Slumping in Your Murals
By Vish Khanna

Flying under the radar, Halifax's Share have quietly been building up to Slumping in Your Murals, a mature, roots-tinged pop achievement. Singer/guitarist Andrew Sisk possesses a unique perspective on instability, conjuring songs about unrest in a hazy voice that places Share somewhere between the Sea and Cake and Wintersleep. But there's a rural bent to his approach that works on a folk level — like songs sung around campfires backed by cinematic soundtracks. Just as something like "Date & Time" plays at pop sophistication, integrating a variety of sounds for something haunting, there are thoughtfully low-key moments like the Jenn Grant duet "Maybe Always," where hopefully forlorn voices are tucked in under a blanket of ambience provided by Share and the lap steel of guest Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse). Overseen by In-Flight Safety's Daneil Ledwell, Murals has a rich murkiness that suits this latest line-up of an ever-shifting band, discovering their most effective configuration. Tastefully compelling, Share stand tall on this wondrous new record. Click on this link to read the accompanying interview

Even though Share has been around in various forms since 2005 we have never been a band until the creation of our new album Slumping in Your Murals
We began working with Daniel Ledwell after hearing the production work he had done on his own first album (www.myspace.com/danielledwell..) and knew of his multi- instrumental abilities.  He was a perfect match and we started in May of 2008 we began work on the songs that would become Slumping in Your Murals. In bits and pieces, at Andy Magoffin's London, ON House of Miracles studio, at Kyle's Family Cottage, and then in Bedrooms in Halifax, the album came into formation.  Jenn Grant came in to add ambient and spooky backing vocals, as well, Mike (Snailhouse) Feuerstack came in to sing on a track and ended up adding essential ambient lap steel guitar to a couple songs as well.  The album became a thing of its own and after a year's work its ready for the world to hear it.

"We believe an album is an important medium where the songs line up to examine one theme or idea.  Each song is connected and pursues a different angle of the same concept.  On all of the Share albums we have chosen songs that tell a single secret story.
Something that has always captured my imagination is the tradition of Central American artists using Murals to tell stories.  It appealed to me in an innate way. It stayed with me and very much influenced the creation of this album.
Astrology was on my mind while writing many of these songs and when I started to look back at other songs I wanted on the album I noticed a trend of thought: wanting to know the future, how time and place play with/against each other, etc.   It dawned on me that if our destinies lay in the stars, then all of our stories are up in the sky amongst the constellations,  like a big mural in the sky.  If slumping is a posture that captures the mood of this album then the songs are the murals, hence Slumping in your Murals."

Over the past year we have put our hearts into this album and are proud of the final result.  We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

We look forward to seeing you on the road.

Hello Gang,

We have Evonne Winchiu to thank for spreading our music around but Amanda Putz for being so generous with her words and decision to pick "Maybe Always" as a song of the day.

    Check it out.

Well, I don't know how it happened but here we are.  We are about to depart Overseas once again.  We are lucky.  We have been accepted to a few festivals in the UK and tacked on a few dates in London and York to fill up our trip.  I believe we have one day off.....which i hope to spend at the Tate Modern Art Museum or maybe do a tea tour.

Only two weeks after we return from the UK we depart on our first Cross Canadian Tour as a 5 piece Band. Beside several shows in central Canada, including an appearance at NXNE in Toronto,  Via Rail has offered us passage on their trains in exchange for on Board Performances which will make for a unique trek. We will be performing as an acoustic 3 piece while on the train. We will be joining Grand Theft Bus in Western Canada for several full band concerts before making the jaunt back east on the Train.

Lastly,  the new album "Slumping in your Murals" will be released on August 4th, 2009.  If you are curious, we have songs posted online already, and of course we will be performing the new album on all of our upcoming tours.  We hope to see you at the shows.

The dates are posted!

Our good friends GTB (Grand Theft Bus) are heading out west and we are joining them for a tour of epic proportions.  I am not saying that there are any golden fleeces involved, but this will be one to remembered.  We hope to finally see all of you from out west who have been asking to see us for these past couple of years.

We might just have copies of our new album with us........

Current mood:  bouncy
We were lucky enough to have some good reviews recently:
"Share is the brainchild of Canadian songwriter Andrew Sisk. He hails from small town Canada; Chipman, New Brunswick to be exact. Three albums in, Share write warm songs with heart and charm. Pedestrian is a record with lo-fi intimacy, and an odd ball sense of playfulness."
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/tag/andrew-sisk/

Sometimes a record just works: songs become greater due to their collective power, and a certain atmosphere eases you into simple enjoyment. Forming around Andrew Sisk's songs, Share are a group who provide a warm reminder of the success of well-considered melody, echoing The Shins' unwritten manifesto. Ideas are never overdone or outstay their welcome, verses and songs realise their potential, delicately disappear, and slowly Pedestrian unfurls, gaining pace and strength.

Yet more Canadian indie types with intelligence and imagination? Share have their home in Halifax, Novia Scotia though, rather than the saturated Montreal of The Dears, Arcade Fire and A Silver Mt. Zion. Unlike their Quebecois cousins though, Share disregard the bellowing triumph of violin, viola and whatever else makes those bands so magnificent, instead opting for a sound more akin to their freezing coastal home, stripped down, with rough guitar and pacey tempos. And not a French lyric in sight.

The acoustic shimmies are lifted on occasion by the barest hint of studio trickery, the stuttering vocal effects on opener 'The Great Before,' for example. 'Foreign Church' has some nice harmonies and 'The Yard' benefits from the drummer waking up and Catherine MacLellan adding some contrast with delicate backing vocals.

HI,

We play music cause we love music and one of the best parts of touring is getting to play with bands that you have never heard before (or love already) and see them perform.  In this past year we have gotten to play with some of our favourites like Snailhouse (www.myspace.com/snailhouse), The Two Minute Miracles (www.myspace.com/twominutemiracles), and Smothered in Hugs (www.myspace.com/smotheredinhugsband) but on this tour we were lucky enough to play with bands that were wonderful surprises.  Here are some new bands you really should check out:

VillagersFrom Dublin, a project of songwriter Conor J. O'brien with a truly amazing backing band, I was lucky enough to perform solo with them in Dublin at the Ruby Sessions.  It was of the best sets I had ever seen from such a new band.  They just released their first EP and I wish I had one.

Peter Broderick-  He is really well known in Europe and lives there now even though he is from the U.S.  He performs solo while looping the many instruments he has mastered.  He was a perfect performer and his songs were all amazing.  Also,  a really really nice guy.

Orphans and VandalsThey were so good that I just sat and watched their whole set without moving once.  Velvet underground- ish with brilliant arrangements and honest songs, I wish they would come to Canada.

Emmy Moll-  From Hamburg, we played with them in Berlin.  They were fantastic.  Just plain Fantastic.  Great songs, arrangements, moods and sounds.  I think you can't help but enjoy their music.

Please enjoy this music.  Sometimes the really good stuff doesn't get very far for foolish reasons.  This music is something that deserves to be heard everywhere.  I hope this helps spread some good music around.

We had an amazing time touring through the UK and to Berlin and we have so many people to thank.

Firstly,  Jess at CODA for helping us arrange everything,  Shain Shapiro for all of his support (and the amp we borrowed),  Karishma Patel for her hospitality, Lori and Roddi for their Kindness and beds, Grand Theft Bus and the Olympic Symphonium for being fun,  James at Forward Music Group for drumming up support, Paul for letting us borrow his Flat,  all the other bands that let us use their gear, Jack and Joel in Newcastle for being great promoters and hosts, Lynne in Leeds for her directions, and a big giant thank you to Nils in Berlin for his Generosity and hospitality.  Nils you're too good!  And to all of the people who came to the shows, or fed us, or gave us directions when we were lost.
