The Cleveland Animal Protective League supports efforts to ban dog auctions in the State of Ohio. Dog auctions allow the “puppy mill” industry, which is comprised of breeders who use inhumane practices to breed and house dogs, to prosper by acting as an intermediary in the sale of their breeding dogs and offspring. Their dogs are commonly kept in small cages, sometimes in horrific conditions, and denied the ability to express natural behaviors, such as the joy of running and experiencing affection. The Cleveland APL vigorously opposes any activity or practice that results in inhumane treatment of animals, so accordingly, we applaud efforts to ban dog auctions and regulate “puppy mill-type” breeding in the State of Ohio and across the United States. FIVE. FIVE DOLLAR. FIVE DOLLAR FELINES! … at the ....Cleveland.... APL on Saturday, September 19th
You heard correctly! For only $5.00 cat adopters can receive a generous helping of love and companionship from the Cleveland Animal Protective League! On Saturday September 19th, all cats ages 5 months and older will be available for only $5, and kittens under 5 months will have an adoption fee of only $20. You can also “super size” your kitten adoption by adding an adult companion cat (5 months and older) to mentor your kitten for no additional charge.
“It’s a fact that pets are good for your health,” said Executive Director Sharon Harvey. “They provide unconditional love and companionship. Research has shown that pets can help reduce stress and blood pressure in owners and increase longevity in people who’ve had heart attacks. In fact, a study conducted at the University of Minnesota mand published earlier this year concluded that cat owners were 40% less likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than people who didn’t have a cat.
“Based on this information, every adoption is win-win: a deserving cat gets a loving home and the adopter gets a friend for life who will improve his or her health and well-being—all for only five dollars. And remember, they also come with 100% of your daily recommended amount of love!” Harvey added.
All cats are spayed-neutered, tested for FeLV/FIV, have received age-appropriate vaccinations and treatment for worms and fleas, and come with a collar and an APL ID tag, a travel box, helpful species-specific animal care information, and a free initial veterinary exam.

This year Homeless Animals’ Day falls on August 15th and the people at the Cleveland Animal Protective League think it’s THE perfect day to make a difference in an animal’s life! It’s also a purr-fect opportunity to raise our community’s awareness about the wonderful cats who are waiting for homes at humane societies like the Cleveland APL. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study & Survey, 34% of pet cats wandered into their families’ lives as strays and 43% of pet cats are acquired “free” from an acquaintance or family member. Only 18% of pet cats come from animal shelters or humane societies. Many people think why get a cat or kitten from a humane society when I can get a beloved pet for free from a neighbor or from under my porch? Well here’s why. At the Cleveland APL, every cat and kitten has been checked by a vet, spayed or neutered, given their initial vaccines, treated for fleas and worms, and tested for feline leukemia and feline HIV, all of which will save an adopter nearly $300 in future care! So, because we don't think enough people know about the fantastic cats we have at the APL just waiting to find homes, for one day only, the Cleveland APL will match the price of the cat in your neighbor's backyard. On August 15th, Homeless Animal Day, the adoption fee will be waived for all of our fabulous felines who are one year old and up! Cats and kittens under one year of age will be available for an adoption fee of $25. “We felt this issue was so important, we were willing to do something dramatic to raise awareness – and this is dramatic as our average cost to care for a cat at the APL is over $200. We bring in hundreds of cats and kittens each week. We do not place any limits on how long they stay in our care. All healthy, friendly animals stay with us until we’ve found them a home, but we can only keep doing that if people adopt animals as fast as new animals come in. By adopting an animal, you not only help that life, but you help to save another. I just don’t think there’s a more fitting way to celebrate Homeless Animal Day!” said Cleveland APL Executive Director, Sharon Harvey. All of our adopters will go home with a free bag of Science Diet, a gift from our friends at La Bodega (while supplies last), and will be able to purchase potentially lifesaving microchip identification for their feline for only $10. As always, all cats will also come with a collar and APL ID tag, a travel box, helpful species-specific animal care information, and a free initial veterinary exam.

Cleveland APL “Unleashes the Love” for Homeless Animals This February
Do you find yourself craving some cuddly companionship over creamy candies? Are you considering passing up a three course dinner date for a frolic with a four-legged friend? If so, it sounds like you are ready to meet your perfect match this Valentine’s Day—the one with a warm heart and cold nose! The cuddly cupids at the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL) are hoping that people are ready to “Unleash the Love” this February and bring more animals home this year than ever before. Word around the Cleveland APL is that three super-secret Valentine’s are hiding amongst our animals and they have a special gift for their adopters!
The Cleveland APL’s goal is to adopt 250 animals between February 14th and 28th. A display of 250 leashes in the APL’s lobby area will represent the matchmaking goal. Every adopter will have the opportunity to unhook a leash from the display and “unleash the love” created by their adoption. “Our hope is to have no leashes left on February 28th—only a sign that says 250 families and animals found love and a new best friend this February,” says Sharon Harvey, Executive Director of the Cleveland APL.
Between Saturday February 14th and Sunday February 28th
· All adopters will receive a leash from the Unleash the Love display.
· Three super-secret Valentine’s will bring an extra gift with them to their new home.
· Microchips will be available for animals adopted during this time for only $10.
· A free bag of Hill’s Science Diet food (4 pounds for cats, 5 pounds for dogs).
· A free 2009 Cleveland APL Pet Calendar.
· Adoption fees for some of our special “Sweetheart” animals will be reduced 14%.
All animals are spayed-neutered, tested for heartworm or FeLV/FIV, have received age appropriate vaccinations and treatment of worms and fleas, and come with a collar and APL ID Tag, helpful species-specific animal care information, and a free initial veterinary exam. Cats/Kittens come with a travel box, and dogs/puppy adoptions include a leash. All adoptable animals can be seen at www.ClevelandAPL.org.
