We're still rocking our History of Hip-Hop series on Brooklyn Radio but we got so many downloads that we crashed their server and they are moving to one with more bandwidth. Please tune in later in the week for DJ Eleven's excellent 1997 show. Sunday, February 24 Putting the Beatnuts on our History of Hip-Hop postcard for 1997 is sort of like when the academy awarded Scorsese the Oscar for The Departed. Sure, the Beatnuts finally scored a radio hit with Off The Books in 1997, but by then hip-hop fans had been bumping them for years! But of course in the late 1990s it had only started to become possible for underground rappers to get big radio hits. It was an incredibly exciting time for hip-hop: lyricism was still in fashion but money rap was popping off as well, the whole East Coast vs West Coast war was cooling off after the murders of Tupac and Notorious BIG, meanwhile No Limit and Cash Money were rising to the top down South and the Fat Beats indy movement was providing a space for terrific alternatives to commercial rap. But let's hear DJ Eleven tell the story through records! Stream Podcast Download Saturday, February 23 New Cosmo Baker mix free for download! "Back in the days there used to be a certain formula to doing albums - meaning there were distinctive types of records that you just had to put on your album. There was the single, the rap for the girls, the club (or hip-house) jam, the DJ cut, the slow jam, the reminisce record, the shout out dedication song at the end of the record, the list goes on and on. But for the record my favorite type of record was the posse cut. This was the record where the artist would invite some of his boys to drop verses on a song, and the end result ended up sounding like the best rap party ever. Sometimes it was a crazy combination of rappers that you would never think would even bless the same city, much less the mic. Sometimes it would end up being the jump start to a legendary career. Whatever it would be, the posse cut always brought the fire. Here is a collection of some of my favorite posse cuts of all time. The initial list I had was much longer but in the end I had to trim it down. I had to make sure that (for the most part) the entire song played on this mix - I didn't want to leave anyone out. So here it is - let's go!" - CB download tracklist Thursday, February 21 New DJ Ayres on GAMM records straight out of Sweden! Cop the vinyl at Turntable Lab and fine record stores all over the US and Europe. Preview the track here: James Brown - Give It Up Or Turn It Loose (DJ Ayres Remix) REAL AUDIO Tuesday, February 19 1996 is up! Stream Podcast Download I was truly psyched about doing 1996 because that was a very special year for me and it had a lot of impact. I had just moved back to Philly from New York (proving, at least for the time being, that nobody moves away from New York - they just "fail.") I was back in my hometown with no prospects and really nothing going for me. Over the past 18 months I had been living in New York and had been working in Eightball Records, fully involved in the downtown hip-hop scene. 1995 was such a good year for hip-hop (especially the New York-centric type) and I was at the epicenter of it all. Now I didn't really know what to do with myself. I had resumed classes at Temple and then got a job at Armand's records. Before I knew it was at the middle of it again and, for the first time in a while, independent records really started to make a lot of noise. Being a buyer at Armand's definitely helped with that, and I got the chance to get my hands on pretty much all this new shit that nobody had heard of. I started to deal with Peanut Butter Wolf (he was still just a buyer at TRC Distribution in California) so I would get all this crazy California myspace shit. Then, I re-linked up with my man Jared and started to help him with his record label, Illadelph Records. I went from being a "soundboard" for ideas for him to a semi A&R status to one of the in-house producers and a member of the Militant Mind State very shortly. I also started to DJ again in Philly. The last residency I had was with King Britt and Dozia at Back To Basics but I left that behind. But I started again with a Monday night at Cafe Limbo playing all sorts of myspace shit as well as funk and whatnot. Before I knew it, I got a call about a new club opening up, The Palmer, and they wanted me to spin there. I went from 1 night a week 2 5 within a couple months. So yeah, 1996 was a year or rebirth for me. It was also a very good year in music. This mix was a labor of love but it was particularly hard for me to do, in particular because there was so much great stuff that came out that year that I wanted to put on. It was so hard to pick and choose what to use from "Stakes is High," "Reasonable Doubt," "All Eyes On Me," "ATLiens," "The Coming," "Beats, Rhymes & Life," "Endtroducing," "Riding Dirty" - the list goes on and on. And that's not even including the myspace shit. So I hope I did this year justice. Also, 1996 was the year that Dilla REALLY made an impact on me. It was '96 that I said to myself "This motherfucker right here is the REAL DEAL." Anyways, with that, I present 1996. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it!" - Cosmo Baker Sunday, February 17 Cosmo Baker goes out on the road this weekend with Brand Nubian! The shows are free in Austin, Houston, Atlanta and North Carolina. Click here for mandatory RSVPS. Friday, February 15 We got an interview with the Iron Man aka Tony Starks aka Pretty Tony from the Group Home plus Cosmo spinning an hour of all Wu-Tang, Eleven running through a ton of new dancehall and me playing a gang of new hip-hop and classic funk. Yall should know the deal by now: streaming 24/7, no downloads (sorry), up for a month or so then we got a new show coming featuring the young Catchapotomus. Listen Wednesday, February 13 1995 is up! What's good, y'all. We're back at it again, and I'm pleased to say that we've picked up our "History Of Hip-Hop" series again this year. We started the series with 1979 and took you on a journey though the first decade of hip-hop as seen through the eyes of The Rub. In no way is this to be considered a "Best Of" but more of a collection of personal favorites and songs that we feel really represented the year properly. But guaranteed you will be getting some of the best hip-hop songs ever created. And so with no further hestiation, let's get to it! Stream at BrooklynRadio.net / Download (Right Click "Save Target As") Go to our Radio Page to download the first 11 years of Hip-Hop History, from 1979 - 1989.

Whattup? For those of you who might not know, The Rub does our weekly internet radio show Rub Radio brought to you exclusively by BrooklynRadio.net. This week's mix is a 60+ minute tribute to one of hip-hop's greatest producers, Mt. Vernon's one and only chocolate boy wonder, Pete Rock Pete is arguably one of the most influential musicians of hip-hop and I have a sincere love for the music this guy has done, and the sound he singlehandedly created, so I made a mix featuring some of my favorite recordings and productions of his. Friday, September 14 New Vinyl - The Rub Party Medleys Vol 1 Eleven and I were djing together on two turntables in Boston a few months ago and we were going back and forth a lot and we started running out of options for real vinyl to play while switching computers. I said "somebody should make a record for switching computers, one record that never leaves your bag, with stuff everyone plays, at a bunch of different tempos." This is what we came up with, four party medleys on one EP. The one record for Serato DJs that never leaves your bag. The 6 minute medleys are linked with quick 2 bar acapella skits so you can play each side for 12-13 minutes through if you need to, say if your computer crashes or you have to run to the bathroom. The songs are quick mixed, playing for about a verse and a chorus each, with no fancy West Coast production extras (sorry LA hip-hop dudes), just regular NYC quick mix party style. If this sells well, we'll be doing more like it with different types of music. A1. 80s Medley listen (Prince - Kiss, Michael Jackson - Billie Jean, Rolling Stones - Miss You, Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That) ~ 112 BPM A2. Download / Stream / Track List A few years ago Milk Bar in San Francisco approached me and Nick about setting up a rotating residency - every month would be me or Nick plus a special guest, so for example Nick and Low-Bee one month, me and Paul Nice the next, Nick and Morse Code the next, and so on. We threw around a few ideas for themes and I came up with Super Friends, and Nick liked it because it meant he could flip comic book covers on the flyers, and he came up with a super hot logo. We went out and DJed the first party and it went well. Milk liked the name and flyer concept so much they decided to make Super Friends a weekly, with resident DJ Vin Sol. Nick continued to design the Super Friends flyers but our monthly residency wasn't to be. It's all love though. I'll be back out at Milk in October for the first time in almost two years to DJ at Morse Code's CD release party. Nick and I have been talking about doing a mix CD together for a long time, and when we finally got our shit together, the vibe we agreed on was dance rock records - some new wave, some punk, some newer electro shit. We did it as Super Friends because even though we aren't as involved in the party as we originally planned to be, we did come up with a hot concept and Vin Sol and Morse Code are our people and were into it. Another person I have to acknowledge is Scott from Ten Deep - he and I were planning on doing a rock mixtape, but we're both so busy all the time it never came together. I got a few of these records from him when we were planning the Ten Deep mixtape. So here it is finally, enjoy.

Tuesday, July 31 I was out on tour opening for Ghostface all last week. It was a little bit of a challenge because I didn't play any dirty south hip-hop, house, club, 80s or whatever else I'm used to playing, but I had fun with real schitt hip-hop and classic soul and reggae. It's pretty awesome getting a room full of backpackers to sing along to Gloria Jones "Tainted Love." Ghost at Highline Ballroom in NY, photo by Ian Meyer - prints for sale at Crewcial.org. (more pictures here). Cappadonna killed it with those long breathless verses from Winter Wars and Daytona 500. When he's 48 bars in and still going the crowd just loses it. Rhythm Roots Allstars unloading from the bus. These dudes kill it live, staying faithful to the original Ghostface instrumentals and freaking shit like Nautilus, No No No and La La Means I Love You. The old guy is our bus driver; he's normally the driver for Good Charlotte. My bunk on the bus is the size of a coffin but has its own DVD / CD / radio player. Scion puts us up in four star hotels but we don't even sleep there. To get from St Louis to Minneapolis for example we had to leave at like 3 AM so the hotel was just a really expensive place to shower and change clothes after the show. Mike the 2600 King showed me around Minneapolis and took me to the Burlesque Design studios. Wezz and Mike were printing MF Doom posters. Kid Sister & Sam brought me cupcakes for my birthday in Chicago! Monday, July 23 Our first magazine cover! Saturday, July 21 The Rub European tour is going swimmingly, thanks for asking! Just one day left then we'll be home for a couple of days. I have to say the highlight so far was playing with Sinden, Switch, Kool Keith and South Rakkas crew at Fabric. So nuts! Sinden, me & Dow Jones of South Rakkas Crew Switch More pictures soon-ish. Eleven and I won't be back in time for McCarren Pool Party Saturday so Cosmo is holding it down along with Kennan & Mikey Palms so go! I'll be at Highline Ballroom Monday with Ghostface but I think the RSVPs are already full up. But in the meantime check out the video for Escort's "All Through The Night." Monday, July 16 Polaroids from The Rub up on IThinkYoureSwell.com Wednesday, July 11 Be sure to check out the newly redesigned Brooklyn Radio. The Rub's weekly show is now available as a podcast! This week we put up me and DJ Soul's best of Ghostface mix, Chamber Music! I have some tour dates coming up at the end of the month with Ghostface: Monday, July 23 Ghostface Killah / DJ Ayres 431 West 16th Street Highline Ballroom, NYC free! rsvp here Wednesday, July 25 Ghostface Killah / DJ Ayres 6504 Delmar Blvd Blueberry Hill, St Louis free! rsvp here Thursday, July 26 Ghostface Killah / DJ Ayres 1308 4th Street SE Varsity Theater, Minneapolis free! rsvp here Friday, July 27 Ghostface Killah / DJ Ayres 3730 N. Clark Street The Metro, Chicago free! rsvp here stream / podcast (weekly MP3 downloads) / buy the CD Be sure to check out the homies Wale and Nick Catchdubs on their brand new mixtape: Download Monday, July 9 The Rub 5 Year Anniversary at Southpaw, July 2007 More pictures from The Rub anniversary, by Drink Moloko Monday, July 2 Music you should buy: DJ Ayres, Tittsworth, DJ Eli, A-Trak & Bamabounce Ultimate T&A is the new EP on me and Tittsworth's label. It's all Baltimore Club remixes of funky 70s jams from the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Jimmy Castor Bunch and more. DJ Too Tuff - The Wreckshop Mix (Look for the Buy Now button under About DJ TOO TUFF on the right side) Listen: http://www.zshare.net/audio/2469873300b099/ Cosmo wrote a page in Wax Poetics about a Tuff Crew 12" about a year and a half ago and their DJ, Too Tuff, got in touch with him and came to see us play with A-Trak in Philly. Since then he's started to make a comeback. Dude was a really innovative DJ in the 80s and this mixtape, made in 2007 but featuring mostly raer hip-hop from the late 80s / early 90s, is fucking phenomenal. I don't know most of the music on here but it's all really really good. Neighborhood Romeo EP Listen: http://www.turntablelab.com/assets/audio/20936/178884.ram This is an EP of Disco edits by Smalltown Romeo aka Wax Romeo aka Neighborhood Romeo and it's on some Metro Area 2007 shit, sort of reminds me of some of the stuff Eli is doing. Sinden & The Count of Monte Cristal - Beeper 12" Listen: http://www.turntablelab.com/assets/audio/20933/178952.ram I've been playing this one everytime I DJ for the last 4 months or so. For my money it's the best song of the year so far. Drugs, Drugs, Drugs, Drugs. Speaker Junk - Foxxy 12"Listen Trevor Loveys (1/2 of Speaker Junk, formerly 1/2 of Switch) is playing with me and Walter Meego and James Fucking Friedman at Hiro Ballroom this Tuesday July 3rd at Kurrupt aka The Rave Pt 2. Foxxy is a fairly straight ahead house remix for Jimi Hendrix "Foxy Lady" but it's a fucking workhorse. Such a perfect breakdown. If you dig the wobbly house stuff, Organ Grinder (Loveys & Sinden) dropped last week and it's pretty crazy too. Friday, June 22 Cosmo just dropped a new summer mix called Feeling Good. Download that for free here. I'm in Montreal and DJ Eleven is in Texas this weekend but there are a bunch of things going on in NY including the first McCarren Park Pool Party, outdoors and free in Williamsburg / Greenpoint. We're djing at four of the parties this summer starting July 8, and the lineups are all great. Check the whole schedule here. -Ayres Wednesday, June 20 New 3 hour Rub Radio streaming on Scion's broadband internet radio. On future shows, we'll have interviews with Ghostface, Chromeo, A-Trak, Andy Smith, Jazzy Jeff and a whole lot more! New Press: The Rub in Envy Magazine Ayres and Tittsworth in Swedish Paper Monday, June 18 Scandinavia was really nuts. The Rumble in Malmo in particular was just an incredible party - I don't think I've ever seen that many people go nuts to Baltimore Club in my life. To give you an idea, the biggest song of the night was DJ Class "Stop Snitching!" All the parties were great - shout out to Sampo in Helsinki, Jaywalker crew in Oslo, Jonny and Sanna, Saurabh and my man Stefan in Stockholm and of course Sweet Fred and the Discobelle crew in Malmo. Tittsworth murdered it everywhere we went, and I just tried to keep up! We literally didn't sleep at night the whole time we were there, just a few afternoon naps to battle the 21+ hours of daylight everyday. Helsinki photos here, more photos coming. So now I'm home playing catch up for a few days, then heading up to Montreal on Friday. Saturday, June 9 Still going on the old tapes! Here is a classic Big L tribute mix from Radio 1 in 1999. Max Glazer (Federation) on the mix, Tim Westwood on the mic. Big L was an incredible rapper and was just about to blow up when he was killed. I was always a huge DITC fan growing up and I felt like Big L really took the styles pioneered by Lord Finesse to another level. It really hurt when he was murdered, it felt like losing a friend. Especially because, as Max said, Big L was a genuinely good person on top of being a great artist. Big L R.I.P. Thursday, June 7 Ayres & Tittsworth on MTV in Canada YouTube link / Daily Motion link Ayres & Tittsworth mixin it up for Discobelle (free download) Ayres and Tittsworth live in Sweden, Finland and Norway next week Saturday, June 2 More Kid Sister pictures, this time by Scott Furkay. Also - The Rub is tonight! With Haul & Mason! Get there early (11ish) to avoid a long line. Wednesday, May 30 Photos from Shirts and Skins (The Rub & Kid Sister) by Ian Meyer More photos from Shirts and Skins, by Ward Tuesday, May 29 PF Cuttin - Da 4 Oh (download side a) (download side b) I'm gonna keep putting up old tapes as I have free time. This is one of my favorites, from PF Cuttin. He is the dj and producer for Blahzay Blahzay (any hip-hop head worth his salt remembers the mid-nineties hit "Danger" "when the East is in the house, oh my god, danger!"). Anyhow I don't have the cover anymore but this must have come out in 1997 because he starts it off with an exclusive from Wu-Tang Clan's second album. PF Cuttin is a beast with the doubles but he was also really ahead of his time with the drops and effects. Most DJs then weren't putting that much work in on mixtapes. I assume this was recorded with a digital hard disc recorder and not a computer - I don't think many DJs were using Pro Tools to record mixes yet since most computers didn't really have enough memory. Monday, May 28 I run myself ragged touring and working all the time but then something big will come along and make me realize it's all paying off. This summer I'll be playing shows with Ghostface Killah, TV on the Radio, MIA, DJ Drama, Peedi Crakk and a bunch of other performers I look up to. The Rub is doing Fabric in July, which has been a goal for a really long time. I was interviewed on MTV Live in Canada with Tittsworth, The Rub just shot our first magazine cover, our internet radio show is getting 60,000 downloads a week, and we are doing guest slots on XM and Sirius sattelite radio in the next few weeks. The Rub is celebrating our 5 year anniversary at Southpaw in July. It is still so strange to me when I get stopped in the street by fans who recognize me, or asked to sign posters at shows - I really don't feel like that dude. But I'm really happy and proud of what we've accomplished so far and I'm amazed by all the opportunities that are coming along this year. - Ayres Sean Dorgan took pictures of Tittsworth, Ayres & Zebo at Smartbar in Chicago. Scott Furkay took pictures of Tittsworth, Ayres, Wax Romeo and Smalltown DJs in Calgary. And here are all the pictures from the tour in one place.
