CD REVIEW
RIOT TORN CITY
DUN2DEF

Release Date: June 09
Recording Date: Dec 2008
Recorded At: Jigsaw Studios
Engineered By: Tom Savage

Formed in 1996 and know as "77" the band changed their name to Dun2Def in 2001. Personnel may have come and gone but the heart of the band has always pumped blood of the purest punk. In their time they have played (and indeed still continue to do so) with many of the "Old Skool" bands e.g. UK Subs; The Varukers; The Vibrators; Demob; Angelic Upstarts; GBH to name but a few!

Riot Torn City, consisting of 11 tracks, (one a cover of the UK Subs RIOT), is due for release in June and marks the current line ups first joint recording project as Ferret(VOX) is the only surviver of the band's last album. So has this meant a new direction?

For the answer to that question you will have to buy a copy and find out for yourself. What this I hear you cry, a cop out? Far from it. The band would have evolved since the last album anyway, new personnel always add new ingredients in to the mix. So I guess a more accurate question is how much of a new direction does this latest offering take? That's what you need to make up your own minds about!

The intro of LESS THAN NOTHING certainly indicates what ever follows you will be on firm ground a feeling further confirmed by the pounding drum beat and the excellent bass work that provides the drive and energy from which the rest of the song feeds.

YOU'RE A DISEASE follows and a is a decent slice of OLD SKOOL punk. Drums and Bass once more are the core around which the rest of the song forms and is embelished with some good 'edgy' guitar sounds and its overall sing-a-long quality.

HEADZ is more of the same.Simple in construct it may be but this doen't diminish the drive and the power. Good on CD but a song that will be dynamite live.

WE KNOW WHAT is an unbashed anthem with a backward glance at how it was back in the day going on to extol the virtues of the punk ethos "So we stand. Side by Side. Never to be taken for a ride. We are brothers arm in arm. None of us will come to any harm." proclaims the song, a sentiment thats hard to argue with.

RIOT TORN CITY. Title track. A great track. But. And the but was something I had difficulty putting my finger on. The opening bass riff sets out the songs stall from the first note, the guitars and drums on the rest of the intro support and develop the opening wonderfully, the combination of drums, bass, and guitars through out the song are good and the choruses are excellent. Its the main vocal that seems to sit a bit at odds. I think its because it sounds a bit TOO much like its been recorded in a studio. Yes I know it WAS recorded is studio. But I feel personally that its sanitized the vocal just a tad too far removing the natural energy that certainly would be there in a LIVE situation. Judge for yourself when you take a listen. Remember this is my personal view, and that I do like the song. It's just my humble opinion that the vocal sounds a bit over produced in places.

DRINKING AND FIGHTING. Standard googd quality old skool punk, well performed, and another that I'm sure will be a winner live. It's my least favourite track on the album. But then there will be those that it's one of the best tracks on offer. That's fine. Individuality is what this is all about.

1979. If this song were a stick of rock you would see SPIRIT OF PUNK written right through it. This nugget of nostalgia will take many of us old back to the halcion days of our youth. Colouring your hair with what was ever available in your mums kitchen cupboard and with none of the hair gels available today, using a range of homemade solutions to make your hair stand up... those were indeed the days!

CROWDED ROOM. A song that has really kept that "live" vibe. Bags of attitude, edge and power. Fantastic. One of my 'songs of the album'.

RIOT. Playing a cover is always a difficult one. Normally you would want to put your own 'stamp' on it and not just do a note for note rip off of the original. However, when the raw material is rather special, it doesn't need or in fact stand up to over working. The band pull off a difficult job here and do it well.

WHERE WHERE YOU is another unashamed look back at the way the scene used to be "...playing packed houses every night, back in the day. Now all we've got is an empty pub, the groupies are old and grey..." it goes on to highlight the apathy that blights the modern scene and asks the very poigniant question "...what you gonna do when it all comes crashing down? what are you gonna do when there's no one else around?.." Excellent stuff and one that has me singing out loud every time I hear it! This is another track where I felt that the main vocal was just a bit too 'produced' but not quiet as much as on the title track but even this doesn't stop it being one of the best songs on offer.

BARGAIN BOOZE - They say save the best 'til last, and there are a few tracks here that could just as easily claimed this spot using that selection criteria, but BARGAIN BOOZE is just one of those songs that you know is gonna work well as a set closer or a closing album track. Pure class. Pure Punk. Pure Pleasure!

All the songs with the exception of RIOT are written by the band. RIOT (Harper, Butler).

DUN2DEF are

FERRET - VOX
ASH - LEAD GUITAR
CHRIS - RHYTHM GUITAR
TOM AK - BASS*
ROB - DRUMS

*CHRIS B played bass on tracks 4.WE KNOW WHAT; 6. DRINKING AND FIGHTING; and 11. BARGAIN BOOZE

In summary, a great piece of work that the band can feel justifiably proud about, but don't just take my word for it, when it goes on general release, get a copy! And I am now looking at all the various gig dates to see when the earliest opportunity is when I can catch these boys live.

"PUNK AS" WEBSITE REVIEW BY MATT

http://www.punkas.com/riottorncity.html

Punk rock has become an increasingly complicated genre with arbitrary rules over what constitutes 'being punk' and very specific politics and social consciousness applied to it. Sometimes, it is refreshing just to cut things back to the purity of distorted guitars playing power chords over 4/4 rhythms with lyrics about drinking and having fun. In that regard, Dun2Def most definitely deliver.

The UK act may be saddled with a truly awful band name, but that is easily forgiven in the face of material such as Riot Torn City. This is a blast of old school, fuck-off punk rock with big choruses and sneering writ large. The album has 11 songs that rattle by in 30 minutes, so it does not outstay its welcome, the band wisely aware of the fact that this sort of material is best enjoyed as a sugar rush.

This is music to drink to, particularly the monstrous sing-along of closer "Bargain Booze", with its chorus, "We're all fucked up, covered in shit tattoos/Spending all our money at Bargain Booze" – one song which surely must be huge live in a sweaty pub. "1979" is a similarly anthemic drink-along, as is the excellent "You're A Disease".

Surprisingly deft guitar solos are scattered through in a tasteful manner, but some of the power is eroded by somewhat tinny production values, particularly where the clean guitar tone is at the forefront. The other drawback is that the stripped-back nature of the lyrics sometimes strays into the realm of childish simplicity.

Perhaps the clearest definition of the Dun2Def sound is that a cover of the UK Subs' "Riot" is dropped into the mix and feels completely at home.

A punchy blast of old school punk rock, Riot Torn City is a hugely enjoyable slab of down 'n' dirty catchy tunes. Check it out.

“Dues Ex Machina”
is a split EP shared by British punk rockers Dun2Def and Destructors666, both letting us preview future releases. Dun2Def has a back history to 1996, first as “77” and since 2001 with their present name. They describe their music as old school punk and nothing could be more right. The angry approach and the conscious lyrics of their three tracks on this EP show some music connections with early Clash and partly even The Jam.

DUN2DEF / DESTRUCTORS 666 “Deus Ex Machina” CD

Rowdy Farrago

One of the best splits to come out with the Destructors 666 and A.N. Other! I’ve always liked Dun2Def and their three tracks on this CD are just further enhancing their credentials as a decent punk band. Their third track is actually a cover of “Riot” by the UK Subs and for that alone they get punk points. The D666 have four tracks on the split, of which, two are old Destructors songs (They never credit one I’ve noticed over the last few releases of splits with other bands!), one is GBH’s “Diplomatic Immunity” – Nowhere near as good as the GBH song itself but a good attempt and the last one is a D666 compilation. A great split C
D and one I’ve played load.

SCANNER ZINE CD REVIEW
DUN2DEF/ DESTRUCTORS 666 - Deus Ex Machina
{Rowdy Farrago} Yet another split EP from the DESTRUCTORS camp. DUN2DEF kick things off with two originals and a cover of the UK SUBS ‘Riot’. It’s well-produced, well-played mid-tempo UK Punk not unlike a mix of GUITAR GANGSTERS and early NEWTOWN NEUROTICS. The band is a good match for the DESTRUCTORS, which plays two originals and a cover also - this time ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ by GBH. As expected, this is more of the band’s usual Garage Rock played with an injection of Punk Rock and these tracks could well be the fastest stuff the band has recorded so far. It’s OK I guess, but I’d like to hear something from the DESTRUCTORS that has a little more substance than a steady stream of split EPs. (27.04.09)

ATTACK FANZINE CD REVIEW
The other band, that actually is the first one out on this EP is, also British, Dun2Def. The do pretty much the same thing, although substituting some of the more rough edged parts of Destructors 666 with more sing-a-long friendly notes. Two originals and a UK Subs cover ("Riot"). It's the same here, not bad. I do however think that fans of the classic UK punk sound could make quite an evening out of a set of speakers that can take loud volume, a few pints, and this EP. ASICE ONLINE ZINE REVIEW

Dun2Def on the other hand does impress. Their two gang vocal-laden originals are old fashioned punk rock at its catchiest and their cover of the UK Subs track 'Riot' is pretty cool too.

On this short release, Dun2Def leaves you wanting more, while Destructors 666 gives the impression that they might be starting to value quantity over quality.

FUNGALPUNK CD REVIEWS

DUN2DEF/DESTRUCTORS 666 - DEUS EX MACHINA
After doing this review the fuckin' computer crashed before a draft was saved (twice in one day) so I am more than thankful that the CD under scrutiny is a classic. Dun2Def and Destructors 666 combine forces to give us 7 belting tracks that work wonderfully in unison and display two outfits taking slightly different approaches but being equally effective and impressive. With irate digits I try to get this review recorded for the third time of trying - deep breaths - here we go.......

Dun2Def open with the marvellous 'You're A Disease' a song that catches the ear on its first spin and never lets go. The subtle depths of this number enhance the longevity of the whole arrangement and I hope that this crackin' song gets the acclaim it so obviously deserves. The opening rat-a-tat-tat slips easily into a first class verse that blends beautifully into an equally classy chorus. It flows and grows in mighty stature and the entire concoction exudes the touch of a very outstanding band. The vocals rely on smooth clarity rather than gruff indecipherable anger and this works here and on all three tracks that this band showcase.....

'Drinking And Fighting' will fill the heads of the quick to judge with hints of belligerent Oi and crash, bang, wallop incitement but that is not the case. This song seems well worn and has a confidence that is borne of a unit comfortable in the production of top notch tuneage. A retro feel and a modern day delivery combine to succeed and we round off this bands three track triumph with a cover of a UK Subs classic. ....

'Riot' is a wonderful moment in the Subs successful history and to attempt a cover, and have the temerity to add ones own style, is taking a major gamble to say the least. Dun2Def pull off the task with real ease and rather than imitating Harpers raucous enthusiasm the vocalist here does it his way and by Jove comes good. The music is exactly like the original and expertly put across and when coupled with the unique gob of the frontman you can't help but rate this as one of the best covers of all time. The Bullet Kings have just covered another Subs gem, namely 'Saints And Sinners' and that was a real smart output but this is its equal and just shows the quality of band we have out there at the moment.....

Destructors 666 are one of the most productive bands around and if you need proof of this just ask Tim 'Punk4Life' Davies who I think has received approximately 20 CD's from this lot over the last few years. Admirable stuff indeed and although this is my first review for the band I am more than a little impressed. 'European Sacrifice' bursts in with heavy iron bassism before a few cool guitar twangs make way for the first verse. Great grimy vocals that are razor sharp and the whole effort has a persuasive anger and general punk inflection that is liable to please all and sundry in the spit and pogo pool. The complimentary cover that comes next seems an absolutely perfect option for this band and GBH's 'Diplomatic Immunity' is delivered with such superb brilliance I am quite taken aback and left wondering is this indeed a fuckin' cover. Again covers aren't my bag but one per band is an ideal inclusion and I really can't imagine this lot opting to do a more apt ditty. Listen to the original and listen to this - which is better - tough call ain't it - compliment enough!....

'Burning Bridges' saws its way into the action with powerhouse riffs and then let’s rip into some crackin' vocalisation. This is the most profound track by the Destructors 666 and exhibits choice talent. The pace is consistent and both verse, chorus and instrumental all work together and help create the impressive end outburst. We close with one extra track entitled 'Death Squad' which has an old school ambience with new school production. The rumbling bass adds the meat that the other players can build upon and again it is another winning piece of unaffected orthodox punkology. ....
Well 2 excellent bands here knocking out more brilliant punk rock for a waning scene that has a distinct lethargy that really lets down bands of this stature. Once again the message is 'wake up you bastards and keep supporting the scene' - the only option is to 'fuck off' and you wouldn't want to do that would you? So buy now!

Review: Dun2Def/Destructors666 Deus Ex Machina split CD....

Published Date: 19 March 2009 ....

By Paul Benton....

DESTRUCTORS666 split CDs are like waiting for a bus in the city – if you miss one there'll be another one along in a week or two.....

For a couple of years now, Rowdy Farro Records, brainchild of Destructors666 mainman Allen Adams, has been giving city and non-city bands alike a chance to get their songs out and share a platform with his baby.

Dun2Def hail from Milton Keynes, but don't hold that (or their football team) against them. They share drummers with Destructors666, as is usual in the incestuous nature of the punk rock scene, and offer up three tracks of rocking street punk.

With titles such as Riot and Drinking and Fighting, you long for the glory days of council estate-born punk to banish the middle class rubbish that is emo from the punk map forever.

Destructos666's cover of GBH's Diplomatic Immunity is the best cover they've done so far – but then GBH are the best band they've covered – as Allen's vocals are stretched to the limit as the cheese grater goes to work on his voice box.

Another old Destructors song is given a noughties revamp and, the now customary secret song has some very bad language on it.

Seems there's plenty of life in the old dogs yet.

8 out of 10

OXBLOOD Oi
Just picked this up at a gig last week. Never had Dun2Def down as an Oi or Street Punk band but fuck me this is awesome!!!
First track "You're a Disease" has such a catchy chorus I can't get it out of my head. The next track up "Drinkin' n Fightin' is just pure brickwall punk/oi call it what you want with a great singalong chorus "You think you're David Courtney, you better make sure your balls are the right size"
Their last track "Riot" is a cover of the classic UK Subs song and it more than holds it's own in my opinion. If that aint enough on this release you also get 4 tracks from the Destructors 666. I wasn't a huge fan of theirs back in the day but they got some storming tracks on here too notably their updated version of an old number European Sacrifice and the great cover of the GBH song Diplomatic Immunity . All in all a great CD 10/10 Well worth checking out both bands particularly Dun2Def as the new line up are superb live. BlackSheepRadical
