The Music Association of Central Texas held it's monthly meeting on Monday, June 15th. For those of you that missed it, we really had a busy meeting!!
Wes was notified that Bob Austin and Sonny Mac had decided to resign as board members. We want to thank both Bob and Sonny for their time as board members and for their ongoing support of MACT.
The board got together and submitted several MACT members that they thought would make good board members. At the board meeting on Monday, the new board members were voted in.
We are pleased to announce MACT's newest board members:
Mike Donohue!! Mike is the bass player for Mustard Seed and Mad Edison. He also won "Bass Player of the Year" at this year's Groovy Awards.
Matt Garretson!! Matt is the front man and co-song writer for The 420 Project. He is also the founder of 3rd Degreez Productions.
We all know these two will bring so much to MACT!
River Jam 09 was also discussed. Due to unforseen circumstances, the board has voted to postpone River Jam until next year!! The River Jam committee worked their tails off and continued to run into road blocks. They are relieved the board made this decision and they are already making plans for River Jam 2010!!! GREAT JOB LADIES!!! The ONLY thing that went right was all you great musicians that were ready to step up to the plate and give your talent to help out Caritas. A HUGE THANKS GOES OUT TO ALL OF YOU!!! The board voted and MACT will still be giving a donation to Caritas of Waco this year.
The night ended with our monthly jam session!! It is so cool that the meetings and the jams are growing every month!!
Until next time...Remember... "It's ALL about the MUSIC!!"

We have had a great response to our "Topic of the Month" - "Volume and Tone". James Hurst did a fantastic discussion on this topic at our May meeting. So many people have thanked James for discussing this touchy subject, I decided to post a blog about it.
We are so fortunate here in the Central Texas area - so many restaurants that support live music. There are so many to choose from, that some of us "restaurant hop" during the week. The key word in this section is "restaurant". When people go to a restaurant, they go to eat and visit with the friends/family they went with...having live music is an added bonus!! There could be a family with kiddos, a first date, grandma's 85th birthday party, a retirement party-all kinds of possibilities of who could be in the restaurant while you are playing. They are all there to eat and to socialize. If they can't talk to each other, chances are, they will not be going back. Let's face it, the way a restaurant pays a band is by selling food and drinks. If the waitresses can't hear to take an order, there just might be a problem.
Loud can be good if it's clear! That goes for restaurants, bars, outdoor events, or whatever. There is nothing worse that distortion due to being too loud!! It doesn't matter if it is a solo act, or a full band, distortion is not good. Vocals, guitar, bass-it doesn't matter-distortion is not music!! So, you can't hear yourself on stage...maybe a monitor needs to be adjusted. Cranking yourself up should not be an option. When a full band is on stage, there are multiple players, but at that time, they are performing as a single unit. If each individual keeps turning themselves up, both distortion and feedback is sure to follow. Then, the idea of music is gone and all that is left is loud distorted noise.
This applies to all music. From jazz to heavy metal - if distortion keeps the you from understanding the vocals, or being able to tell what specific instrument is being played, you're probably turned up too loud. If one band member is over powering the rest of the band, get them to turn down. If the band keeps trying to turn up to that one individaul's level, distortion is on the way.
James had a great idea...start the show off a little softer and build up during the night. What a great compliment it would be to be asked to turn up for a change.

After many conversations, it has been brought to my attention that I failed to include several categories on the Groovy Award nomination ballot.
I am pleased to announce that there are four new genre specific categories in the "Band of the Year" section. POP, JAZZ, HEAVY METAL, & AMERICANA have been added to the Groovy Award ballot! The nomination ballot has been amended on the website - www.mactmusic.com - you can print off a ballot from there.
If you have already printed the ballots off, please write in these additional categories at the bottom of the ballot - your ballot will count! If you have already mailed in your ballots, we will have ballots available at the next meeting. You can fill out another ballot and drop it in the box on February 16th.
I am sorry for any inconvienence this may cause. As Wes pointed out at the January meeting, the nomination process is undergoing many requested changes. Adding these categories is a simple quick fix to try to make this year's Groovy Awards the best show ever.
Keep those ballots coming in! It's so exciting to hear about our mailbox being full!! Don't let your favorite local artist get left out!!!
See ya at the Groovys, Angie Hardin

As we all know, the economy has changed and familys are starting to suffer. More and more people are needing assistance than ever before.
Caritas of Waco, our local food bank, is also seeing the changes. Caritas needs help keeping their shelves full. Every day, more and more people are in need of so many things. Caritas can help a family not be hungry. When a family has to decide to pay their rent, or buy groceries for their children, that is a very hard decision to make.
M.A.C.T. is going to start having food drives at their monthly meetings! When you go to the grocery store, please remember to put an extra non-perishable item in your cart and bring those items to the meeting. If we all pull together, we can make a difference. It may be you, or one of your family members that need assistance one day.
If you would like more information, or need assistance yourself, please contact Carolyn at (254)753-4593 x241. Monday - Friday
Caritas of Waco is located at: 300 S. 15th Street, Waco, Texas 76701
Visit their website www.caritas-waco.orgThough we cannot solve all the problems of the world today, we can help a family be able to put dinner on the table.

I am so pleased to say that I have been asked so many questions about the Groovy Awards show that will be held on March 26th.
I thought I would try to list some of the most frequently asked questions and answer them to the best of my ability. Here we go...
Q. HOW DO I NOMINATE SOMEONE? This is an easy one!! Go to our new website - www.mactmusic.com - there, you will find a page called "Groovy Ballot". There is a printable ballot link on that page. Fill it out and mail it to M.A.C.T., P.O. Box 2343, Waco, Texas 76703. You can also bring the ballots to one of our monthly meetings.
Q. ARE THERE ANY QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO BE NOMINATED? Our website can help you there, too. www.mactmusic.com - again, go to the "Groovy Ballot" page. Click on the "Guidelines for Nominations". These guidelines were made so that the nomination process didn't get too crazy. A good example of this is a country band that plays a few rock songs at the end of the night would not qualify in the rock category.
Q. HOW MANY BALLOTS CAN I FILL OUT? There is no limit on how many ballots you can fill out. In the past, I have heard of different bands getting their fans to fill them out at gigs. I've also heard of bands sending ballots out on their email lists. The more participation we have the better!!
Q. HOW LONG IS M.A.C.T. TAKING NOMINATION BALLOTS? We will be accepting nomination ballots until February 28, 2009.
Q. I'VE NEVER BEEN INVOLVED WITH M.A.C.T. BEFORE. HOW CAN I GET MY WORK TO THE MEMBERSHIP SO THEY CAN HEAR WHAT I DO? We are encouraging everyone to bring cd's to the meetings to hand out. It doesn't have to be the fancy wrapped merch that you sell at your gigs. Burn a few songs from your computer on to a cd. That is a small price to pay to get your work out there. promote-promote-promote!!!
Q. I DON'T KNOW WHO TO NOMINATE IN ALL THE CATEGORIES. WILL MY BALLOT STILL BE COUNTED IF I LEAVE SOME BLANK? Yes it will. But we would like to see the ballot filled out completely. We all know that we have the habit of "sticking to our own" when it comes to music. If you have a Saturday night off, you go see a band you like. What I'm doing to fill out my ballot is visiting myspace friends! There are over 850 music friends on this page and they cover every genre of music. Take a minute and visit some myspace pages...you'll be amazed at what you hear. Central Texas has it going on!!
Q. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NOMINATION BALLOTS AFTER THE FEBRUARY 28TH DEADLINE? All the ballots will then be counted by the "Ballot Counting Commitee". At that time, the top 5 nominations will make it to the final ballot for voting. There has to be a minimum of 3 nominations for each category for that category to make the final ballot.
Q. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU MADE THE FINAL BALLOT? That's where I come in. I will be the one to notify everyone who made the final ballot. Hopefully that will be done the first week of March.
Q. WHO GETS TO VOTE FOR THE WINNERS? All current members of M.A.C.T. get to vote for the winners of the Groovy Awards. If you would like to join M.A.C.T., visit the website - www.mactmusic.com - there is a page to join M.A.C.T. You can also join M.A.C.T. at our monthly meetings. Become a member and vote for your favorite artists!!
Q. WHO COUNTS THE BALLOTS? Current M.A.C.T. members count the nomination ballots and the winner ballots. The "Ballot Counting Commitee" consists of members, appointed by the Board of Directors, that are known to be unbiased.
Q. WHEN DOES THE VOTING FOR THE WINNERS HAPPEN? At our March meeting. That would be March 16, 2009!! Each current member will get one voting ballot to fill out. The secretary will check your name off as you receive your ballot.
Q. HOW DO I KNOW WHO WINS? Come to the Groovy Awards show!! Everyone finds out that night. The only people that know who has won before that night are the members on the "Ballot Counting Commitee".
Q. DO YOU HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO BE NOMINATED? No, you do not have to be a member to be nominated, or to win. You do have to be a current member to vote for the winners.
I hope this helps everyone out some. If I have left out a question that you have, shoot me a message. You just might have a question that someone else has, too.
See ya at the Groovys!!

Current mood: fabulous
Well, we had our annual Music Association of Central Texas Christmas party on Monday night. For those of you who missed it, you sure did miss a good time!! I would like to thank TREFF'S for allowing us to have our party there. Also, a thank you goes to CHARLIE BROWN for running the sound for us all night long. A special thanks goes out to those who provided all the gear for everyone to use...BLAIN HENNIG for the drum kit...BOB AUSTIN for the bass rig...GENE BALLOU for keyboards...JOHN MCANALLY for a guitar rig...JAMES HURST for a guitar rig...TJ BELL for a guitar rig. Because of all of you, everyone was able to jam all night long!!! Thanks so much. I can't forget CAROLYN HURST for all the hard work she did organizing and planning to make our party a success. Thank you so much!!! Let me tell you, we sure did have a spread!!! Thanks to EVERYONE for bringing such great food!!! I can't come close to being able to thank everyone individually...there was so much food, I don't know who brought what!!! What I do know is that everything tasted so good!!! By the way, whoever brought the homemade sandwiches, I have your platter! Let me know and I will bring it to you! The night started off by CAROLYN HURST welcoming everyone to the party. She also introduced our newly elected President, WES HARDIN, and our newly elected Vice President, JAMES HURST. CAROLYN HURST has been re-elected as our Secretary/Treasurer. Congrats to all of you! Then it was time to EAT and time to JAM!!! A big thank you goes to WES HARDIN for getting the musicians up on the stage to do their thing. The JAM was just amazing! It's not often where you get to see so many musicians, with different backgrounds, get on stage and play together. Look at the pictures and you will see what I mean. Where else could you go, except for a M.A.C.T. function, to get all this at one time? If I remember correctly, there was a point where BLUES, COUNTRY, CHRISTIAN, AND ROCK were all represented on the stage at one time!!! WOW!!! None of these guys had ever played together, but you sure couldn't tell. Thanks to all of you for providing such wonderful entertainment!! As I walked around visiting and taking pictures, I couldn't help but notice all of the smiles. I know that I personally always look forward to our meetings. That is one time when we all get together. At the Christmas party, I realized something...THE MUSIC ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL TEXAS is not just a group of musicians and music lovers, we're a FAMILY! I felt such warmth in the room. So, a personal thank you to all of you for giving me that for Christmas. Well, Christmas is just around the corner and it is a busy time for all. Have a safe and music filled holiday. Merry Christmas! Angie Hardin

At the opening ceremonies Shannon Tooker sang the National Anthem with no musical backup track. This little girl and I mean in size and age showed the world how it is supposed to be done.
Toney Rogers AKA Daddy T was our master of ceremonies and he is a master of his craft. Daddy T is better known in Las Vegas, where he has performed than Waco and he like many of the other Stars of our show gave up a paying performance to help Caritas and bring in entertainment to Central Texas. Entertainment that you pays big bucks to see in the quote entertainment capitals of the country.
We started the show with Sixx, Randy Gonzalez, Marty Floyd, Darrell Fisher, John McAnally, and Terry Roller.
These star performers put on great show, singing and playing their hearts out to a tiny audience. They deserved a crowd of thousand for the show they put on. Just think they were standing on a stage being a one man show that could have wowed a show in Las Vegas and they did it for no personal gain not even their name on a poster. These are the great people that make the music scene in Central Texas better than anyplace in the World. All the entertainers at " On Stage Playin It Live" asked was what could they do to help this benefit for Caritas no one wanted to know what was in it for them.
John McAnally and Daddy T started the show rolling and kept the entertainment going not stop from Five to the close of the show John on the guitar and Daddy T on the microphone.
Before the show started Kelly Jenkins, Dave Munday, Bob Austin, Paul Fields just to name a few of the Stars of the Music and let me tell you everyone that played on the stage that night played roadie wearing themselves out loading equipment and setting up the stage, lights and sound to insure it was a great show.
The Willows where the first band up and these young people offered the best of original country folk rock music. You can not put a label on them they just played great music, Next up was Lorna Willhelm and a handful of Blues. This tight three piece group fuses jazz, blues, rock and roll and classics like nobody else. They made you sad and they made you happy.
Mustard Seed one our hottest new groups is another trio of seasoned musicians that make you think about music in another light. They take songs that you know and with their musical talents show you the tune from a different perspective.
Texas Heartbeat is not just another country music dance band, They have been pleasing audiences for decades.
If you did not get up and dance to one of their tunes, even if you are a die hard rock and roll fan, you better get to the emergency room, your heart is not beating.
Johnny Tex and the Classix, this group is not just classic they are legionary players from some of the most popular bands in the past thirty years. You were transported back to the great music of the Night Owls, the Starlights and Spider and the Satellites and new music besides the oldies.
10th Leper thundering rock and roll that was great music. But if you listened to the words they are great songwriters who celebrate their Christian faith. This is just great music that is music for its self and a message that shows not preaching but the joy that the Leper's faith puts in their lives.
Last but not least was Red Rogers and the Durty Dawgs. This is a hot three piece group that plays the classic rock of Cream and the other Great power trios. The stage is alive with the interaction between the members, it comes out like electricity and draws you in, even if you are a country music fan. The music was just plain great just a good as "famous touring bands you saw in Austin in the 60s and 70 s.
Now then if you have ever worked on a big production especially a non-profit one you know that lots of people never receive the recognitions they deserve. It is sad but true, that volunteer organizations never get everything right.
Last year Wes Hardin was the entertainer that had half his promotion left off. This year it was Daddy T.
Beside giving up a paying performance at another show and having his agent ask for his percentage of the money he was not getting for our show. We left his name off the advertisement, the one and only thing he asked for.
So what do we do to make it up to him. We give him a used trophy we found at Caritas and call it " no good deed goes unpunished" and what does Daddy T do. He accepts it just like it was offered from our hearts, it means more than a Grammy.
Now for gripes about the show.
The show was perfect. I have been to Nashville, and Las Vegas and I have not seen a better show.
Where were the live music lovers? Where were those people that say there is no good music in Central Texas there is nothing to do here, It cost to much?
Well it was here and it was great. The show admission should be $250.00 a head but we wanted everyone to be able to afford this show and support Caritas. We were not looking for a millionaire to fund this fundraiser. We wanted everyone in Central Texas to put in just a little bit and together we could work a miracle for the people who are so low they are grateful for just something to eat. But I guess that people had rather sit a home and gripe than come out have a great time and help their fellowman. But don't worry about your lack of support for a good cause: because the people that came had a great time and dug deep in their pockets to make up for you. The entertainers and all of the members the Music Association of Central Texas chipped in make sure that Caritas received the funds they need. Our musicians are not just talented people but people that care deeply about others. They help you celebrate the events of your life with music. They all could be celebrities and make the news making stupid mistakes that the gossip columns love but instead they choice to live and work among you and do their best to make you happy when you are sad and help you through life's rough patches with the gift of Music.
