æther's sound change ignites new release

The following interview was conducted by Mollie Wells with æther's very own Paul Carney and originally appeared in uweekly.com magazine, published on February 21st, 2007, in issue 487.

There tend to be checkered, difficult pasts behind most bands worth mentioning. Pulp, for instance, took some 12 years to do much of anything. New Order only emerged after Ian Curtis' tragic suicide called it quits for Joy Division. The Brian Jonestown Massacre...well, if you've seen "Dig," you know what happened to them.

But from the struggle comes a spark, and Aether is a true testament to the ignition. Formed in 2002, the local ambient rockers have been through the sort of line-up changes and musical crossroads (or stalemates, for that matter) that end even the most committed bands. But here they are, persevering like a sweet phoenix rising, with a new release, "Aethersound," and a whole new sound. From the ash, ladies and gentlemen, we give you Aether. UWeekly spoke to guitarist Paul Carney.

MW: Tell me about the new album.

PC:  "Aethersound" is a first in several ways. It is our first full length, our first with vocals, and our first in what we consider the indietronica genre: indie-rock and electronica with shoegazer overtones. We no longer define ourselves as post-rock.

MW:  How does this record differ from your other releases? Do you think it'll open you up to new audiences?

PC:  By the time of our sophomore EP, "Apart", we were intentionally writing shorter and faster songs to differentiate ourselves from the typical post-rock format. Plus, we were introducing spoken, effect-heavy vocals as texture instead of remaining entirely instrumental. The new release is a natural extension of that progression. I think it encompasses what we have been trying to achieve during the band's history, hence the simple title. Critics and fans so far seem to really dig it.

"Aethersound" is definitely more accessible to a broader audience than our previous recordings, and we think it will appeal to fans that have our previous EPs. The sensibilities that guided us in the past are inside these songs. It is gutsy without losing control.

MW:  You're as-of-yet unsigned, right? Is that a conscious decision?

PC:  Aether is unsigned. We have put together a wish list of labels that we will be soliciting over the next few months. We know we need to have certain things in place before approaching a label to give them a good enough reason to take us on as a risk. We're very realistic, and understand that Aether has to independently achieve a level of success that warrants a label's attention. Essentially, we need to achieve the goals that most people assume a label would do for you. What have you found to be some of the benefits and challenges of remaining unsigned?

Being unsigned, you have to take action for yourself and eliminate wishful thinking because it does nothing. If we want it, we have to figure out how to do it, not pretend someone else is going to do it for us. That isn't a negative perspective in my opinion; just a reality that has to be faced if you want to be successful. So we build relationships and network with people who can help us, but we're the drivers.

MW:  Do you plan to eventually branch out beyond the Midwest?

PC:  We've sold our music across the country and around the world, thanks to the internet. Online distribution and internet radio in particular have played a huge part in getting our music to people who otherwise would never have heard of us. The internet is a powerful vehicle to make music fans aware of you, and because of it we've sold music and have fans in Europe and Asia; especially the UK, Spain, Germany, and Japan. Each of those countries also has online radio stations and podcasts that play our music in regular rotation, which is great to maintain a constant level of exposure. But all of these networks came about through a grass-roots effort on our part, no help or guidance. If you want it bad enough, your hard work will make it happen eventually.

we're very pleased to annouce that aether has begun collaboration with two independent filmmakers/videographers.  not only keen eyed, but interesting conversationalists loaded with intriguing ideas, liv gjestvang and scott dewitt are documenting live performances and designing new (and i'll add improved) video loops for future shows.

check out the links below to see some of their footage from the february '06 skully's show in columbus.  thanks to liv and scott for the stellar camera work!

many thanks also to liv's friend, julie applegate, for some nice editing with some of the footage.

julie's video for milk can be found on her blog here: milk, and scott's visual tour de force, here: new sound, apart, and hours

on sunday, december 18, 2005, æther performed for a live radio broadcast at the CD101.1 FM big room in downtown columbus.  the alternative rock radio station is a nationally recognized station and continues to be the source for the best in new music.

the studio space known as the big room has seen the likes of many a well known rock music group, be they independent or major.  it was a great experience to be counted among the lucky.

if you missed the broadcast, or want to hear it again, the songs played live are available below.  the digital files were created using a taped recording from a home stereo.

what you would have heard over the radio:

after a kind introduction by cd101’s very own, andyman, we started the set off with the beat heavy song, hours, then moved on to a more electronica-steeped number called, deep dive, and ended with the ever-so-texture-laden tune, milk.

some great pictures of the band by one hristina panovska can be seen here: in the big room, outside, and au lamp post.

much thanks goes to andyman and the CD101 staff who put the event together and kept it running.
