We will be having a Black Light Art Party on Halloween Night at the Calcasieu Gallery downtown! We will be celebrating a new art exhibit with new art and new artists and will be featuring the art of George Cisneros and Alex Ramirez and are happy to have them on board this opening.
We are particularly excited to have the opportunity to show the work of George Cisneros, an alumni of the San Antoino artists community. Here is a write up about George from his exhibit at Artpace:
"Born in 1951, Cisneros was raised and continues to live and work in San Antonio, TX. He holds a BA in music from the University of Houston and a Masters of Music Composition from Ohio State University. His twenty-year career is highlighted by performances, presentations and installations at international venues including Trinity University in San Antonio, TX; Dallas Museum of Art, TX; Mexic-Arte, Austin, TX; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; and the Festival Internacional de Cultura in Vera Cruz, Mexico."
Along with the work of George and Alex, there will also be new art by members of The Black Light Contingent, so make sure to come out as it promises to be a visualy stunning night!
Join us on Halloween for a night of art, music and social revelry. Come dressed up or as you are and don't forget the event is free. You are welcome to bring your own (fill in the blank). Starts at 8:30 PM until late.

Some shows we've put on:
Black Light Art Party was first held on June 6th, 2007 at Ruta Maya Riverwalk. The night was an arts extravaganza that employed flourescent and black light medium to dazzle its audience. The night was a one night celebration of art. Local electronic acts and artists participated, making the night a strong success. Art was featured by Michael Aaron Casares, Ernest Vidal, Gil Casares, Samo Lee, Valerie Tapia, Melissa Channel Garza and Joselyn Monique.
Black Light Art Party: Transparent Spectacular held on July 4th, 2008 at Ruta Maya Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX was a smashing success! The second year of art celebration in black light mediums: the artists returned to bring you transparent artwork accentuated by the alien glow! What a night! 9 foot paints transparent and 3 dimensional scaled the walls, towered like other worldly edifices that dazzled the audiences! Bands played, Dj's spun, fun was had by all!!! This year's art featured was Michael Aaron Casares, Ernest Vidal, Gil Casares, Mel Channel Garza & Daniel Garcia. Black Light Art Party @ Calcasieu Gallery was held on Saturday July 4th, 2009 and commemorated the national holiday as well as Contemporary Art Month in San Antonio. This year was a round-about show with all variations of black light and UV friendly work from abstract to transparent to contemporary and 3D. This year featured several 12 foot paintings that glowed on flourescent cloth, some art with a patriotic theme for the special holiday. Gallery hours ran 7 to midnight. The Musikbox and Sachsen Apocalpyse provided aural entertainment. This year's artists included Contingent members: Michael Aaron Casares, Gil Casares, Ernest Vidal, Eneida Garcia & Daniel Garcia as well as contributing artists Raul Castellanos and Alyson Alonzo. Black Light Art Party Encore held Saturday Sept. 5, 2009! The Calcasieu opened for another evening of art, music and more. The Black Light Contingent's Labor Day Weekend Bash was a smash hit! Art from the 4th of July extravaganza glowed the night away for one more time! Plus a few new pieces were exhibited by artists: Gil Casares (who also did a textile installation), Ernest Vidal, Eneida Garcia and Alyson Alonzo. Music was performed live by The Sachsen Apocalypse, The Musikbox and DJ Fell. Thanks to everyone who came out for this event!

Hey just thought I'd post an article that was printed in the July 4th edition of 210 SA this year-- you know the one that had Michael Jackson on the cover. I've also provided a link to the website, where it is also posted. Many thanks to Camille Hernandez for the write up! "A new downtown art space will showcase works from a variety of San Antonio artists with a grand opening Black Light Art Party. The Calcasieu Apartments off Broadway will open the Calcasieu Gallery space below on Saturday, July 4, to commemorate Independence Day and Contemporary Art Month. Michael Aaron Casares, a member of the Black Light Contingent, started organizing Black Light Art Parties in 2007 at the now defunct Ruta Maya Riverwalk. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase this exhibit at the Calcasieu Gallery.
“This year's exhibit will follow themes of the Fourth of July holiday as well experimental, abstract, 3-D and contemporary art,” he said.
The back walls in the gallery will be lined with 12-foot fluorescent paintings, and other art forms, such as sculptures and painted glass canvases, will occupy the space. Artist Raul Castellanos, who has been a part of a number of art shows around San Antonio, will be submitting a fluorescent piece featuring a 1950s guitar. Casares encourages those who want to experience the full effect of the show to take a pair of 3D glasses.
This year's event is family oriented. The shows in the past have inspired many, especially children, to try their hand at fluorescent art. “I have some friends whose children have taken to painting. They are going to come dressed up in fluorescent colors,” Casares said. “We also had some people come in last year dressed up. So when they walked in, they glowed. They were officially part of the show.”
Casares hopes the public has some patriotic fun and takes away an appreciation for the fluorescent art form.
The event will also feature live music by local new-wave, experimental bands including The Musikbox, Sachsen and Apocalypse. If you're not able to make it out to the July 4 show, another event is set for July 11 at the Venue, 800 Lexington Ave. Check the Web site or call for more details.
The lights go on when the sun goes down.
