"King Louie" here...Well, I haven't blogged for a long time, but I thought I'd gab about KL & BJ's Waterfront Blues Festival set and overall experience.  In short, it was great!  We played from 5:15 to 6 pm on opening night (Thursday, 7-2-09).

Actually, there was a technical glitch right off the top--the bass (which I play on the B-3) was ringing badly.  But we took a moment between the first two tunes and fixed the problem, and things went smoothly thereafter.  Incidently, KL & BJ's set was featured on that evening's KGW news broadcast, and The Oregonian included three photos of the group in its on-line WBF photo essay.

One highlight of our set was "Until The Real Thing Comes Along."  James sings this obscure standard beautifully on our recent CD release ("Around The World"), but having special guest pianist Janice Scroggins add her touch to the tune really put it over the top.  Not typical blues festival fare, but one of the great things about the WBF is the variety you hear.

Speaking of that, on the festival's closing night, I heard a wonderful young soul singer from back East, Ryan Shaw.  Ryan really channels all-time greats like Otis Redding and Donny Hathaway.  If you haven't heard him, you should check him out (he's on MySpace).  Too bad Ryan and Baby James didn't get a chance to hear each other.  I know they'd be instant friends & admirers.

BTW, I'll post some video that my wife Tracy took of our WBF set soon.  Already, you'll notice a few festival photos added at the end of the photo slideshow. [Here's one]

Well, enough blogging for now.  If you've got a KL & BJ jones, check out our schedule to see where we're playing next.  In addition to our usual Jimmy Mak's dates, we're going to be logging some driving miles this summer, playing at cool festivals in Ellensburg, Estacada, St Helens, etc.

Yes, King Louie & Baby James' new CD, "Around the World; Live At Jimmy Mak's," is finished, and we're very pleased with the final product.  It was sent off for manufacture about a week ago, and we should have copies in plenty of time for our November 15 CD release gig @ Jimmy Mak's.  Whew!

We've uploaded three sample tracks here at our MySpace page for you to check out.  To further whet your appetite, here's the liner note essay, written by Oregonian critic Marty Hughley:

Jimmy Mak's ain't no chicken shack, but it's always cookin'.

Actually, it's a nicely appointed place in Portland's vibrant Pearl District, and the food's mostly Greek. Call it a calamari palace if you prefer -- thought that just doesn't have the same shang-a-lang. Because what makes the club a special place is a funky, down-home feeling that makes your muscles a little looser, your cares a little lighter, your eyes a little brighter.

You want a heavy-duty dose of that feeling? Drop by when King Louis & Baby James are in the house. The joint's full of your friends, whether you've met them yet or not, and the stew of jazz, blues and soul bubbles appetizingly from the very first notes.

Who's doin' the cookin'? The man with the recipe, Louis Pain on the Hammond B-3, locking in on the groove with drummer Micah Kassell. For that flavor to savor, it's Renato Caranto on tenor serving up the depth of the human condition in every solo. Bringing the heat on guitar, that's Eddie Martinez, who, if he weren't so humble, would need an 18-wheeler to carry around his résumé (Mick Jagger, Robert Palmer, and so on). And serving it up with style is the keeper of the flame himself, venerable veteran vocalist Sweet Baby James.

Travel around the world and you won't find many musical experiences that can make you feel like this.

People have been telling us for ages that we need a MySpace page.  So we're finally taking the plunge.  Please bear with us until we get the hang of it.  In the meanwhile, we hope you enjoy the tunes, photos, and video clips.
