With "The Bacchae," we have entered the world of Greek drama.  Here the Rebellious Players of Virginia give us a "Black Metal" version of the tale, but that only affects the musical interludes and the "Goth" style makeup and costumes.  Otherwise, this is Euripedes' scathing drama where the god Dionysus demands tribute from his native Thebes and the uptight ruler Pentheus rejects it.  Not a smart move on Pentheus' part, and he pays a brutal price.  Director Christine Lavin moves the play along like a whip, with a modern attitude but faithful to the drama's intent.  A good production of a play with Marcus Lawrence as a sneering Dionysus and Jack Powers as the morally uptight Pentheus who learns his lesson too late.
