December 4, 2009 - Friday

Great acoustic gig the other night at The Camden Head. Many thanks to all those who came and made it such a party. We also found a great new sound too - acoustic guitars, bass, glockenspiel and mannie playing the drums on an upturned kitchen bin. We're definitely gonna play more acoustic gigs like this,

so watch this space.

The Fleas are delighted to announce that Steve Branston has now joined the band on bass, completing the line-up after the abrupt and perplexing departure of Michael Boylan.

Steve's amazing and has already learned the set, so the band will now be able to play gigs this side of Christmas. Everyone in the band is over the moon to have found such a good guy who can actually play well too. Watch this space for more info...

The Fleas - "Nine Track Demo" (unsigned)

I love it when I hear something that I know I'm gonna stick in my personal collection and play over and over. "The Fleas", according to the P.R, are a five-piece, currently rehearsing for London gigs in the spring.
If you like it timeless and tuneful then you're in for a treat.
'Something or Nothing' is all acoustic guitars, plonky pianos, heartfelt sentiments, soft funky bass and sweetly harmonised vocals. Nice!
'Dreadful Blonde' is a little bit darker but despite those undertones still made me chuckle....flat mate's nightmare girlfriends being the subject - "I can't breathe with her around...she's always on my play-station...and she don't put things back where they're found"
This guy has a beautiful voice....plain and simple, fractured and fragile and framed so well in 'Downer' and 'Rain' with it's ever so slightly latinoesque rhythms.
There are some great tunes on this demo and plenty of interesting narratives to boot and I for one shall look forward to hearing what a few fleas can do live!
I was bit...bit by the fleas....
So if you fancy getting bit too...go check them out

The road to fame and riches is littered with setbacks. This we Fleas know only too well, and it's a fact we're painfully aware of at the moment. Why? Because our new bass player left the band without warning a couple of weeks ago.

Not only did he leave without discussion, but he left us high and dry when we had a couple of gigs yet to play. Grrr. Definitely not good band etiquette. Anyway, this means we're having to pull out of our live commitments for a while and audition for a new bassist.

Because our set is so diverse, we need a bass player that can straddle melody and groove - a challenge that not everyone is equal to.

So if anyone out there fancies it, and can play indie melodies with a bit of soul, the auditions are happening this Sunday, 8th Nov. Get in touch.

Sorry fans. See you out there again soon.

So we five happy, hungover Fleas have just returned from our Shropshire band camp, where we spent a weekend taking midnight punts across lakes, feeding the pigs, avoiding wasps and forking matter in a minging kitchen sink. Oh, and we also wrote some rad new tunes, full of classic Fleas-style hooks, harmonies and hriffs. It really was an excellent place to write and to bond as a band.

It enabled us to appreciate how Michael's introduction has pushed The Fleas up to another level musically... check out his bass lines on the newly-posted songs for proof of the apple crumble. The Shropshire Sessions (as they might one day be whispered reverentially about by the more cultured musicologists) also proved how intuitive we have become with each other, the speed at which impromptu jams evolved into structured songs. Piers also proved himself to be a moderately able rapper and vaguely passable Lionel Ritchie impersonator, although we're sorry to report we have no video evidence of this.

New Autumn gigs coming up... watch this space!

28th August 2009

Well its been a month since the last update and things are coming along nicely. We have been working hard at rehearsals on the old songs, fine tuning them and putting together a set for upcoming shows. We have also been spending some time working on new songs which are really beginning to take shape and we hope to play them soon at future shows. Our demo is also having the finishing touches to it and we hope to have something for you to listen to soon.

We also welcome back Bern to the group who has been away on maternity leave.

The big news is we played our first show in a long time at The Boileroom in Guildford last Wednesday. What a great little venue with a nice size crowd. It was an important night for us as it was our first gig with new bassist Michael and our first show with Bern back onboard. Well all the hard work at rehersals paid off as we played a blinder and the crowd seemed to enjoy the songs. After the show we were approached by a promotor and DJ who really enjoyed our set and would like to play some songs on his radio show and put on another gig for us at The Boileroom. Thanks to anyone who made it down to the show. We played the following songs,

1. Tired Of Hanging Around
2. Dreadful Blonde
3. Downer
4. Something Or Nothing
5. Mad At You
6. Please Don't Resign
7. Outside

A mini review of the show with small video clip can be found here,

We have also uploaded some photos from the show so please stop by and have a look.

The other big news is we now have some ace Fleas T-shirts available for sale very soon. Watch this space for more details.

As we head towards the winter months, plans are taking shape which will see us kept busy. We are still booking up more gigs which will be announced on here as soon as we get confirmation. In a few weeks we hope to head to Shropshire to spend a few days writing and rehearsing. Followed shortly by a photoshoot and some time in the studio recording. These are some of the building blocks for the big plans we have for next year. So, exciting times ahead for us all.

Until next time - Keep itching.

June 2, 2009 - Tuesday
Well, the wait is over. Bern finally gave birth to Darwin Elizabeth who was born on June 2nd. Mother and baby are both doing well and I'm sure your join me in wishing Piers, Bern, Hec and Darwin all the best for the future.

Michael - Bass Flea
May 27, 2009 - Wednesday
Still no baby from Bernadette. We have prescribed hot curries and long walks to hurry the process up.

Meanwhile, the rest of the band have been hard at work in the studio, getting our new bassist, Michael, up to speed, and working on some new tracks. Meanwhile, the demo is coming on apace and will soon be available on our MySpace page.

At the same time, we're getting more serious about what we're doing, and have drawn up a plan for world domination. It's mostly thanks to Michael, who has already tasted success with his previous band, Inter, and now refuses to slum it with unsigned losers. Quite right too.

So, there's a long list of jobs to do; things like sort out a new photoshoot, book a promotions agency, and all the incredibly dull things you have to do if you actually want to get noticed as a band. We had a big meeting at the weekend and talked it all through and it's all quite exciting. So once we've got our little demo done, we're going to record an EP with a proper producer and promote it professionally.

What this all means is that when we come back, after the baby is born, we'll be coming back with a bang. Watch this space.
