Is it the digital reissue of an imaginary techno compilation that should have been released 15 years ago in order to not sound completely redundant? Or is it an hommage to the classic 90ies braindance sound? Is it the audible result of a minor schizophrenic outburst? Or just a bunch of straightforward electronic/techno/breakbeat tracks ready to kick your ass?

Choose your perspective!

The Brainslug Paradox - Front The Brainslug Paradox - Back The Brainslug Paradox - Inlay The Brainslug Paradox - Side A The Brainslug Paradox - Side B

So, what does all this mean? It means that I have contributed several new tracks and mixes to The Brainslug Paradox, the newest compilation on Zhang Jian Wen's gorgeous Chinese bypass netlabel. You'll find new exclusive material by Photophob, Macon Tights, Das Gritli Moser as well as by some new pseudonyms of mine.

Well, ok, there's no denying it (you already guessed it anyway). It's just another full length Photophob release, hidden under the magic cap of an imaginary 90ies braindance compilation. Ha-ha. Have fun!

News for newts, words for nerds:

PHOTOPHOB | Newsletter
| April 2008

Ok, here we go: the newsletter is quite long this time, I hope you’ll nevertheless fight your way through successfully - you won’t regret it (well, maybe you will, how should I know...?).

I.    Out now as free netrelease on laridae.at:

PHOTOPHOB - Skaphander Skanks
Skaphander Skanks Front   Skaphander Skanks Back
Style: Drill ’n Bass / IDM / Electronica
Tracks: 13
Run time: 60:49
Format: Mp3 (vbr1)
Cat.-Nr.: laridae039

..

After two beatless ambient albums (released as Herwig Holzmann on autoplate and bruit) and a hard ’n heavy breakcore mashup (released as Das Gritli Moser on laridae.at), I am back with a brandnew album under my main moniker  Photophob:

On Skaphander Skanks I (again!) devote myself to what I just love the most: Retro Sci-Fiction influenced fast-forward Drill ’n bass absurdities, full of cheesy overdone pathos and hyperactive breakbeats, puckishly scattered to the four cosmic winds.

If you liked my Music for Spaceports releases, this is for you!

So, turn on your autopilot, release the safety of your Hyades Laser Blaster and get ready for take-off! There are galaxies waiting to be discovered, spaceports to be descended on and exotic alien beauties to be worshipped...

(And be sure to have a look into the booklet, there are lots of love and enthusiasm squeezed into all these pixels...).

Skaphander Skanks is now available for free on our netlabel laridae.at

More info at: photophob.net /
laridae.at / myspace.com/photophob

II.  Appearances and contributions:

Some single tracks have been released on different compilations since the last issue of this newsletter:

I produced a remix
for Milieus track Tiffany Lane from his album Our Blue Rainbows . The remix CD album Our Blue Remixes can be ordered from EED. On it you’ll find my track side by side with remixes by artists like EOD, Brian Ellis, Ourson and Wisp.

Then I contributed a cold, frosty ambient track to tonAtoms winter compilation frozen fields - "an album for winter time."

And last but not least, I had the honor to produce a track + corresponding sound effects for the great Tetroid 2012 computer game / electronic music compilation on Entity netlabel (along with
Binray, BLAERG, tomoroh hidari and lots of other great artists)
. Tetris meets experimental electronica meets epileptic seizure - you don’t want to miss that!

And a little teaser in the end: you should check the binkcrsh website from time to time... something’s gonna happen there soon.

III.  Artwork for Iambic²

A little bit of promotion for nonmusical works: I created the artwork for As The Snow Fell - the latest album by Iambic². The whole release + artwork can be downloaded for free on laridae.at

..

FM4 featured the album in an article and also appreciated the artwork. I have to admit: makes me quite proud.

Lovely greetings and all the best,

PHOTOPHOB | Newsletter
| December 2007

It's Krampus day here in Austria - and I am proud to present you a new releasenew photophobian side project that just perfectly fits today's demonic mood:

I.    Out now as free netrelease on laridae.at:

DAS GRITLI MOSER:
Cha-Cha-Cha With The Devil  [laridae036]
Gritli Front   Gritli Back
Style: Breakcore / Noise / IDM / Experimental
Tracks: 9
Run time: 66:06
Format: Mp3 (vbr1)
Cat.-Nr.: laridae036

With my newest side project I go horror. On 9 dark tracks, Photophob's wicked little sister
"Das Gritli Moser" delivers a fierce pandemonium of breakcore, noise and dirty samples - and a big stinky load of black humor.

"Cha-Cha-Cha With The Devil" is the kind of music Beelzebub tries to dance to. You can try too - it can't make things much worse.

"Cha-Cha-Cha With The Devil" is now available for free on our netlabel laridae.at

II.  Still fresh:

Check out my latest releases:

This time it's all about great Polish Sci-Fi writer Stanislaw Lem: Available as free downloads are a new ambient album +  a podcast special, both dedicated entirely to the works of this great man! Interested? - Read on!

I.    Out now as free netrelease on bruit:

Herwig Holzmann: LEM. >> DOWNLOAD

..
Style: Ambient / Soundscapes / Abstract / Experimental
Tracks: 10
Run time: 46:42
Format: Ogg Vorbis (vbr)
Cat.-Nr.: 071111br7

"LEM." is (after "How To Stop..." on autoplate) the second album released under my real name. And it is (after "Five Odes To Lem" on binkcrsh) my second release dedicated entirely to the works of Polish science fiction author Stanislaw Lem.

During 45 cold and unearthly minutes of ambient soundscapes, I tried to evoke a feeling of despair and an omnipresent lack of understanding. Like the protagonists in Lem's books, the listener is confronted with the alien, the unfamiliar and disturbing - yet interspersed with fragile glimpses of beauty and warmth.

"LEM." is now available for free on Dr. Nachtstrom's fresh new netlabel bruit.

More info at: photophob.net /
bruit.at / listening blog

II.  Now available as free podcast episode on Überklang:

Überklang (Episode Nr. 32): LEM. >> PLAY

I had the honor to assist famous Dr. Nachtstrom in producing a radio show about polish Sci-Fi author Stanislaw Lem, which had been broadcasted live on november 11th 2007, on Radio Helsinki. The show (120 minutes in German) is now available as free download on Dr. Nachtstrom's wonderful podcast Überklang. Go get it!

HERWIG HOLZMANN - HOW TO STOP... [apl046]
now available for free on autoplate!

Format: mp3 (vbr)
Tracks: 11
Run time: 65:34
Style: Ambient / Downbeat

This album (released under my real name for a change) is a sort of ambient complement to the various complex and beat-oriented works I did during the last few years. If you liked the slow and calmed down style of Tantalus and November 30th (available for free under my main moniker Photophob on tonAtom), you're most probably going to enjoy this one too.

How To Stop... has been released on autoplate, the gorgeous ambient/experimental sublabel of netlabel-mogul thinner. Wooo-ha! :]

"still warm" can now be ordered from AD NOISEAM, germany. it's available for 13Euro/US$12 (postage excluded) and payment is possible with paypal / in cash in Euro or US$ / in cheque in Euro or bank transfer in Euro (i really like their not-credit-card-only-approach).

here's what they think of "still warm":

"Following a sci-fi minded, more industrial-sounding debut, Photophob's "Still Warm" is a clear turn towards IDM and broken electronic for this austrian project. Possibily influenced by early Warp releases, and ending up sounding quite close to Beefcake (no surprise here), Photophob manages to combine the fast, clear breaks and the pathos-ridden melodies and samples without sounding cheesy or boring, which makes of "Still Warm" a pretty solid and enjoyable album, however beaten the path might be. Nice, and recommended."

well, thanks a lot!
