JANUARY;

After ending 2008 with an EP release and a national tour the KP boys started 2009 in chill mode.

Big Dave featured in an interview on TV program State Focus that month discussing The Workshop program and the Raw Stories Ep. Click on the image below to check out a video of the interview.

Another notable event in January was the purchase of a bankrupt Death Row Records; the gangsta rap powerhouse was picked up by Wideawake entertainment for a cool 18mil.

Death Row Records was a huge influence on KP Rekordz and it’s artists but the news was also very special to the KP team because Big Dave’s mentor and KP Rekordz supporter “John Payne” took on the roll of Senior Vice President at the label.

The KP team would again like to thank John for his continued support over the years.

FEBRUARY;

Things at KP began picking up speed again in February with Doug and Dave returning to the studio to continue recording for the album Loaded Dice.
Other acts involved in production, mastering and collaborations were The Outlawz, Crooked I, Fatal, Mista Serve, N2W, Farq N Trik, Alienspeaking studio and Tarekith.

Big thanks go out to all involved.

MARCH;

Loaded Dice recording sessions continued in March and Big Dave moved closer to the Capital after around six years out of town serving time in prison and conforming to an enforced ban from Canberra.
It was welcome news to the rest of the KP team and our hometown supporters.
To check out a blog Dave wrote regarding his return to the area CLICK HERE

With Big Dave’s return planning began on The Workshop program, a hip hop course targeting troubled South Canberra teens.

Also in March the KP team began filming for a documentary titled “Scene Of The Crime” around the Canberra region.

APRIL;

By April things were heating up for the year as the recording sessions for Loaded Dice and the filming for Scene Of The Crime both came to a close.

We dropped a promo video for Scene Of The Crime in April and if your keen to have a look at it click on the image below.

Big Dave announced in April he would be hosting and producing episodes for the Jailbreak radio show on 107.3FM Sydney on behalf of his Behind The Walls project.

While things were going well for KP at this stage of the year they weren’t going so well for others around town and both our mates and enemies alike were getting caught up in violence and the justice system so Big Dave sat down and wrote a blog about the whole situation. CLICK HERE to have a read of that.

MAY;

As things moved toward the middle of the year the KP lads hit the stage again to perform songs from their upcoming release Loaded Dice.

Big Dave, Doug and Grantwho? performed two shows in May, One as part of Hip Hop TV’s fourth birthday celebration at The Roxy Theatre in Parramatta and another as part of Tappit’s “Out Of The Shadows” event on the Central Coast.

The Roxy Theatre gig can be seen on Hip Hop TV Australia’s upcoming digital TV program.

If you would like to check out some short video’s from our May gigs click the images below.

Dave also popped up for Hip Hop TV online discussing the Death Row Records comeback, CLICK HERE to read that blog.

Other notable news that month was the closure of the Belconnen Remand Centre.
Many of the KP team have spent time held in old BRC and we were happy to see the back of it.
To read a Canberra Times write up on the prisons closure with a few words from Big Dave CLICK HERE.

JUNE;

The first episode of Jailbreak hosted by Big Dave titled “Locked Up Again” went to air and included an interview with KP artist Doug.

The show looked at why over 65% of inmates return to prisons and contained music by former and current inmates of Australian prisons.
Since this first show Big Dave has gone on to become somewhat of a regular host on the show and continues to pump local hip hop on air.

Big Dave commenced “The Workshop Program” at Galilee School in Kambah A.C.T in conjunction with “The Lift Project”.
Running through June and July the course introduced some troubled and homeless kids from around Canberra to writing and recording hip hop and aimed to build self esteem and hope.

For more on the Workshop Program CLICK HERE. (video footage and more on how the course ran available in 2010.)

Another thanks has to go out to JP for his words with the kids for The Workshop program at the beginning of session one.

Grantwho? released his popular “Chhkk Chhkk Boom” bootleg on Youtube in June but after several thousand views it is removed due to use of footage owned by Channel 9.

JULY;

The second of Big Dave’s Jailbreak shows went to air.
Titled “The Punishment: industry the show explored the recent efforts to privatize more of the NSW prison system.
Click the image below to listen to/stream the show now.

Behind the scenes mixing work for Loaded Dice was underway through July along with the editing and polishing up process involved with the Scene Of The Crime documentary.

Another notable July event was KP Rekordz decision to sever ties with UK9 after 10 months working together as part of the distribution of KP’s first commercial Ep.

KP Rekordz will announce it’s new distribution partner in 2010.

AUGUST;

August began with the release of a promotional video for the Loaded Dice LP which you can watch by clicking the image below.

Finally after working on the Loaded Dice album and Scene Of The Crime doco for all most 9 months the boys dropped them both online as free releases on August 15th.

Since hitting the net in mid August both releases have totalled over 2,500 downloads and have also been streamed regularly around the web.

Being free releases we did not run any paid advertising (Besides a small add in our hometown music mag BMA) so we have relied on word of mouth and the internet to get these releases out there so a special thanks goes out to everyone who has shared a link, sent someone to our site, pumped the news on myspace and facebook, burnt a cd or dvd for a friend or even just spoke about it round your way!

Much respect and again big thanks!

To Download "Scene Of The Crime" CLICK HERE and to view the doco online CLICK HERE

Still on the subject of the net back in August we launched our new Facebook group which you can visit and sign up for by CLICKING HERE.

SEPTEMBER;

September started well but then turned out to be a bit of a dark month for everyone at KP.

Post the release of the new cd and dvd The Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong Newspaper) ran a story about bad boys who have turned out to be good Dads prominently featuring KP artists Doug and Big Dave.

Tragically just days after the story ran KP artist Doug was arrested on charges relating to a robbery and was remanded in custody until sentencing.
You can read the Mercury article titled “Sins Of The Father” by clicking the image below.

Doug has plead guilty to the charges and faced several court appearances since his arrest but at the time of writing this 2009 wrap up he was still awaiting sentencing.(Dec 7th 2009).

For a video update on the situation filmed around the time of Doug's arrest click on the image below.

In the final weeks of September Hip Hop TV released snippets of it’s 4th season on the net including interview and gig footage of KP boys Big Dave, Doug and Grantwho?
You can view the video by clicking the image below.

BMA magazine Canberra also featured a mention of KP in September including news of the album and Doug getting locked up.

Another notable event in September was the first official release from the now resurrected Death Row Records.
The first release was a remastered version of Dre’s classic the Chronic with new music and a dvd containing a rare Dr Dre interview.
For a short album review from KP CLICK HERE.

OCTOBER;

Big Dave’s stay on Jailbreak continued with the episode “Rhymes N Razor Wire” going to air, this episode was a show about the links between prison culture and hip hop culture including how the topic related to Dave’s time in the big house.

Dave was back behind the mic again in October recording the first single for his 2010 debut solo album.
The single titled “Days Gone By” is another factual life tale from Big Dave walking you through a journey from delinquent teen struggling to pay his rent to days in the weed game, time in prison, time building a rep in the rap game and eventually building an independent record label.

Death Row kept things moving to with the release of Snoop Dogg’s “The Lost Sessions”.
As with The Chronic release copies of the new Snoop LP were available free to members of kokyprik.com, stay tuned for more giveaways thanks to JP and Death Row Records.

NOVEMBER;

Work on “Days Gone By” continued and R n B vocalist “Kitty B” visited the KP studio to lay down a hook for the song.

Dave also met with director Sarina Talip and began work on the music video for “Days Gone By”.
Canberran’s may be familiar with Sarina’s work as a journolist for the Canberra Times. (You can read a 2008 special She wrote on local hip hop by CLICKING HERE.)

The music video and song “Days Gone By” will be released in early 2010.

Also in November kokyprik.com was archived by the National Film And Sound Archive.
The NFSA make culturally significant pieces of Australian music, film and media available for future generations.
Another bonus is a copy of our site will soon be available in over 1400 libraries across Australia.

A big thanks goes out to Rohan of the NFSA!

DECEMBER;

To finish up the year the KP team has been spending December arranging the Days Gone By music video while the song is in the States getting mixed and mastered.

Filming begins on January 30th and we hope to bring you our first professional music video in late February or at least by early March.
Keep an eye on our site for more details and updates.

In the mean time Big Dave has dropped a new blog about a few things you can expect from KP in 2010.
You can read that by CLICKING HERE.

It’s been another strong year here at the headquarters and like every year we want to warn everyone that there’s no letting up for KP.

We will be back next year stronger, faster and even more focused with more original ideas, more original music, more gigs, more video’s, more true Aussie street culture and some BIG surprises!

Again thanks for your support out there, with your back up were showin em whats really up!!!

Much respect from Big Dave, Doug, Grantwho?, Dean and the whole KP team.

See you in 2010 guys!!
Dean.

2) “Bullet In The Back”

With the cash flow down Doug and some of the boys head in to the Canberra suburbs to find themselves a house or two to break in to.

Roll with Doug to a house in Hackett and things are going to plan until the back door fly’s open.

3) “Taking Out The Competition”

With Big Dave’s skunk hustle going well a few other local south Canberran’s decide it would be a good idea to set up shop in the same area and help themselves to a few of Dave’s clients.

Arm up, jump in the LTD Falcon with the lads and come for a cruise to show them why that isn’t such a good idea.

4) “Knife In The Lung”

The life of a hustler can be up and down.

Down again and looking to get up, hit the street with Doug while he cash’s up robbing a local DJ before heading to QLD for a holiday.

Hi guys ive noticed it is hard to find someone who can master and mix music productions for a fair price.

Given there are alot more independent artists in the woeld today i thought this is going to be an increasing problem (finding a good engineer at a good price)

So because im not the richest man in the world i decided to invest in tons of studio time which i attended at 313 studios in wollongong where i gathered extensive MIXING and MASTERING skills and equipment knowledge.

I also invested loads of cash into buying studio quality equipment  so i could master my own productions for free. You can check out the equipment i own on my "recording gear blog", the type of equipment i own has been picked especcially for Dance and Hip Hop music "sorry Rock and other people i can't help you peace".

Anyways i did not intend this to end up becoming another way to make cash and help others out, i was pruely doing it to save my self some cash and so i didnt have to go to studios, but i have had heaps of E-mails from people asking me to help them out with there productions cause they cant get the mix right or master right so i have decided to share my skills for a small fee as i am very busy  with my own productions i cant be giving my time away for free now can i lol.

So if you would like to get your tracks mastered and or mixed prices are as follows:

Mastering

Per track average track time (3min to 8min)

$20

Mixing

Per track average track time (3min to 8min)

$20

Mastering and Mixing

Per track average track time (3min to 8min)

$40

What i need to Master Your track

I need a CD or a Wav file (NO MP3'S i repeat NO MP3'S ), they are low quality and will give a poor end result i suggest WAV files.

You can send your CD to

55 Emerson Rd Dapto N.S.W 2530 Australia

or you can send it via a file share or to my email then where ready to rock.

Guarantee

If you are not happy with the mastering or we can not come to an agreement i will not charge you for my service.

Grantwho Interview

First of Grant how does it feel to be signed on to Koky Prik Rekordz? It feels good i remeber when i first met dave and he let me in on his aspirations and i was only Djing at the time only just looking into production and i thought man thats what im misssing i was sick of playing everyone elses music i wanted to express my self more and then i went all out i was like a uni studen except with no money and learning every thing of the net ( the university of "YOUTUBE" ). So i went back to dave and showed him one of my beats, it was very average and i will never show anyone that beat lol, but it got me working hard and i left my home town to find a quiet place to learn and practise and came back with killer beats and skills now im offically making all beats for Koky Prik Records and other artists, hard work really does pay of in the end.

You grew up on rap but switched to mixing dance music as you got older, what was it that brought you home to hip hop? Hmmm it never really left me i always listen to dance and hip hop i love them both i just couldnt get much work djing hip hop so i worked as a house dj and focused more on it but soon as i strated producing i realised the potential of hip hop and also realised my passion for the genre and found i could get work in the industrie making beats for people.

Being involved with the production of dance music and hip hop do you find that you blur the lines when of genres when producing a track? When i started producing i thought i was going to have that problem and eventually pick a side so to speak, especially when seeing other examples of it and watching peoples careers train wreck but i have changed my view on it and i believe it can enhance all your areas of production if you are truly passionate about music and your motives are genuine. For example a chef starts of cooking say french alacte style but travels the world and lerns spanish cooking, chiness, italian, etc and with all there knowledge they are able to enhance there own style and create wonderful dishs, thats how i view it with an open mind and versatillity.

So what can we expect to hear style wise from the new Koky Prik beat master? I would still like to keep a little classic hip hop feel to most of my tracks but i am verey experimental and am tryin to find the ultimate electronic style to incorporate into hip hop. So you can expect alot of phat bass, hard synth lines and tonnes of wierd noises. So if anyone out there wants a hardcore beat you know where to come.

Which producers do you draw inspiration from in the dance and hip hop arenas? There are so many its so competitive these days everyone is pushing the boundarrys and it's consitently inspiring. Heres some that influence me alot, firstly Hip Hop Neptuens (phat drums and very experimental), Dre (tough bass lines and drums) , Kayne( good sampler) , Timbo (great arrangements and synths), P money ( good beats and melodys) 2pac (fearless and life changing) . Secondly Dance James Zabiela (great performer crazy ideas) Hook n Sling ( keeping it real phat sounds) Deadmu5 (wicked synths and bass) Davespoon (cool drums and bass) Ian carey (good melodys,remix's and sloid work ethic) Eric morello (legend and works with hi hop and dance this guy changed my life).

Where would you prefer to be behind the decks at a rowdy hip hop concert or behind the mixing board putting tracks together?They are both cool in ther own way i love making tracks and it is a selfish side cause i do it for my own pleasure, but i love shareing it to, when everyone digs what your doing its the best feeling in the world. It may look like im having an average time behind the deks but im just trying to contain myself so i dont look like a dick head lol. Everything is always hightened when your sharing it with someone so i would have to say behind the decks.

Can you tell us a bit about the equipment and software you use to produce your beats? For sure i use alot of soft ware and computer based stuff i love anoluge synth but just dont have the money to buy them, i boorow them of mates when ther feeling genirous. I have alist of all the stuff i use on my myspace page, but heres a basic run down. I use Abelton live for ideas and scratch tracks and use lots of Vsts to produce my sounds and bounce down to Cubase. I have an Mpd24 for drums and sampling, a Bcr2000 for controlling synths, a Dbx compresor for phating up sounds. A Rodes mike and a Pionner dj setup for ideas and mixing. Also some killer monitors to here shit with that is a absolute must.

Your first official Koky Prik Rekordz track "These Days" features Big Dave and Doug what goes through your mind when making a beat for each individual artist ? To be ohnest i just funk around with ideas and old records untill i find something that fits. When i made These days i was set up in Dougs kitchen and i had a few fresh beats for him to pick out, so he choose the ones he liked one of which i really liked and wanted to keep for one of my own tracks but i didnt tell him that, so they where wriiting the words as we recorded and they where taking a bit of time to finish so i started making some more beats while i was waiting and i showed them These Days and they loved it and i did a trade of for the beat i wanted back so i was pretty stoked. I realised from doing that i am at a level where i can create music for the artist's as they write there lyrics which is great so now my songs are more tailor made.

So who is Grantwho the man? Tell us a bit about yourself where you grew up, your other interests etc. Well i grew up in Mac Fields and Cambelltown it was pretty crap but we had some good times. I moved to canberra for a couple of years got mixed up in a bad lifestyle, then moved to the south coast where i started to relly find my self i discoverd surfing which i do dailly, i love boxing its best for any ocasion lol, i snowboard every winter i like to keep active and music is the rest of my life. I have a pretty tight family sometimes i feel where to close i have sacrafised alot for them and they have for me to, only now i realise how important family is and how lucky i am. Me as a person to round it down i like to experience as much as i can and want to be for i die.

Making music is your passion so no doubt you have some goals in mind, what does Grantwho want to see happen while he is at Koky Prik? I would like to see the uprising of hardcore hip hop in aus, a few albums be completed, a shit load of calaborations with other artists in australia, some experimental music come through and some community projects be put into action to encourage more kids to get involved in the industrie. Also i would lke to be involved in a national tour.

I understand you will be writing some regular product reviews at kokyprik.com what can we expect to see in those? I have had alot of help from america and there alot of sites which host product reviews which i found to be very valuble so im going to try and do a similar thing here and start picking out key products which come out which i feel will be benifical for australian artists, stuff for producers and artists, things like recording software, hardware instruments etc, things which i feel will help others careers or ateast providing a dfferent option.

Technology is having a massive impact on the way music is made and produced how do you embrace these advances and changes in technique? I am growing up with change so it is allready embeded in me i get excited when new things come out, my main problem is not getting to carried away with it all and getting the jobs done lol. I think where in a stage where it will be easy for anyone to create music and the industrie is flooded with a shit load of wannabes but i rekon the fads and images will slowly die of when people realise how much hard work has to go into developing a career in music and it will revert back to makeing good music which means something to someone.

Koky Prik Rekordz has made a lot of noise in the Australian media regarding there work with prison inmates.

How do you feel about the work being done here at the label? I have alot of friends locked up my father was locked up for a while and i here alot of story's about treatment and conditons i wont go into them right now but i feel some people deserve to be there and some people need some chances and it would be a great bennifit to the community if more effort was made in distinguishing between the two and providing oppurtunitys for those retuning to society.

You have been on the road with Koky Prik as a dj for some time now and it seems like you and the boys gel well on stage, what can people who haven't seen you live expect from you if they get to a Koky Prik show? They can never expect the same thing as the last i like to change the performances everytime you will never see the same show twice, i think buy doing this it keeps the shows fresh and surprising and breaks the minotany for us, plus i get new ideas for futre tracks that way. I take a little bit of gear but not to extensive cause i hate sound checks ide rather make adjust as we go. I love bass so you will here tonnes of that and i try to keep the music aspect flowing right through alot of artists throw on a track and start rappen but its alll the things in between which make it that extra bit enjoyable and professional.

To finish up man what would Grantwho be up to on the perfect day? Mixing up one of 2pac's verses (legally) in my own club on the beach drinking and freestyling with a bbq craking

On behalf of everyone at Koky Prik Rekordz, all our supporters and friends in the industry I would like to welcome Grantwho to Koky Prik Rekordz Australian hip hop's "Home Of The Real".

GW'S DJ AND RECORDING GEAR

This is all the gear used by GW to make his beats and record the boys and chikys

Also a short explanation about what each bit of kit does and why its used

listed from least favourite to the cant do with out

2x LAPTOPS

I have 2 laptops for a couple of reasons ( i don't have a desktop because laptops are portable and are just as good, there handy when you travel a lot but you have to be patient with them sometimes, back them up regularly and you should be fine, give or take a few crash's lol). Anyways i use one for performance via "ABELTON' and a shit load of plugins, and i use the other for making beats and mastering my on the road setup is just one lap top but when I'm in the studio (garage lol) i use two one for "Vst Synths" and the other for laying it down i route the synth purpose one through a compressor to make the connection.

EDIROL KEYBOARD

I us this for making my melodies via my vsts i have a couple mappings but i keep it pretty simple i like to use the mouse a lot, its quicker.

OXYGEN 8 KEYBOARD

I use this for live performance to play bass lines some drums and launch stuff its handy and fun to use its also good for production on the road, small light, usb, plenty of controls, its a good substitute for the edirol while I'm away.

BCR 2000

I like the bcr I'm not using it to its full potential but I'm getting there when i first got it i use to map out a whole "Vst synth" for every control but i found it quicker to edit synths with a mouse so what i do now is map only a few main parameters per "Vst" so now i have 5 synths all accessible of the one controller and setting its working great i got the idea from watching a video on the new virus snow its a analogue synth with a couple main parameter's but you can edit in detail with other options, i thinks its a great way to do things.

SAFFIRE LE

The saffire was a must have "Focus Right" are a good company with great hard ware and software and they gave me a good option for routing inputs and outputs. The software interface for the sound card is a little confusing at first but it makes sense after continued use, it sucks thoe when you read the instructions and you cant get sound for ages lol ( I hate reading instructions ).

BEHRINGER TRUTH B2301A MONITORS

These monitors are brilliant for the price I'm not a big fan of "Behringer" but i have 3 of there products hahahahaha. I done my research and these where the best monitors for the price and sound. I really think you don't want to have the best monitors or the cheapest you want the ones that are going to give you an honest response as all your music will eventually turn into an "MP3". The truths are cheap and have a good sound no amps needed.

DICK SMITH CHEAP HOME SPEAKERS

That brings me to these bad boys i got these cheap $100 dollar pair of dick smith speakers to reference my tracks you want to check your choons on regular speakers so you get a good idea what your stuff is going to sound like in cars and homes.

MAKIE SRM 450 SPEAKERS

I got these for private partys and testing tracks at loud levels they do there job with no drams, except form the neighbours.

AKAI MPD 24

I wish i had the money for an "MPC 5000" but i don't so i got an "MPD 24" its a controller it has no sounds or presets or nothing it just gives you the feel of using an "MPC" for a lot less price, you hook it up via software i use "ABELTONS" "DRUM RACKS" it pretty much gives me the same feel an idea of that of its big brother. You cant beat it when making "HIP HOP" or just sampling. Its almost a creativity must have like like having cafes in Melbourne or surfies in Queensland lol ( i love it). You no what's funny the "MPC 5000" and the "MPD 24" have numbers attached to the names that is close the the price difference between them ones $5000 and the other is $240 hahahahahahahahahahahaha funny shit.

M BOX 2

This was my first bit of recording gear i kind of bought this without doing much research i didn't really have an idea about what i would need in the future or how in-depth i was going to get, its pretty limited piece pretty good for vocals and instruments.

2x CDJ MK111

Im a dj at hart love mixing and love these cd players pretty versatile, easy to use and they don't skip. Plus they are an industrie standard so you have to get good at them.

EFX 1000

This is a fun bit of gear you can sample all they lon with it creating loops on the fly you can go for hours with out stopping, its a great creative tool. My favourite effects are filter echo and trans.

DJM 800

I bought this with out thinking i had an efx 1000 so really i did not need the extra effects which it boasted, plus it has broken down twice first it was the volume pot and the cue they tried to blame it on me but i googeled the problem and it was a consistant problem with the model it even happened to my friends one so I'm not happy about that pionneer. When i got it back a short time later the lcd screen stop shineing its pretty lights so now i have to mix blind i cant send it back cause it is out of warranty, thanx again pionner.

DBX 266 XL

I have a new found love for compressors they are the shiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttt i can not express that enough if your struggling with a flat digital signal run it through a compressor it is sure to phaten it up. Dbx is a great company and affordable for artists on a budget i recomend it highly. I got mine for $200 brand new from "DJ Warehouse in melbourne, i get a lot of stuff from there i don't bother with the sydney one anymore there always trying to sell you something more expeneive and from m experience never have what i want in stock but for some reason melbourne does, this is my experience they maybe allright but i just have better luck from melbourne.

BEHRINGER MDX 2400

Hahahaha another "Behringer" product, they are still pretty crap, i belive i got lucky with the three items i have purchsed from them i got this compressor for $100 and it works great the reson why it works great is because they copied the design from another compettitor ( i don't want to say, i might get in trouble). Anyways this works great so keep an eye out at garage sales and markets you will never know what little surprises youl find.

KORG KAOSSILATOR

My little toy i use this to conjur up ideas for tracks it is portable runs on batteries connects via RCA or plug headd phones in it, you have 100 preset sounds, 50 arpegiation, 31scales, a kaos pad, 8 bars of looping and you can sync the bpms. I havnt takin it to gigs but cant wait to get comfortable with it to take it. Its a fun littel toy to play with if your sick of putting all your money into poker machines.

SOFTWARE

Software is pretty important you really have to know what your after cause you can spen a lot of money and waste a lot of time if your not clear.

I suggest trialing a few "DAWS" (digital audio work stations) and sticking with the one you feel most comfortable with. Theres a lot of talk about which one is better and for what ever style of music you make but i think its up to the user, technology is at a high level and all "DAWS" have positives and negatives. All in all there pretty close in quality and are forever updating and improveing so i think stick with what feels best aslong as you achieve what your after and find ways to deal with problems don't give up on your program. Me personaly i like to use certain things from certain programs which i will explain below.

REASON

Reason is cool in the way where it is fully virtual, the designers have layed the program out like physical componets you would find in a real studio so you can get a real idea how a studio is constructed and routed, you can hit tab and flip the front panels of your "DAW" over to see what the physical instuments look like and route them with virtual cabels just like you would in a studio ( via a patch bay). I only use reason for the "REDRUM" drum machine the "SUBTRACTOR" synth and "MALSTROM" synth i route them via rewire or physical compressore to another program. The big dissapointment with "REASON" is you cant use "VST'S" and a lot of other plugins with "REASON" untill that changes i wont use reason as my main program. The program has plenty of good quality plugins and effects i just prefur choice.

CUBASE

I learnt cubase a while ago but did not like it at first cause i felt it had a lot of useless feature's and i found it hard to move around the program but upon useing it a lot more with other producers who favour this "DAW" i realise it is great for mastering the quality of plugins and eq's are excelent and the allgorythms are very tight. So i mainly use it for mastering purposes, it sits on one laptop and recives all the signals from my other laptop and instruments and bounces down my creations.

PROTOOLS

"Pro Tools" is a good program for recording live artists this was my first software purchase i got it with my "M BOX" and you need a digidesin piece of hadware connected to be able to use it i think it is a great "DAW" for mastering aswell as tracking heaps of instruments. I didn't use it much as you could not time stretch in the early edititions but now you can. I should use it more but i you have to be connected to the hardware to use it so it makes it hard to master on the go. "PRO TOOLS" is great for home studio and is an industrie standard like "LOGIC" you will usually find these two programs in every studio, "LOGIC" is more more dance and electronic music and "PRO TOOLS" is more for live music, tracking and film.

ABELTON

This program is my bread and butter i use is it a shit load it is easy to use with loads of flexibillity and it is the only program which has session view which means you can audition heaps of ideas on the fly.Everything you do in this program is time synced so it adjusts in realtime which is great for getting your ideas out real fast so you don't loose your vibe or ideas your going for. The key features which i like are the sample editor , synths and envelope controls. This is my prefered "DAW" for building tracks and performing live but i am not mastering in it any more i find my tracks tend to sound a bit hollow so I'm mastering in "CUBASE". All my ideas are produced with this program and i recomend it to anyone.

PLUGINS

I have a shit load of plugins this is a tricky subject because some high priced plugins are crap and you can find some really good FREE ones so i feel there is no right or wrong choice, basically what ever works best for you. Here are some of my opinions thoe.

Try not to have to many to navigate through as you will get lost and make it hard and long to finish projects

Trial as many as you can and listen to the quality of sound which comes out of them, theres a lot with low fidelity sounds and you can spot them when you here a lot of hissing, bit reduction type noises in the majority of there presets.

Keep the ones which are easy for you to use, if your not comfortable with vintage interfaces don't use them, you will be able to use them in time with continued use of simpler ones.

Organise your folders well eg: synths in one folder,effects in another folder, mastering suite in another and so on don't have them all in the one folder.

TRILLOGY

This is the king for bass there sounds are so tight its crazy and you can layer two bass sounds straight up all day long i love it and will probablly use it till the end of my career.

FM8

Loads of cool sounds and has easy options to edit sounds or you can go way way in depth the evelope editor is brilliant you can make long sequences from one sound, its pretty advanced but can be simple if you want it to be.

PRO 53

Vintage style with tonnes of presets great for that extra little something in your music if you don't have a heap of time. Very fun visually to use.

NEXUS

I use this for leads and pads mainly it is reall simple only a few basic controls but very powerfull i still havnt got the anoluge patchs but i here there great. i recomend this for first timers you will have a ball.

MASSIVE

The name speaks for it self. Its massive pretty tight sound very reliable, what you see is what you get vintage style work station but jazzed up.Nice synth to work with it is always suprising me.

OTHER STUFF

I have HD25 head phones they sound great and all the parts are replaceable with othe headphones soon as you brake them your stuffed so thats why i like the HD25's. I have a Rode NT1A mike, it sounds good for multiple purposes there are better ones but im more about beats the vocals, i usually go to a studio to record vocals and last but not least i have a few trustie IPOD's for listening to tracks on the go and just for a second reference when mastering.
