We entered this MTV contest originally through OurStage (which is an unbiased, fan-driven website designed to help up and coming musicians) for MTV’s “Bay Area Breakout Band” and ended up being #1. All bands that enter the contest get an equally fair shot on Ourstage: two of the entered contestants will appear and the voter has to listen to thirty seconds of each band. Once it got into the hands of MTV, one could sit there and vote until the cows came home. If some people are voting once and others are maximizing their votes per day, how is there any objective measure of the actual, individual votes per band?

When they recorded us they asked us to do an acoustic performance. In retrospect, we would have declined this request. It's cool to see a famous band "unplugged" but for an up and coming, heavy-driven rock band, it didn't really make sense. For those of you who know us, it wasn't a good representation of us whatsoever. In addition, they cut off the end of the song. We asked if we could have the same live studio performance (that we spent a lot of time and energy on) that the other two bands had on the voting page but we were told it was being shown on MTV2. We also asked if they could rotate each band on the actual MTV2 site to be fair but they featured the same band on the homepage the entire duration of the voting process.

The MTV2 contest rules said that we would be contacted twice in any 24 hour period via a phone call and/or email where they wouldn't leave a message. If we didn't answer then they would go on to the next contestant. We had our phones on us and our Crackberries open for an email. We couldn't find anything via the web through MTV. Most friends watching it in the Bay Area (as we are on tour) said that that they still didn't see who won. Yesterday, one person told us that it was only aired in the Bay Area and it was extremely brief. In turn, we found only through the band's
Myspace page that they were the winners...congrats to them!

We are still very happy that we initially were voted the #1 spot in terms of the "Bay Area Breakout Band" when the voting was quite fair and legitimate and we had some great exposure. All bands are really good at what they do musically but all VERY different...like apples and oranges.

I don't watch TV and haven't really watched MTV or MTV2 in years. After watching MTV2 a few times to check out the deal and see our video, it became very apparent that this isn't really who we are...it's not what we really identify with or what we are personally inspired by musically or as a band. Most of our fans and friends watched it just to see us on there as they wouldn't normally be tuning in. Nonetheless, it made it that much cooler and rare for a band like us to be featured on MTV2. It's nothing that's better or worse, just very different.

Regardless, thank you all so much for voting and we feel very grateful to have the initial voting of #1 Bay Area Breakout Band. We will continue to follow our dreams and stay true to our hearts. We are working endlessly as always, fueled by the belief in our music and to spread the energy and good intention to people across the world.

xoxo,

The New Up

What an incredible time we had in Brooklyn! Thanks to all of our friends and family who came out to our show, and to Jenn and Doug for hosting. You guys rock.

We're driving west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (some beautiful scenery along the way) en route to Youngstown, OH to play Cedar's Lounge tonight, Sept. 6. Should be a fun night - Cedar's is the spot in town, where some of the coolest rock acts have played, and it's the holiday weekend! The show will start around 10pm. If you find yourself in the Youngstown area, then drop in.

On Monday, Sept. 7 we play Now That's Class in Cleveland. another rock hot spot with a rep for hosting good underground acts, and a wide selection of beers. The show kicks off at 9pm. See you there!

We then head to Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis before making our way back to the West Coast. Check out MySpace calendar for the details...

Due to an unforseen situation with the venue, our C'ville show has been moved to Rapture (303 E. Main Street). No cover! So if you live in Charlottesville, no excuses! The New Up hits at 11pm, so drop in and rock out with us. It's our guitarist Noah's hometown show, and the 11th show of our month-long U.S. tour. See you there! Or at another stop on the tour; check our MySpace calendar for details.

You can also check out some of the video footage that was shot by the MTV crew in July. The MTV2.com video clip currently shows an acoustic performance of "Just Because" by Emily, Noah and Hawk at the Pleasure Pad. Additional video of the entire band performing at Ex'pression studios, as well as interview footage, will be available as well.
Look for The New Up video on the MTV2 channel from August 17-28, airing throughout the day. Video clips will also be available in the SF Bay Area on Comcast On Demand starting this week. We'll post the video on thenewup.com as well on our MySpace, Facebook and OurStage pages.
HELP SPREAD THE LOVE
We would truly be grateful if you could take a moment to forward this to your friends, to encourage them to vote for The New Up, as this competition is priceless exposure for us, and to let them know about our shows. It means a lot to us to have friendly faces in the crowd, and to meet new fans while connecting with friends and family while we're on the road.
