Real Detroit Review of "Eight Styles to the Unholy"

FOUR OUT OF FOUR STARS

SikSik Nation
Eight Styles to the Unholy
Self-released

Surging bass lines and sinister-toned reverb guitars loom melodically over the blending of slamming live percussion with tight sequenced beats, as "Lady Lady" opens this strong statement of guttural, sweaty 'n' shaking rock. They take the dark and theatric feel of superfuzz, big-muff rock from grunge and the freewheeling, near-gothic overtures from early-'70s hard rock — dashed with spacey glam. Check the bass grooves of "Grave Blankets," the visceral percussive explosions of "Power Couples" or the stellar psychedelic guitar hooks of the epic "Oh So Hazy." It's earnest, often politicized, but passionate rock from this Ypsi-based power trio. — JEFF MILO

Current mood:  accomplished
Here is a few reviews for our Hamtramck Blowout performance on Thursday that we found.

To paraphrase one Mr. Matthew McConaughey: The best thing about Blowout is I keep getting older and it stays the same age...yes it does..."

There were many wonders to behold as I dove into the deep water of the real live in-Hamtramck chairs-and-milkcrates-in-reserved-spots-and-all Blowout on this seemingly schedule-agnostic Thursday. But before I pass out, er, rest, I gotta throw credit over the generational fence to SikSik Nation, who closed out the night at Kelly's Bar on Holbrook. See, not only did the bass-guitar-drums trio seamlessly and joyfully and aggressively and artfully bang together Nuggets/Back from the Grave-era with prime cuts Killing Joke (good call from Hamtown's own Steve Stupor) '80s atmosphere, but they also got the bartender to step out from her worrying and managing post and shake her ass and a tambourine thrown her way during the latter half of their floor-level set. To watch the same lady who gives you the stink-eye when you get cute with your order get down to SikSik's eye-level jamraveuppery amongst the art-school cuties and close personal friends of the band at 1 a.m. whilst locals and new fans look on and smile is truly one of the magic joys of Blowout.....
- Chris Handyside

Chris Handyside has already given credit to SikSik Nation for their set last night. I discovered them last year on Thursday night during Blowout, so this was our one year anniversary. The sad thing is, I hadn't seen them since. I know they did a few Lager shows but, for the most part, I think they stay out in the woods of Washtenaw County. These guys are so fucking tight, they made the crowd part of the band by passing out tambourines and maracas and, at times, channeled every rocker from Ian Astbury to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I dunno…nothing I say is going to give this band proper credit. They've got an LP coming out May 10 and an April 12 show at Lager with Speedy Greasy. I suggest you plan your spring around that information. - Jasper @ Webvomit dot Internet

Whalebomb: We went to Kelly's after for SikSik Nation. They were better than I had remembered from last year. I got to play a maraca for them during one of their songs. I was pumped. There were a lot of Polish men who had probably been sitting at that place years before Blowout started. And they seemed to like SikSik Nation as well. The band was full of energy, especially the bassist who was very successful getting most of the crowd clapping, and playing maracas and tambourines while they rocked. - post-rockish (Whalebomb)

Current mood:  excited

It has been 4 months since we hit the studio to start work on our first full length.  It has been one incredible adventure.  I have to say that the majority of things have gone quite smoothly with only a few minor bumps along the road.  If everything works as planed we will be putting the finishing touches on the final mixes this weekend.

As a band we have evolved through this process in attempt to create a unique style.  We have poured our hearts and souls into this record and are all extremely pleased with the outcome.

"Eight Styles to the Unholy" release date in May 08 (working on finalizing the details of a cd release show)

new song on myspace in about three to four weeks!

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of shows lately but we have been in the studio with the awesome Mr. Jim Roll, finishing up our first full length. We are knocking back the last of the vocals, then theres mixing/mastering and pressing. I think we are looking at a late march early April release!

We are returning to Detroit the 12th of April, not to mention blowout march 6th @ Kelly's Bar

Not the best review we were hoping for but at least its a writeup. Even simplistic press is press we can use.

Ann Arbor's SikSik Nation recorded this four-song EP with Jim Diamond, and it sounds like a perfect match. SikSik Nation's straight-forward, retro-tinged, slightly dark rock are best complemented by Diamond's dirty/plain approach. No frills, no huge thrills, but a solid effort. - DM
