Review of PSYCHO SIDESHOW Jan.17/09 at the Railway Club by VOODOO BILL: All I can say is that if you live in Vancouver and you like it loud, and you weren't at the Psycho Sideshow -you fucked up. Mick and the boys managed to pull off not one, but two sets as The Deadcats AND their alter-egos the Kon Tikis. Grimm Hymm and the Horrors took to the stage in between and -fuckin 'ell mate!- Chaos and one hell of allot of fun was had by all. How much fun? Even I had to have a little skank. Coming up, of course, a quadruple (!!!) bill of the Voodoo for U: Deadcats, Kon Tikis, Grimm Hymm and the Horrors and, last but not least 'Wonderbum' herself Jenny Magenta and the lovely, the talented, the delicious....Darla DeVine -both, incidentally, as part of the Dark City series.

Review from RAZORCAKE magazine. L.A.

THE DEADCATS:
Feline 500: CD
Flying Saucer Records

The whole psychobilly thing is a bit of a mystery to me. I like the tunes for the most part, but hate all the trapping and attitudes that go along with it. Well, I’m not here to review an entire genre here, so let’s talk about the music. The Deadcats have been at it for years and I suppose that I might have a bit of a bias towards them since they do hail from my part of the world. The fact remains that they were out there doing this long before every Tom, Dick, and Douchebag had a pompadour and creepers. This record is right up there with the rest of their work. Catchy, creepy, and easy to move your feet to, they manage to refrain from the over the top howling of newer contemporaries such as Tiger Army or Nekromantix. Throwing in a cover of the Young Canadians’ legendary "Hawaii" can’t hurt either.

Well It might sound surprising if you listen to the Deadcats, but their influences go as far as traditional country according to singer Mick Nitro. Of course this is only one of the influences and stuff like Surf & old time Punk mixed with a good portion of rockabilly makes the picture perfect. Deadcats are still one of the major Canadian Psychobilly bands that are around these days and their balanced mix of the above-mentioned genres makes it a perfect combo to throw in a bash.

Opener "Peggy Suicide" is a typical Psycho tune with tongue in, cheek humor. While their music is more rockabilly then most psycho bands, the voice of Mick Nitro is still gritty and raw. But still the band know how to travel on the narrow line of psycho, crossing from time to time the border that defines the genre. "Fixen For A Vixen" the third tune of the album is one of these tunes that deliberately go into another territory. "Frank-N-Stein Shuffle" is ahell of a tune that is definitely influenced by the Cramps and a cover like "The Rumble" (original by Link Wray) proves these guys aren't narrow minded when it comes to their music. Another Link Wray tune included on this album is the powerful "Jack the ripper" with traces of the classical "Sabre dance" in it. However the most surprising song on this album is without doubt the country drenched "Barstool". A typical country outfit including a Lap Steel guitar. The tune for Hawai-Five-O is nicely recycled in Hawaii, a song that resembles more or less to the style of Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies

After 12 years of activity the Deadcats are still alive and kicking and if it's true what they say about cats & their nine lives then these guys have 5 more albums to make before they can lay down and rest for eternity. With their fourth album "Feline 500" the cats proved themselves still on the top of the Canadian scene and that's more then enough for the fans of the band.

The cats are hard at work locked in a bunker in East Vancouver, churning out the new Deadcats album. It'll feature 16 or so songs, most of them originals, and the new line-up featuring the dual lead guitars of Chopper & Gorehound, the stompin' drums of Kermit Von Munster, and the upright bass of Mick. Look for a Springtime release and a Canadian tour to follow! Negotiations are also on for the Deadcats to appear in Europe, and in the U.S. of A. later on!
