Hello lovely people. This is Amy Clay. I've had something on my mind that I wanted to share with you regarding the cover of John Lennon's "Mother" that I sang and is currently up. The weekend Josh and I started recording was kind of magical. We were excited about our new home studio, but we also needed to get some demos up quickly so a promoter could hear something, as he was working under a deadline. So we decided on a couple of songs. We got everything set up and Josh said, "Would you like to warm up with a Beatles song?" (We had been talking about the Beatles songbook.) "Sure," I said. But the songbook was lost. Certainly everyone knows a Beatles song or two, but I am known to butcher lyrics to even my most favorite bands, as much as I love music. I don't understand why, but it's true. Suddenly, "Mother" popped into my head. Not exactly a Beatles song, but close. I had not thought of that song, or heard it, I don't believe, since I was 13 or 14 years old. During this time in my life, my parents were going through an ugly divorce, and I remember playing this tape over and over again, very quietly, wanting to sing along to the song, but feeling overwhelmed with guilt and confusion and intense pain and insecurity. I really, really love my mother. My father is another story, and I so wanted a "daddy" who was safe and loving. Anyway, none of this occurred to me so much on a cognitive level, but the words, albeit very simple to remember, came to me, as did the old feelings. I don't know why, but we recorded it, as a warm-up and a way to test the equipment. Oh, that's why we recorded it. And then we listened to it. Listening to yourself sing is hard to do. Listening to yourself regress into your 13 year old self singing and wailing is something else! We have these wonderful old Sansui speakers my Uncle Hank brought back from the Vietnam War and Josh turned it up pretty loud and played it several times. I sat on the sofa and listened and cried; it was very cathartic. When I hear it now, I am aware of its musical flaws. The wobbles, the pitch here and there, tempo. It's not perfect and we don't intend to "correct" it. It is a piece of my life, and I'm giving it to you. Amy Clay, age 13.

Mooki Laki Lai!
Thank you to everybody who has joined us in the birth of the Fool Saints through your listening and encouragement. For the most part, we have been playing in living rooms and out in only a few places, so these demos that we just put up truly mark the beginning of what we hope will become an ongoing musical collaboration that will satisfy our creative drives and please audiences. We recorded these songs in one weekend when we were on a roll and playing with our new recording equipment. That was so much fun and we have more songs on the way. So check back in a few days and I bet there will be more! Thanks for listening! Let us know what you think!
