Hi folks,

Lots going on here.  It's been a great couple weeks.  I was down in Arizona for a week.  Mesa, to be exact. Joel Plaskett, who's producing my new record, and I went down to mix at this great studio called Flying Blankett Recording (www.flyingblanket.com).  It was rad.  Bob Hoag, a legendary dude, runs the joint.  He's the guy who recorded Joel's record, La De Da, a few years back.  He's a great guy, wicked sense of humour and a habit of dressing in only clothing from the 1940s.  Anyway, he and Joel mixed the record, while I kind of casually oversaw the process and playing basketball whenever I got a couple minutes here and there.  I'm really excited by how it turned out. The gear down there was wild.  The same console that Radiohead recorded "The Bends" on.  Plus they had this little side car console that was once owned by the Travelling Wilburys! Insane.

Anyway, I'm hoping some of that magic was transferred into my tuneage. I'm thinking it may have cause things are sounding pretty darn sweet.

Since then I was in Toronto to perform at the Great Canadian SongQuest concert at Glenn Gould Studio at CBC.  Great night.  Got to share the stage with a bunch of Canada's finest.  That concert will be on CBC radio and on the Bold TV network in late January (the 21st and 22nd I think).

Now, I'm chilling and trying to settle into the vacation grooving.

Shouldn't be too hard.  I hope you're all doing well.

Thanks so much for the visit,

David

ps.  Here's a photo I took really quickly of the legendary Bob Hoag before taking off.

It's been a busy fall for David Myles.
Fall has kept David Myles on the move.
Over the past few of weeks he has co-hosted the SOCAN Awards in Toronto with Barney Bentall and Carolyn Dawn Johnson, personally handing honours to Tom Cochrane and Gordon Lightfoot. He was also picked to represent New Brunswick in CBC's SongQuest challenge, and spent the last half of October traveling India.
To top it all off, Myles is currently putting the finishing touches on a brand new record and despite a wealth of experience in the studio, he is pleased with the sense of new this experience has brought to an otherwise familiar process.
"The last few records I made were done over an extended period of time," said Myles, "but this time around, we've booked some time and we're working within some boundaries. Everybody involved in this recording is very busy. Before, because of the way we did things recording a bit here and a little there, we were always questioning stuff. This way is more psychologically healthy. We're just going in and doing it and it's going awesome."
For this recording, Myles has chosen to work with Fredericton's Kyle Cunjak on bass and Al Jefferies on guitar, alongside the Bridgewater-born, Toronto-based drummer Joshua Van Tassel.
"It's more of a rehearsed band because these are the guys I tour with," said Myles, "so they've played the songs before and we've developed them together in preproduction. This way, we don't need as much time in the studio. We just go in and execute."
Nova Scotia's song-writer extraordinaire Joel Plaskett, has been recording and producing the entire project from his home studio in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
"We went to Memphis together last year and we spent a lot of time together here in Halifax during the basketball playoffs last season," said Myles. "At the time, I was talking about my new record a lot and he was talking about making records so eventually it just got to the point where I figured I'd ask if he would be interested in producing it. I sent him a bunch of songs I was working on and he picked out the ones that he liked and we went for it."
With most of the recording under his belt now, the next few weeks will include a trip to Arizona where Myles and Plaskett will be mixing the new songs together.
"That should be really cool," said Myles. "We're mixing it at the same place he recorded La De Da and it will definitely be nice to spend some time in the heat."
Racking up further Air Miles (no pun intended), Myles will return to Toronto to perform his song for CBC in mid-December before taking a break for the coming holidays. After that, he'll no doubt be preparing to tour his new recording.
"As it looks right now, I'm going to go to Toronto to play the Hopewell Rocks song with Kyle and Al. It will be fun to take the New Brunswick contingent up there and rock Toronto. That's December 15 and I think that's my last trip until after Christmas."

Hi folks,
It's been a great week.  I recorded my New Brunswick CBC SongQuest song about the Hopewell Rocks.  Had a blast back in Fredericton recording it with my great friends Kyle Cunjak and Alan Jeffries.  We took over a small clothing store downtown (thanks to ReNeu Boutique) and with the genius engineering skills of Brad Perry made it happen in one night.  Wicked.  It was a late one but it worked.  The next day Brad mixed the tune and within a few days it hit the airwaves. I'm really happy with it.  It's a fun one to play and sing.  Over the last week it's been played on CBC quite a bit and is now available on itunes to purchase here (http://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/cbc-radio-2s-great-canadian-song/id342127202).
In other news, I was lucky enough on Monday night to co-host the SOCAN awards at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.  It was amazing.  I co-hosted with Barney Bentall (who's one of the coolest dudes ever) and Carolyn Dawn Johnson (also wicked).  I got to present awards to Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Cochrane, 54-40 and Glass Tiger!  It was wild.  I was terrified but it worked out.
Anyway, for this week I thought it would be appropriate to include a photo from my trip to the Hopewell Rocks.
Talk to you soon,
thanks for the visit,
David

Hi everyone,

It's been a busy couple of weeks. The record is in full effect now. We've been tracking for the last while and it's going great. Having a wicked time and I'm really excited about how it's shaping up.  Kind of got a Fleetwood Mac vibe going on at times.  I can dig. Anyway, right now, I'm taking a bit of a break from that project to delve into another.  As you may know, I'm the lucky one to have been chosen to represent New Brunswick in CBC's SongQuest challenge.  It means that I have been commissioned to write a song about the Hopewell Rocks.  I'm pleased to say the song is written (and I think it's pretty darn swell, no pun intended) and tomorrow we're laying it down.  I decided it was only right to come home to Fredericton to record it and to stop on the way to see the Hopewell Rocks! What a day. I took some photos and I promise I'll attach them soon.  I hope you're all doing well.
talk to you soon,

wish me luck,

thanks,

David

Hi everyone,

I'm back from perhaps the wickedest trip of my life.  I was in India for the last two and a half weeks of October and it was a beauty.  Had a great time.  What a fascinating and exciting place to visit.  Spent about 4 days in Mumbai, down to Goa for 5 days then down to Kerala in the far south of India for 5 more days.  Brilliant.  Thanks to Anamitra and Preeti for inviting me to their wonderful wedding (the reason for the trip) and to our incredible hosts Jaideep and Becca.  I put together a little video of clips taken on my camera.  The music is that of my good friend and drummer Joshua Van Tassel (www.joshuavt.com).  Check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ullEscmVdBw

In other news, I am very pleased to let you know that I have been chosen to represent New Brunswick in the Great Canadian SongQuest on CBC http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/songquest/).  I'm honoured.  Thanks to everyone who voted.
I'll be writing a song on the Hopewell Rocks (it was the location in New Brunswick that was voted the winner).  It should be fun. I'll keep you posted.

Right now, I'm the depths of record making.  I started making my new record three days ago.  So far so good.  It's been going really well.  The band is kicking butt and working with Joel Plaskett (who's producing the record) has also been a blast.  He's one heck of a hard working dude and has more ideas than imaginable.  Very fun.
Anyway, I best be off.  I've got some hits to lay down!!

Thanks so much for the visit.

Hello from India!,
I just wanted to send a quick note from the road.  I've been here for the last 9 days or so and it has been nothing short of amazing.  I came over here for the wedding of a good friend of mine.  That started the day I arrived and just finished yesterday.  A full week of good times! It took weddings to a whole new level.  A night cruise on the Arabian Sea from the Gateway of India in downtown Mumbai, playing a cricket match (for the first time!), being involved in a choreographed Bollywood dance for the night of the wedding itself, and eating more delicious food than I thought imaginable.  Wow.  So far so good.  Once I'm home and have a bit more time to fill in the blanks I will but for now I thought I'd let you know the trip is going swimmingly.  We're in Goa (the site of the wedding) for a few more days of downtime. Mostly cruising around on rented scooters and swimming as much as possible. It's a blast.  On Friday we head to Kerala for a bit then back to Mumbai and eventually home.  Sorry I can't attach any photos this time but I promise to include lots soon.
Thanks for the visit. I hope you're all doing well.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know I'm in the running to represent New Brunswick in the Great Canadian SongQuest that CBC Radio 2 is presenting.  The contest will choose one songwriter from each province to write about a particular place in that province.  I'd love to be the one chosen from New Brunswick! So, if you want help make that happen you can go to http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/songquest/ and vote for me!  Thanks so much.

I hope you're all doing well.  Things are going great here.  Started working away on the new album with my band and Joel Plaskett (who is producing) and today I'm headed to India for three weeks!

Thanks again,

Take care,

David
NOTE: Voters have from today until Friday, Oct. 23, at 12 a.m. ET, to choose from a shortlist of the most popular places from each province and territory, and the artists they'd like to see create the song for those locations, by visiting www.cbc.ca/radio2. Once voting closes, the final 13 artists have four weeks to compose and record an original song, inspired by the most popular Canadian location from their province or territory.

Hi folks,
The record is now underway.  Had a great week here in Halifax.  The whole band came together for four days with Joel Plaskett, who will be producing the record, to work on arrangements and start getting an idea of how things are going to unfold.  It was truly wicked.  That Plaskett character is one talented dude.  We worked away in his Scotland Yard Studio, recorded demos and had a great time.  Things are looking and sounding good.  Now, it's just a matter of laying it all down when we get back together in November for a couple weeks. I can't wait.
For the last three days, however, I've been battling a cold.  Major drag.
Thanks for the visit. I hope you're all doing well.
Talk to you soon,

David

Starting to feel better today though.  Thankfully, cause I'm heading to India on Monday for three weeks!!  I'm so excited about it.  A good friend of mine, Anamitra Deb, is getting married and I couldn't imagine a better reason to go visit a country I've always wanted to see. Not sure how much I'll be updating my website while I'm gone but I'll try. In any case I'll take lots of photos that I'll be sure to share when I get back.
