'toothpick bridge' is the third album by ist, produced by jay 'burzootie' burnett. fronted by canadian singer-songwriter kenton hall, alongside john mccourt, brett richardson and flash, the album builds on the songwriting established on 'freudian corduroy' and 'king martha' with a blend of warped canadiana and horn-driven costelloesque pop (in the good sense of the word) with special guests, the swinging laurels, melvin duffy, dorie jackson, paul swannell and john budding.

Original Review
ist - TOOTHPICK BRIDGE
The new album from the Leicester based band is released 17 August 2009 on Monkey Basket Records

ist are a band whose stock is very definitely rising. A new single, the highly catchly Pep Talk (out now) and a sparky album, Toothpick Bridge, out on the 17th August should both bring the band to a wider audience. Led by Kenton Hall (Canadian born but now based in Leicestershire) the band spin out a nice line in melodic rock with the added bonus of fabulous lyrics.

In classic album style Toothpick Bridge features fourteen songs that range from The Boys Not Right (a song about Adam Ant!) to Would You Buy A Bible From This Man and through to the very groovy Remington Steele. The band have also drafted in the legendary Swinging Laurels as their new brass section!

The ist tour kicks off this month with a showcase gig in Leicester with more dates around the UK to follow.

REVIEW: How NOT to make it in the Pop World (Diary of an almost has-been) by John Barrow

Title: How NOT to make it in the Pop World (Diary of an almost has-been)

Come put your hands together for this great memoir by John Barrow!

Who?

Exactly!

John Barrow is living proof that you can survive the dizzying heights and live the dream of near successes of being a pop idol, long before the days of our pop idol began. Whilst we struggled through the daily grind and general drudgery of life, he was rubbing shoulders with the stars on Top of the Pops (ToTP), signing with Independent Labels, mingling with the holy grail of all DJ's - John Peel, and attending roadshows. Pop heaven. In fact, for a (very short) while he was rich, famous and loved by all - especially women! Feted and fawned over like royalty. The Singing Lorries, I mean, The Swinging Laurels even appeared on Cheggers Plays Pop! Oh yes, for a while he had all the trappings that came with success, but never quite made it.

Beneath the glamour and glitz, however, far from his singing with a hairbrush days, his life was filled with broken promises, hidden expenses, breaches of contracts and even frosty looks from "her indoors" (the wife). Not to mention angry Scottish Nationaists, bunny boilers, false pregnancies, long hours of traveling and strange beds. Need I go on? I would have thought this would have been enough to send him running in the other direction, even if it was just for the sake of his sanity. But no, through thick and thin, Mr Barrow stuck it out to the bitter end.

Humour aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's fun and entertaining, and really does show how hard one works in the cut throat world of the music business.

Things not to say to John Barrow, No.1: "Hey! I saw you on telly. I bet you're rolling in it!"

.. UK FILMS AND MUSIC REVIEW

MYSPACE IS A COMMUNITY OF ARTISTIC & CREATIVE PEOPLE. NONE MORE SO THAN A MAN WHO IN A CAREER OUTLASTING MY LIFETIME HAS ACHIEVED MORE THAN THIS LITTLE REPORTER CAN DREAM OF. THE NEW BOOK 'HOW NOT TO MAKE IT IN THE POP WORLD' IS WRITTEN BY A LIGHT HEARTED LEICESTER BORN TENOR- SAXOPHONE PLAYER CALLED JOHN BARROW. NEVER HEARD OF HIM? WELL NEITHER HAD I TO BE HONEST.

THEN I READ HIS PROFILE! HOW COME I'D NEVER HEARD OF A MAN WHO HAS GRACED STAGES WITH IGGY POP, THE CLASH, BEAUTIFUL SOUTH, BANANARAMA, BOY GEORGE OR MUSICAL YOUTH? AND THAT'S BUT TO NAME JUST A FEW.

I MET JOHN BARROW HERE ON MYSPACE.COM ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO THROUGH A BAND CALLED IST THAT WERE LOOKING FOR GIGS ON THE CONTINENT.  I SAW HE HAD ALREADY WRITTEN A BOOK ABOUT HIS LIFE IN MUSIC AND HIS PERSONAL STRUGGLES TO MAKE HIS CAREER A REASONABLE SUCCESS. THERE WERE MANY MISSED CHANCES FOR JOHN. YET HE ISN'T BITTER. HE'S VERY, VERY SWEET. YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE HIM!

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. JOHNS' WORDS CAN HELP OR PREPARE THE BUDDING PROFESSIONAL. MUSICIAN - FAMILY MAN. HE'S BEEN THERE, HE'S DONE IT. LISTEN TO WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. LEARN!

JOHN STILL PERFORMS WITH A BAND CALLED 'IST' AND I'M POSITIVE THIS BOOK ISN'T THE LAST WE'LL HEAR FROM HIM AND HIS MATES. BUT TO HAVE WRITTEN THESE MEMOIRS (SOME HAPPY, SOME ECSTATIC, SOME QUITE PAINFUL) IS A GREAT CREDIT TO HIS THOROUGH APPROACH TO CREATIVE WORK. BRAVO MATE!

A MUST HAVE READ FOR MUSICIANS & CREATIVE ARTISTS!

BUY THE BOOK! IT'S THE BEST FEW QUID YOU'LL SPEND THIS WEEK! AND MINE EVEN CAME WITH A PERSONAL NOTE FROM JOHN WISHING ME A PLEASANT READ. AND IT CERTAINLY IS! SO STOP READING THIS AND START READING THAT!
