Hello
So it has been a very long time since the last blog was put up, but this one is currently writing itself.
We, as In An Emergency Dial, like most promoters, get a very high amount of messages from bands asking for gigs, asking to be heard and asking for help.
I'm more than up for helping bands out, and doing anything I can to help them out.
However, and i'm sure plenty of other promoters, labels, management and PR types will agree with me when I say - make sure you actually read up on who you're writing to!
If I receive an email saying "Ladies & Gentleman...", not only is it obvious that the band is damn lazy and is chucking emails out left, right and centre without reading up on who they're going out to but there aren't any girls in IAED and plain stupidity like that will earn you a message-deletion, and probable band-deletion straight away.
Read up on who you're writing to first - if you did this to booking agents or Industry contacts, you'd never have a chance with them!
If, however, bands read our page, take a couple minutes to see what we do and that and them email us showing that you actually know a small bit of background about us, then ask us for a bit of help - we're more than happy to give you the time of day and help you with contacts, information or advise.
It's not rocket science!

Another blog article, on our views of some defining features in the Music Industry.
Record Labels
In the last few years, with the arrival and dominance of downloading music (both legally and illegally), the Music Industry has shifted and Major Labels have lost a small amount of power, making them not quite the high entities they once were.
You see. Major Labels have a tendency to give some of the best/biggest bands in the world larger contracts for 3,4,5 album deals - but what happens when they don't receive such a profit from album sales as they once did? What happens when physical sales diminish?
I'm not saying that the Music Industry is falling apart, the Major Labels (such as the Big Four: Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony BMG and Universal Music Group) are still receiving big business and the demand for new music will always be there; my point is their profits have been cut somewhat.
More and more bedroom-run-labels, and small DIY Record Labels are springing up everywhere, going from album-to-album, helping upcoming bands who deserve the help but who are overlooked by the likes of the Big Four.
In my opinion, DIY labels such as..
- Big Scary Monsters - Fierce Pands Records
- Gravity DIP Records - Moshi Moshi - Smalltown America - Xtra Mile Recordings - Transgressive Records
..are some of the most important units in Music today. Okay, so some have a larger budget than others but they're still doing things on a much smaller scale to the Big Four financially, with similar outcomes (if not better).
I know its easy to find songs to download for free illegally, but i'm asking you - for those on smaller labels in particular, use your money and help them continue.
We've released the debut EP from Science vs Romance (myspace.com/sciencevsromancemusic) and if we were to find people downloading it illegally, then, to be honest - we'd just give up as we wouldn't be able to survive.
Bands
As for bands looking for labels, my main advice is to send out as many demos as possible to Labels. If you send out a demo to 3 labels, you've got little to no chance, send a demo to 203 labels and you're more likely to get noticed.
Never give up!
My main advice for bands is persistance. Don't compromise your style/genre and sound of music just to mimic another band. How do you know that the music you're currently making is what the Industry is craving?
Individuality!
If you fancy involvement in our Monthly Podcast, a song of yours played to those who are going to be listening, send one track to inanemergency_dial@hotmail.co.uk with a short biography, and relevant info (MySpace URL for example).
We're determined to change the Music Scene in Norwich for the better, so get involved and help us do BIG things!

We're doing these article blogs to give an insight into our thoughts and ideas about some key issues with upcoming bands.
We've had a lot of experience between us but obviously our word isn't always gospel - it's just our opinions.
Venues
When looking to play a gig in another city/town, or even in your own - you need to do some research to really make it worth your time.
In Norwich (and i'm sure it's the same in other towns and cities) it is extremely easy to hire one of many venues and host a gig there with little to no hassle.
B2, Queen Charlotte, The Marquee, The Alibi, The Cricketers Rest (and many more) all offer a friendly service, soundguys and are reputable venues for live music.
It is vital to have the right bands on your bill if you are trying to attract a large audience (and lets face it, you are).
You need to get the right balance of local favourites, touring bands and friends' bands in order to bring people in.
From my experience, gigswaps are an easy and excellent way of getting gigs outside of your county and getting upcoming bands on a gig lineup is simple.
If you have a lineup of 4 bands including 1 upcoming/unknown band from afar, get local bands on the bill, get them to bring their friends and give them an incentive.
We don't host shows to make money, we do this for our reputation and to bring good live bands to Norfolk!
Tell bands to bring friends and to help spread the word. Give them flyers to hand out and as a promoter, do the same.
You'll only get the audience that your promotion deserves.
If you host a show and have just told a few people then you don't deserve a large crowd, but if you've flyered, spread the word verbally and online, and done everything possible - then 9 times out of 10, you will get a large crowd in.
If you're an upcoming promoter, start small and work your way up.
We'd be happy to answer any questions on being a promoter or tips on how to produce a successful gig.
And on top of all of that, you need to remember that if you have a poor turnout for 1 show, the next show could be your best, so don't give up.
You need to learn to take the good with the bad!
We went from a turnout of about 20-30 for one gig, to nearly 200 at our next!
Keep checking back for more article updates :)

We've had a lot of experience between us but obviously our word isn't always gospel - it's just our opinions.
Merchandise & Self Releases
seeing your favourite band live, and seeing a wealth of merchandise (from badges and t-shirts to rare EPs and vinyls) you might want to recreate such goodies with your own band, but sometimes - it's just not the time to be forking out for prints and recording sessions.
Early on in a bands life, it is nice to have a couple tracks as demos to show new listeners what your sound is like, but to produce a debut EP, or a self-release it is wise to gain a decent sized fanbase to sell them too.
There are so many bands, especially in Norwich, who after playing less than 15 shows have a variety of T-shirts, albums, badges and stickers for sale; and despite them maybe being sold over a long timeline, my advice is to keep merch minimal.
Albums are for fans who want to listen to your music or for sending to Labels, Promoters, A&R guys and Venues - fair do's, you can probably get these quite early on, but with bands taking time to find their "true sound", what you record now, might be totally different and unplayed live in a couple of months.
Should you feel that its the right time to get some merch or release some music, it could be a good idea to make a limited amount of them, wait for them to sell out and then reorder some, rather than getting a batch of 500 and possibly never selling all of it thus wasting your money and wasting efforts.
I know bands are keen to have that side of things, and how amazing it must be to see someone wearing your t-shirts, but Merch and Recordings are big money, so be careful not to waste the opportunity!

With hundreds of bands trying to break the mould, trying to claim fans and gain glory, not to mention sell out shows and record deals, its very hard to find the diamonds in the rough as a promoter.
As a band, I can imagine it being quite the struggle to stand out with so much competition, so we've devised a little blog with our views, our advice and knowledge of the industry for the bands...
Gigs
As a promoter, we get hundreds of messages from bands wanting shows, and despite being extremely grateful and flattered for such popularity, it becomes increasingly hard to find the right bands for the right gigs.
We do our best to give upcoming bands opportunities with more established acts when we booked them.
For us, bands must be determined, hardworking and smart about their music, about getting gigs and their approach to the whole encounter.
I've heard endless amount of bands moaning about not having shows or about poor turnouts, but at the end of the day - can you really say you did enough to warrant a sell out show?
For example, you have a show in a months time - our advice would be to produce flyers and hand out as many as possible in the city, and at the venue where your show is to be held. If its a similar genre of music, it is the perfect opportunity to gain some fans and new friends!
After all, there is no point going to a death metal gig to flyer if you're an Indie-Pop band!
If however, you haven't got shows, then why not get together with another band, hire out a venue for a night (Most 100-200 capacity venues in Norwich are free to hire) and promote it heavily.
The lineup for a gig can make or break a show. Never underestimate the power of local bands, especially those with a popular fanbase. Getting bands from across the UK is a great way to gain contacts, and to gigswap but if you don't have bands that people have heard of, why would they bother making the effort?
I always think 1 band from outside of Norfolk with 2 or 3 local bands is fair. Of course, when it comes to larger bands, you can get away with less local bands (should you want to) if the "pulling band" (headliner) is big enough.
Never underestimate the power of a gigswap. If you give a band from London a gig and you're in Norwich, the chances are, they could pop you on a show elsewhere (outside of Norfolk) thus getting 2 gigs for the price of 1!
The main thing is to work extremely hard at promoting shows and proving you've got the fanbase to deserve a show. It can be very tough, but if you're determined and if you put the time and effort in, you will reap the rewards!
As a promoter, we try and listen out for upcoming bands, and give bands the chance to play but even we can make the odd mistake.
Hell, about 2 or 3 years ago, Elliot Minor asked us for a show which we never got sorted, and now they're selling out 1000+ capacity venues up and down the country.
Its tough keeping an eye on upcoming acts, but when things go right, it's an amazing feeling!
Thanks for reading!
We're hosting Data.Select.Party at the Norwich B2 on the 2nd November and are looking for 2-3 local (Norfolk) bands to support them.
We're looking for bands with a decent little fanbase, or bands who can bring a load of friends along for the show.
If you impress us, you're more than likely to feature on future shows!
Reply to this blog on your bands profile if you're interested and we'll start listening to those interested.

So you want a gig in Norwich?
This blog serves as a guide to touring bands outside of Norwich who want to play in the city through tours and the like. Its not an exhaustive list, so promoters and venues in this region, get in touch if you would like to be added and we'll update this as we go. I'd like to mention that Power Up Promotions have done similar so make sure you check them out at myspace.com/poweruppromotions They're very good!
Venues
Norwich has a large number of venues throughout the city with varying sizes and qualities. As I say, this isn't an exhausted list so get in touch if you think you deserve to be on here. City Centre venues include:
B2, 496 Sprowston Road, Norwich, NR3 4DY (01603) 441118 myspace.com/b2venue b2venue.com
Capacity: 200
The venue is 14+ for all genres besides Metal/Screamo which is 18+
We've done several shows here and they're all been smooth from start to finish and we can't speak highly enough of the staff who have always been magic to us!
Unfortunately, The Queen Charlotte recently stopped putting gigs on due to noise complaints from nearby neighbours. It is a wonderful pub all the same and Kev and the staff are wonderful so go have a drink there if you get the chance!
Norwich Arts Centre, St. Benedicts Street, Norwich, NR2 4PG (01603) 660387 myspace.com/norwichartscentre norwichartscentre.co.uk
Capacity: 290
Other Venues: (Message us if you want your venue added)

The Brickmakers, 496 Sprowston Road, Norwich, NR3 4DY myspace.com/thebrickmakers thebrickmakers.com

I hope that helps so far, by all means let us know if you would like to be added or if I have placed you under the wrong genre.
For bands looking to play, the promoters sometimes host numerous genres so don't take this as 100% factual.
I urge you to find bands in the area and gigswap to help our bands get out of Norfolk and for you to get into Norfolk. It does work, just make friends and take the time to sort something out - you'll end up with two gigs for the price of one!
Please leave your comments below if you find this useful, if you like it or if you have something to add!
Thanks!

Waking up in Portugal this morning, on the final day of my two week break and its been nothing but glorious sunshine, incredible sunsets, gentle breezes and daily swims. Not to mention a lovely visit to see some dolphins at the same attraction that includes rollercoasters...
Driving from our villa to the aeroporto in the big gay "baby blue" bubble that was the Nissan Micra (with a touch of pink) the clouds began to loom, almost in preparation for our flight home - it was still 8am though and it turned out that they cleared and yet another day was to follow.
The plane home was turbulent but bearable, and we had quite the picnic on the plane with delightful delights spending up the last of our unchangeable-change.
Wheels touch the ground, as the breeze pushes us around, an air of excitement to be back in Britain, the doors open and what welcomes us... Rain.
Welcome Home.
Latest
We've got a lovely batch of shows coming up in the next few months featuring a ridiculous amount of the best upcoming bands and we would love to have your support for the shows we have.
We're still looking for one band to fill the September 22nd slot so those of you who have entered the blog, check back on it soon! Pin Stripe Knight are the first band to enter the remaining slots which also feature headliners The Departure Lounge and Newcastle based upcomers Fall Short! Conform! destined for great things!
We like getting new upcoming, local bands on our bills. If you impress us, we will typically take you under our highly colourful wing and help you in your endeavours. You work hard for us, we work hard for you.
Check out the Dates in the Calendar section.
In other news, during my departure, it seems that the Queen Charlotte is open again? Don't hold me to any of this but from what the lovely punters of Norwichdarkside.co.uk (a forum site that anyone in Norwich and who likes Music should be on) have informed me, I hear its open and bands are still playing there.
Its a little untidy, credit, but do your best to check out the bands that are playing the Charlotte and get in touch with your friendly neighbourhood promoter for where there shows are being played, in particular Woody (Safetydance), Mike (from Pennines) and Ian (Power Up Promotions).
We've got a tasty list of Norwich promoters at This Link for any band wanting a gig in Norwich or just curious as to shows coming up. Please do your bit for the Norwich Music Scene and catch some local shows - it will only help the City in the long run!

Podcast
Don't forget to check out This Link with regards to our forthcoming Podcast which we're looking to record soon. We're waiting to get a healthy number of tracks sent in before we kick preceedings off and we've very chuffed with the tracks so far, but being the greedy music-craving addicts that we are, we're asking you to smuggle and send us your hits.
And Finally...
Please spread the word about us to your friends if you would be as so kind. We just want to help the Norwich Music Scene as well as bringing bands from around the UK in. We want to get people involved and make Norwich in demand, and contain it as one of the most thriving and exciting places in the UK.
If ever you've got something to say, a gig to promote or anything, just reply to a blog and tell us what you think. We like to hear what you think about what we're doing, about the bands we're hosting and anything really, especially to do with music!
Things have been so exciting this year so far and I for one have met so many lovely people thanks to music. I just hope that we can continue hosting exciting upcoming bands, help new bands out and gain more exposure as a duo who just really likes music and wants to do some good!
If you could just post a bulletin with our URL myspace.com/inanemergencydial and get people to have a look, to add and to get involved, you would be doing so much for us and really would love you for it.
There are plenty of great bands in our top friends for you to take a look at, and all you promoters across the UK, get in touch - we're always up for telling you of good tours that we've heard of if you fancy it?
Until next time... (where my tan will most probably have gone)

Monthly In An Emergency Dial Podcast
We're currently planning the recording of the very first monthly podcast that we're aiming to get going religiously in the next few weeks.
The aim of the Podcast is to get upcoming music to your ears by bands that you might not necessarily listen to, as well as the usual IAED favourites, touring bands and bigger acts. Not to mention all the latest news, gig information and a few interviews hurled in too!
Our aim is to have a tidy 30 minute podcast ready to download via itunes or a downloadable source from our MySpace 4 weeks from now depending on how easy the process is.
So we're asking for your songs to be sent in, to be possibly played during the podcast. If you fancy having your song included and heard by whomever downloads the podcast then:
- Please send one track to inanemergency_dial@hotmail.co.uk - Please include a short bio of your band and any relevant info about the track - Include your MySpace URL and a few upcoming dates
Unfortunately, we won't be able to play everyones music but the beauty is, if we have it on file, we can use it in the months to come.
We're also getting in touch with Clothing Company friends of ours to see if they can give us some giveaways to "giveaway" in the form of a competition.
Please let us know your thoughts on this by commenting the blog below, and also comment us if you've sent a track in so others can check you out.
A quick thanks to the 178 of you who came to our Bombay Bicycle Club show on Thursday at the Norwich Arts Centre. What a success!
All the Best

Friends, Times New Romans and country bumpkins, lend me your ears...
So after cringing over hearing my own voice on BBC Radio Norfolk around 7.30 on Friday night (but being proud of their production of the segment) and seeing sniggers from my beautiful girlfriend (can you blame her?), I get to bed early for the following days 7am wakeup call.
(NOTE: If you want to listen to the piece you can at bbc.co.uk/norfolk, click on Listen Again and then onto BBC Norfolk Introducing - its available until Friday 15th August and i'm .. 30 mins exactly)
Rolling out of bed come Saturday, I had an air of excitement, knowing that once i'd made myself respectable, once I got myself to Norwich, once myself and my 4 counterparts had met and boarded the minibus that Dan gracefully drove up (NB. 2 chevrons Dan, 2!) and once we finally found the Face Bar snuck away from passerbys once we'd rounded roundabouts numerous times, we were finally at Rapturefest.
I've been meaning to get to the Face Bar in Reading for quite some time, especially to see The Defeat (myspace.com/thedefeatuk) boys prior to their hiatus. It really is a quaint venue so Reading folk - be proud! If only Norwich had a place like that!
It really was a pleasure to be there! The day flew by after incredible band after incredible band hit the stage and repeatedly ripped my bollocks off with their talent. We were first to meet Caesura (myspace.com/caesuraband) who we were originally going to put on in March and who turned out to claim the award for loveliest guys of the day. Their performance was fucking amazing, and for the first band on, it really was a clear indication that the promoters have impeccable taste!

I'm so excited to have Caesura in Norwich on 17th September alongwith Colour (more on them later), Secondsmile (myspace.com/secondsmile) and Fun!Yeah! (myspace.com/funyeah). Check them out - their live show is wonderful!
The lineup changed numerous times from the original printout. Bands like The Attika State, Norwich boys Pennines, The Defeat, Mirror! Mirror! (and possible more) were all missing but we were in for a treat for the bands who remained and reclaimed their positions.
Firstly, Colour (myspace.com/colouruk) and Blakfish (myspace.com/blakfish) are undoubtedly the 2 biggest upcoming bands in Music at the moment. Despite the audience struggling to hit the 5-0 mark for the entire event, everyone was in place when these 2 bands hit the stage. Colour have got to have the biggest opportunity in bridging the gap between commercial Indie-pop and the underground math-rock following, and with the backing of Xtra Mile and Primary International Booking they are sure to make huge waves in the Music scene.

I had the pleasure of having a long chinwag with Sam of Blakfish after meeting his acquaintance when we hosted them with the now defunct Meet Me In St. Louis (myspace.com/meetmeinstlouis) back in February. Those guys (BF) have gone from strength to strength and everytime i've seen them they've given 110% whether they play in front off 1000 or 10 people. They hurtle around the stage playing such technical, powerful music and they deserve even more credit than they're already getting. Their 3 track EP ("Gold") is constantly playing in my car and with their recent release of their latest EP "See You In Another City" (Buy Here) thats on my shopping list and I think you should purchase it too!
Unfortunately i'm running out of time (not to live... don't worry i'm fine!) so I can't give an in depth review but all I can say is that I enjoyed every band who played at Rapturefest so go take a peek over at myspace.com/rapturepromotions and share your love for a promoter who has worked hard in putting together an incredible bill!
As well as the safe lineup, it was a grand pleasure to meet so many people there. Especially seeing those I knew of but had never had the pleasure of talking to (Kirk, Ivano, Lewis and the Caesura boys). We well fancy doing something like this in Norwich so if you fancy it, and want to get involved, leave a comment and share the love!

It's but a matter of days now until our debut at the Norwich Arts Centre as we host the talented Bombay Bicycle Club (myspace.com/bombaybicycleclub) as they release their latest single "Evening/Morning".
Tickets are still available in advance from the Norwich Arts Centre for £7 but be quick, we've already slogged through 100+ of them and if you're to buy them on the door, its a quid more and there's the possibility of them running out!
Really would appreciate having your support there on Thursday (14th August) as it's such a momentous day for us and yet another landmark we have reached. Be sure to get there for 8PM as local talents (and very close friends of IAED's) Battlements take to the stage soon after 8 with their Foals-esque sound and winning attributes which will win you over in an instant only for it to be their last show for the time being. Main support comes from Halfway Hero (myspace.com/halfwayheroband) who are a wonderful band recently brought to my attention. And they'll be getting my full undivided attention when they hit the stage come Thursday (see what I did there!).

Myself & Dan are currently sorting out our first ever Podcast and will be recording it soon! We're going to do our best in playing the best upcoming bands as well as signed bands, friends music and anyone we've got booked up for upcoming shows. We want to basically get people involved, and the podcast will be downloaded off itunes or from a downloadable source on MySpace.
Our main aim to get upcoming music heard and to have fun at the same time. No doubt we'll get visiting friends and bands to record some special titbits to spank onto the podcast and we'll post out a call for your music should you be in a band nearer the time.
It's a very exciting prospect and we hope you enjoy the idea and hopefully get involved with it. We're planning on giving away some merch and that from friends of ours, clothing labels and the like - if you have something you'd like to contribute, then get in touch!
You'll be pleased to know you've reached the end of the blog, which just leaves me to say thank you for reading through all this and it would mean a lot if you would subscribe to our blogs, just so we know who reads it and you'll basically get told once we've spanked something up worthy of reading. If you fancy that, then please just findle the button below.
Until next time beautiful people...

Good eve' fine folk!
It's been a great day for us today! In fact... the last month or so has been pretty damn good it has to be said!
We've been working our bums off to secure some of the best bands in new music at the moment and it really is an exciting time for IAED.
On The Radio
This Friday between 7 and 8 on BBC Radio Norfolk, I (Sunny) feature on the show with a short interview with the presenters explaining our promotions, namedropping a few bands and talking about the Norwich scene in general.
I'm not sure how it's going to sound but it really would mean a lot if you could tune in and have a listen. My gut feeling is that it will feature early on in the show, but should you miss it, you can capitilize on their infamous "Listen again" function and... "listen again" anytime after the show is finished for a week.
We'll be playing a couple of tracks so take a listen - you never know you might learn something or hear your new favourite band!
Bombay Bicycle Club
Our next show, on Thursday 14th August features popular London hardworkers Bombay Bicycle Club (myspace.com/bombaybicycleclub) at the Norwich Arts Centre. We're so proud to be hosting the boys in a gig which is undoubtedly one of the biggest we've done and, our first at the Arts Centre.
The tour which BBC are currently embarking on is to promote the release of their latest single "Evening/Morning" which is sure-as-hell-catchy and is accompanied by a classic video which can be seen HERE
Support kicks off with our boys Battlements, a new band, mysteriously emerging but a band who you will undeniably see playing shows across the UK. They have yet to have a MySpace profile or any music up, and although you will just have to take our word for it until they play live, they will be recording material in the next month or two so make sure you catch them on first on the 14th yeah?
Main support comes from Norwich boys Halfway Hero (myspace.com/halfwayheroband). This band seems to have slipped under the IAED radar but tapping on on their first of 2 tracks (Wolves) on their profile, you will hear a very well developed young group who know how to craft a good song, know how to get people dancing and who’s beguiling music sounds like they have taken all the positives from the likes of Bloc Party and The Strokes and creating an appealing amalgamation of song
On The Road
This Saturday, Dan & I will be trecking to Reading, England with a carfull to the incredible Rapturefest event that is taking place at the Face Bar. The lineup couldn't actually be any better I don't think, and includes:
The Maple State myspace.com/themaplestate Blakfish myspace.com/blakfish Colour myspace.com/colouruk Capitals myspace.com/weareincapitals Haemostatic Picnic Races myspace.com/hprtheband Shapes myspace.com/weareshapes Shield Your Eyes myspace.com/leavethetapesrunning Mirror! Mirror! myspace.com/mirror Pennines myspace.com/pennines Tubelord myspace.com/tubelord Caesura myspace.com/caesuraband
So yeah, we should have 5 of us in the car motoring to Reading for the event and I really cannot wait! Really looking forward to meeting up with old friends, The Defeat boys (pending they're there to watch), Kirk, Colour, Tubelord, Pennines, The Maple State, Blakfish, Shield Your Eyes and all the bands we've worked with and people we know.
It really is a wonderful event and I have such admiration for Rapture Parties for putting it on. If you're around London/Reading and you like your music, come down and hang - really is going to be one of the highlights on the music calendar in my eyes!
Photo Opportunity
As part of all the new exciting things coming up (see below), we'll be having a photoshoot with our boy Ben Piper (myspace.com/benpiperphotography) and as well as the simply shots of myself and Dan, we're going to be invited as many of you as we can fit in one place for some snaps!
Just a bit of a fun, lots of pictures and a chance to meet some new people I guess. We'll blog more about it but basically, if you like the sound of it and fancy being in a photo around the Norwich area then comment this blog and let us know!
Although things are based in Norwich at the moment, we will be getting around the UK more and more in the coming months! Keep your eyes safely-glued-but-with-regular-breaks-to-stop-retinal-damage to our profile and blogs for all the latest info!
Shhh!... Secret Squirrel
We've got SO much good stuff coming up! We'll be announcing one part of it this Friday on the Radio (please take a listen and comment your thoughts) but we're going to unravel the other gems in the next month or so.
We've been busy boys on the booking front...
Please comment the blog if you've read it just to let us know that there is a point to all this, and get in touch if you fancy a chat as always!
Until next time
Sunny x
