I have been considering this for a while, but the last 24 hours has reminded me that internet security should not be an afterthought.

I have antivirus, anti spyware and firewall. And that's all good, but that's not the issue. The issue is what I didn't have. I didn't have anti Malware.

Quite frankly, I have to admit, that even though I have over 10 years experience in the IT field, I was unaware of how vulnerable I was to the threat of malware (malicious software). Most are aware of the threat of computer viruses and spyware. But Malware is really broader than that. There are worms, trojan horses and dishonest adware. However, in my opinion, the one that is worse than all the rest is the "rootkit". That's what I spent the last 2 days trying to remove.

A rootkit is insidious because it attacks your computer at the lowest level. When you have a virus, your antivirus software runs at a level that the virus can't avoid. The virus doesn't have a chance. On the other hand, the rootkit becomes the 'Administrator' of your entire computer. And to make things worse, this rootkit will then cloak/hide itself, so that you don't even know it's there. The only evidence, that I had that something like this was going on, was the inexplicable loss of performance on my PC. In an idle state, 40% of my memory was being used. Nothing was responding. The screen would freeze. I would have to repeatedly use the power button to hard boot my system.

I don't think this was about accessing my personal information. I believe that for a time my computer was highjacked. This criminal was piggy backing on my computer to do God knows what. Thankfully, I was able to boot him out using some free software. (I mention it at the end)

My point is this. As responsible internet users, we(I) should take care to protect our information, our assets and we should take care to not become unwitting accomplices with those who look to do harm to others. Just as people can become at risk for illness due to carelessness, this internet environment becomes ill, when we, the users, don't protect ourselves.

OK. The sermon is just about over. I encourage you all to be part of the solution by locking the predators out. Malware is here to stay but there are things we can do to protect ourselves and others. The following list is not exhaustive, but it covers major areas of vulnerability.

Antivirus - prevent most viruses from entering the computer and remove the viruses that get through.
Antispyware - prevent most spyware from entering the computer and remove the spyware that get through.
Firewall - Software and/or hardware that acts as your 'door man'. Whatever leaves or enters your computer has to come through the firewall.
Anti-Malware - prevent most malicious software from entering the computer and remove the malicious software that get through.

p.s. The rootkit I was infected with is called "Anitvirus XP 2008". I used the MalwareBytes free software to clear up the problem. www.malwarebytes.org (not an affiliate).

What can you do to protect yourself?

Nobody cares about your future more than you do. So check it out. Search the web. Contact the BBB. Get the opinion of successful entrepreneurs.
(IMPORTANT: Only consider the opinion of successful entrepreneurs. Honestly, if they have a J.O.B., how much credence should you give to their thoughts on business.)

Before investing in an online business, read their Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, Terms of Use, User Agreement. I know it's not scintillating reading, but it is important to know what you can expect from them and what they expect of you.

Answer these questions about each opportunity you consider:

1. How long have they been in business? Where are their offices? Do they provide a way for you to contact them? Do they respond to your email or phone calls?

2. Is there a legitimate product or service for sale? Is the profit potential worth the effort?

3. Do they provide systems to automate the tedious and time consuming aspects of running a business.

4. Do they provide training, mentorship and support?

Note: the questions above are not extensive but should give you an idea of what you should consider. Imagine the benefits of your ideal business and formulate your own questions based on that.
