Good afternoon everyone. How are you?

Sorry we haven't spoken for a while, your Winter Olympics have been away at Butlins (ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas you understand, we didn't just go for the crazy golf and go karts). It strikes me that we haven't yet said thank you to the hordes of you who came out and supported the scene at the Highbury Garage last weekend. It was a brilliant, brilliant night (after a pretty sh*tty week truth be told) and its greatness was all down to you lot. Thank you, we really appreciate you coming out and partying with us.

For those of you that couldn't be there, you missed lots of this:

plenty of this:

and, inevitably, massive amounts of this:

this resulted in some of this:

and, perhaps more unusually, some of this:

(all pictures come courtesy of our pals at Bangers & Mash - you probably picked up on that, right?)

The good news for everyone concerned is that there will be one last chance to dance this year when The Winter Olympics throw their second annual Office Rock Christmas Party. We'll be celebrating the birthdays of both Nick Dutton and Jesus with mulled wine, mince pies and ties around our head. Why not gather up your friends from work and join us?

Glasses will be smashed and arses will be faxed on Tuesday 22nd December at our spiritual home: The Windmill in Brixton (22 Blenheim Gardens, London, SW2 5BZ) on TUESDAY 22ND OF DECEMBER 2009 from eight o'clock. See you there then?

How to get there:

The nearest tube is Brixton on the Victoria line, turn left out of the station, then:

Walking: It's about 7 minutes walk from the tube, walk up Brixton Hill (the one with the Fridge at the bottom of it) and turn right into Blenheim Gardens (there's a Co-op Funeral Services and a traffic light at the end of the street).

Buses from Brixton: If you don't fancy the exercise there are lots of buses that run up the hill (mostly from the bus stop outside Woolworths and KFC after you come out of the tube station) Blenheim Gardens is the 3rd stop from Brixton and the following buses will transport you in approx 2-3 mins: 45, 59, 109, 118, 159, 250 and 333.

Buses from Croydon: The 109 and 250 stop at the bottom of Blenheim Gardens, just past the George IV pub and directly outside the NISA minimart (if you're going past will you pick us up some scotch eggs?)

Have a great week.

Incoming flyer for our SATURDAY NIGHT MEGA RAVE at the Garage on November the 28th. It's so obviously going to be our best ever gig. You really ought to come.

Evening everyone, how are you?

First off, thanks to all the brave ravers who helped us rip the roof off the 333 Mother Bar last week. Those of you that were there will no doubt vouch for the fact that one Wednesday night with The Winter Olympics is pretty much equal to a month of Saturdays with most bands. (Sorry, now imagining what a month with the band The Saturdays might be like. Fairly messy I'm guessing.)

This is good news because next WEDNESDAY THE 4TH OF NOVEMBER (remember, remember the 4th of November) your TWOS will be letting off the fireworks early (nothing new there) at THE BUFFALO BAR beneath The Famous Cock Tavern, right outside Highbury and Islington tube in London. You should totally come.

We're on properly early (half eight on the button) so you can leave work, get drinks, rock out and safely be home in time for Newsnight, no problem. Not that we'd recommend leaving early, we're supporting two ACTUALLY GREAT bands: the epically spectral (sound like Slowdive. Brilliant!) Daniel Land and the Modern Painters and the majesterially motorik Eat Lights Become Lights. The night's being put on by our great new mates, doing-things-properly promoters Goo Nite. And seeing as how it's Goo Nite (Goo, Goo, Goo - talkin' 'bout Goo) our hastily put together flyer looks a bit like this:

Goo Nite. Good times.

See you there, then (email us if you need any more info).

Lots of love

Hi everyone, how are you?

It's Wagstaff here watching the football with some hobnobs, while Martin is off hobnobbing with some footballers (he's at Wembley with his mate Becks, I'm here on the sofa with a Becks or two of my own).

Thanks to the Wilmington Army who came out to see us in Exmouth Market last Friday (and to the bartender and the bartender's friends) we really appreciate the support. If you couldn't make it, or if you liked it so much that you want to do it all over again, your next Winter Olympics show is this time next week - Wednesday the 21st of October at 333 Mother (333 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LE) with support from Beat the City and Le Sherifs plus a massive mid-week mega rave with our great mate Nik YellowBlack until three in the morning afterwards. It's my birthday party too (32, cheers!) so there's really no excuse for not coming out clubbing in the week.

The band are on at about half past nine and it's FREE ENTRY if you sign up to the promoter's mailing list over at www.myspace.com/yellowblackclub and turn up before 9pm. It's four quid if you don't. A poster for our yellow and black attack is below.

See you there then.

Cheers

Current mood:  strong
Evening everyone, how are you?

It's Wagstaff here, just back from the gym. I try and go when I can (cheers, thanks for noticing) 'cause no one really wants to see The Winter Olympics featuring Meatloaf (except maybe me) but dear sweet lord it's awful down at the LA Shitness.

Several thoughts crossed my mind as the treadmill's hard yards inched past. Some of them are even printable.

one) As greetings go, "have a great work-out" is something of an oxymoron, and puts far too much expectation on your twenty pathetic sweaty minutes of moaning. How about something more realistic like, "Hope you don't die," or, "Glad you've stopped bleeding."

two) You can listen to Kiss FM for as long as you like. The never play any KISS.

three) No matter how much you run you never catch up with that pretty girl two yards in front of you.

four) Which makes a trip on the treadmill a bit like being in The Winter Olympics. You strip yourself down as bare as you dare, stick yourself in a noisy hot room full of attractive young people who think you look ridiculous, get your head down and just run, run, run, run. And sweat, sweat, sweat, sweat, sweat. You don't necessarily go very fast, or get very far, but you know you can never ever quit. When you're a kid you run because you just love it. Now you know you'll die if you stop.

five) LA Fitness doesn't seem to find my 'Satan's Cock' t-shirt quite as fashionable as I do.

six) Indeed, the t-shirts people wear to the gym are terrible. I sort of thought it would be where good merch goes to die. I hoped the La Fatness might be a happy hunting ground for fat guys in threadbare Swervedriver shorts, or a middle-young legal assistant in her ex's Pop Will Eat Itself top, but no, nothing. A smattering of H & M made-up-American-college-town sweats, an ironic Guns 'n' Roses Tee, two hockey club stag-night polo shirts with HILARIOUS nob-based nicknames on the back, and an Al Pacino football top (yick). And no Ned's.

seven) Spotting someone wearing a TWO shirt at the gym would make me (nearly) as happy as that big festival slot we keep not getting offered. I guess we're a little closer to the first of those, at least, after the big merch giveaway at The Windmill last Friday. By my reckoning there should be fifteen more (inconsistently sized) shirts heading for yoga classes and beds in South London this week. The thought of this makes me very happy (and not entirely in a weird way).

eight) If you weren't there for the Windmill gig you missed an AMAZING night. My favourite bit (apart from meeting all of you) was when the power went off halfway through Probe because we were playing and singing so punishingly loudly. Apparently homes within half a mile of the Windmill couldn't make a cup of tea or get telly back until the next morning. Sorry everyone (ha! we're not sorry at all!) For those of you who couldn't make it down, I'll post some video and audio later in the week. If anyone has any photos or anything, send them through to us here at thewinterolympicsband@..googlemail.com. Anything good will win you a prize...

nine) The Winter Olympics return to live action with a STRAIGHT-AFTER-WORK, FRIDAY-NIGHT-DREAM-OF-A-BOOKING show on Friday 9 October at the entirely excellent Wilmington Arms (69 Roseberry Avenue, Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4RL). You should totally come because (a) the night is put on by our great new mates 'Pop Noodle'. (b) there are three other great bands on: Cha-Cha, Ja-Ja Wunderbar and a Child Rasputin (c) we're on at a brilliantly early eight thirty, really near your work and anyone wearing clothes that say 'straight from the office' gets a free drink and some TWO merch - office rock! (d) all of the above. See you there then.

ten) here's a flyer:

Speak to you soon sports fans.

Hello everyone, how are you?

Just a quick word to say two things:

One) Thanks to all of you who came down to party with us in Brixton last Friday. It was an AMAZING night. My favourite bit (apart from meeting all of you - how are you getting on with your new t-shirts?) was when the power went off halfway through Probe because we were playing and singing so punishingly loudly. For those of you who couldn't make it down, I'll post some video and audio later in the week. If anyone has any photos or anything, send them through to us here at thewinterolympicsband@googlemail.com. Anything good will win you a prize...

Two) The Winter Olympics return to live action with a STRAIGHT-AFTER-WORK-FRIDAY-NIGHT-DREAM-OF-A-BOOKING show on Friday 9 October at the entirely excellent Wilmington Arms (69 Roseberry Avenue, Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4RL). You should totally come because (a) the night is put on by our great new mates 'Pop Noodle'. A hastily knocked together flyer is attached, please bring it with you for cheapness.

Hope you have a good week.

Good evening everyone how are you?

It’s Wagstaff at the controls for your weekly* Winter Olympics’ blog, which means all the shaky video, wistful rock reminiscing and Conference level indie-name-dropping you’ve come to expect from us over the last few months. At the bottom of the message I will beg you to come to our gig at The Brixton Windmill this Friday (25 September) you can jump straight to that bit if you’d like.

So, we've been on holiday for the week. What did we get up to? Getting healed in a field mainly. Keyboard Jimmy Mitch, rock manager Jimmy Ketch and me, along with our great mates Huntspill (and to a lesser extent Okkervil) River went to the wonderful End of the Road festival in Larmer Tree Gardens. Great friends, music and outdoors? Check. Hot weather, cider and young people? Yep. Slayer overlooked as headliners in favour of the poxy Fleet Foxes? Well, you can 't have everything can you?

Look, here's the amazing time we had:

The charm offensive to get EOTR to book us for next year starts here. We might have to tone down the rave-Whitesnake elements of the act a bit, but we're keen to please, and great sets from (among others)  Efterklang, The Acorn and The Hold Steady proved that the place is ready to party.

Winningly, we had the great pleasure of saying hi to the Hold Steady at the festival. They very nicely signed all our shit and accepted our apologies for 'Just Another Sunday'. Better yet, it turns out that hard-grafting Winter Olympics' Mr ten percent Jimmy Ketch' is going to be dee-jaying when Franz Nicolay from the band drops in and plays at the Windmill next month. He is VERY excited about this. (James, not Franz, that is). JK will, of course, also be behind the decks when The Winter Olympics play at the Windmill this Friday night. Expect an all night Guns n Roses, Stone Roses, Rage Against the Machine disco. See you there then.

Hmmmm, I seem to have got to the bit where I remind you about the Windmill show a bit too early. Here then is the rest of the week's rock news that I was going to ramble through (with accompanying indie anecdotes) in precis form....

1) Pavement reform. Keyboard Jimmy Mitch talked us into going to one of Pavement's first UK shows (he's always right). Their mad drummer gave us a carrot outside the gig as 'special vege-merch'. I kept it for over five years (dirty, I know, sorry). At Pavement's last ever show, sometimes Winter Olympics bassist John Astbury wore a jumper with a pattern that went 'all-the-way-round'. Good times, good times.

2) Sugababes split. So ex-Sugababe Keisha is 24 years old? I seem to remember being sent to see them  in 2001 or 2002? and writing  that Sugababes were definitely better than Starsailor (8 out of 10, very good). She must have been 16. I now feel 102. Yick.

3) TWO go and see ex-Napalm Death noisenik Justin Broadrick in concert. The  PA didn't like his racket, but we did. Hey, did I ever tell you about the time I got my nose broken at a Napalm Death show in 1842? (true, still gives me trouble). What about the time I had a battered burger with their bassist in Birmingham (true, and that still gives me trouble too). What's that? Be quiet old man? Hrmph.

4) TWO go and see The Lemonheads, they have clearly practiced and aren't rubbish. Hey, did I ever tell you about me, Evan Dando, MC Skat Cat and that big tray of couscous backstage  at Reading festival in 1664? Wait! Come back!

5) TWO play the Windmill in Brixton on Friday night. Please come. Please. There's free merch (shirts and shit, not carrots) for any of you that do come along.

6) Oh come on, it'll be amazing.

7) Night.

AWOx

........................
Last weekend your Winter Olympics waved a tearful farewell to the Office of Rock, when we finally left our Streatham studio after six long months of graft. Not that we left because our record was finished (as if! Mixing next week…) rather, we’ve taken so long about it, making it so incredibly amazing, that the lease on the pub upstairs from the studio has expired and it’s going to be turned into flats and a flouncy wine bar.....
.. ..
You’d think it would be pretty hard for any pub that had the Winter Olympics living underneath it to go out of business, but somehow that’s what’s happened. Since we started work there, it’s been a metal pub, an Irish pub, an African bar and barbecue, and a metal pub again. There have been six landlords in as many months. Us, a bloke who looks exactly like him off Shameless, and a slightly yeasty smell have been the only real constants. ....
.. ..
For all that, we’ll really miss the ....Bedford.. ..Park..... It’s not the sort of place people normally get sentimental about: the beer garden doubled as a crack den, a large Irish man sometimes slept beneath the stairs, a month or so ago someone walked in and stole the quiz machine in the middle of the day. But you know, we’ve been made to feel really welcome there. Occasionally a new owner would wonder what we were doing down in the cellar, (maturing like a fine wine, of course) usually they'd just smile and bring Guinness.....
.. ..
As such, The Winter Olympics would like to raise a large dirty glass to all the great new mates who've put us up and put up with us this year: Chris (much missed) Mel (a little bit spicy please) Damon and Amy, Coke from Virus, Big Mac (we’re coming back for those tattoos) and even, while we’re at it, Mad Frank and that terrible band who murder Psychokiller every Wednesday night. Cheers!....
.. ..
Without a shadow of a doubt, though, our biggest thank you should go to Winter Olympics' rock God in residence, the legend Luther Grosvenor. Without his epic guitar slinging and interstellar storytelling (inter-Stella storytelling?) the last few months could have been very boring indeed. The great man is insistent that he won't come and hang out with us once we've moved to our new hipster headquarters in Hackney unless we send a Lear jet for him, so he asked to film a farewell (as if!) message for 'the fans'. Here (along with our own tribute to our excellent Streatham home is that footage.
....

............
We fully expect to see Bender at band practice on Thursday night.....
 ....
Right, let’s leave it there for another week.....
 ....
Speak to you soon....

Andrew WOx ....
 ....
ps. Your Winter O's won't be away from South London for long.... we’re back, back, BACK in Brixton on Friday 25 September to play Backstreets XIII at The Windmill. Remember I told you all about it the other day….....
 ....
Here’s the flyer again:....

....
pps. The Winter Os rock diary for the next ten days looks like this: The Computers and Turbowolf,  End of the Road Festival (Can. Not. Wait.) Bob Log, Jesu, The Lemonheads and the Tour of Britain cycling. See some of you down the back I hope!....
