November, 2008
Dear Friend of the Library,
This past year has seen many changes and a lot of growth at the Gowanda Free Library. We have been striving to offer the best to our local community with improvements regarding the following areas:
Our book, audiobook, and video collection This past year our librarian has put in a lot of focus on updating in particular the children and young adult collections and videos. For children and young adults to become productive and educated adults it is critical that the materials we provide them are updated with the latest information. However, quality books for youth are both expensive and become outdated very rapidly.
New computers New computers have been ordered and have been installed via the Gates Online Opportunity Online grant for public use computers and more are on the way next year. However the grant requires a matching contribution from the library (it was $650 this year and in 2009 will be $1300). More and more patrons are coming into the library seeking computers that accept their storage devices such as USB flash drives and MP3 players and have the latest software. We are doing our best to purchase the best computers with the grant money but we still need your help to meet our matching funds.
Programs The Gowanda Free Library has been expanding its programming for all ages. This past year we have offered artistic classes for adults and teens, educational programs for teens and adults including information on how to improve your credit score and Japanese classes, video game programs for the children and teens, and story times for young children. We are still seeking ways to offer more to the community.
Being a good neighbor Besides offering quality materials and programs to the community, the Gowanda Free Library recognizes the importance of being a good neighbor in the community. Recently, we have removed several trees on our property that had become damaged by weather and may have been dangerous. Additionally we participate, with the help of local volunteers and donations from local businesses and families, in events such as the Harvest Festival, Pioneer Days, and Hollywood Happening.
In addition to the above, we have many goals for the coming year. We hope that by next year we can at last update our records system to a computerized one. You may have seen the automated systems of other libraries such as Collins (part of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system, which is fully automated) and Olean (part of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library system, whose libraries are becoming automated one-by-one).
By becoming automated, our services will become vastly improved. Our connection with other automated libraries in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus system will make it easier than ever to borrow books from outside of our own library for our local community which drastically increases the size of the collection available to you. Also, automation will better help the library in keeping track of materials loaned, and statistics we need to submit to the state—meaning our employees can focus more ..ing you and hosting programs instead of number-crunching. However, becoming automated will take a lot of work including bar-coding each and every item in the collection, linking those codes to computer records, and creating records if they do not already exist. We will require receipt printers, at least one new staff computer, and barcode scanners. It is estimated that this will cost at least $7000.
We hope that you will consider making a contribution to your local library to help us continue to make improvements and provide quality services to you and the rest of the community.
Sincerely, The Gowanda Free Library Board of Trustees
