Our First Commissioned Report:

"I'm Latina and I Vote" : An Examination of Latina Political Participation in Colorado

was released on Friday January 18, 2008.

This report tells us that the growing population and increase in civic egnagement among Latinas and their families will have an enormous impact on future policy decisions and electing our next leaders.

The report will also be used as the base of an LI community relations campaign to emphasize the important role Latinas can have in setting public policy.

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 48!

Oppose the So-Called "Personhood Amendment"

This fall, Colorado voters will be asked to amend our constitution to redefine "person" and to grant constitutional rights from the moment of fertilization. The amendment is vague, dangerous, and simply goes too far. It seeks to restrict women's access to healthcare, it invites government intrusion into our personal lives, and, if it passes, it's permanent.

* Under this constitutional change, a pregnant woman experiencing complications could be powerless to receive treatment for a disease or condition - like cancer - if the treatment might harm the fetus

* It could ban several of the most medically effective forms of birth control

* It could outlaw all abortions, even in the earliest weeks of pregnancy or in cases of rape, incest, or when the life or health of the woman is at risk.

* Amendment 48 would allow the government to interfere with the private, personal decisions that a woman makes with her family, her faith, and her doctor.

* While reproductive health issues like birth control and abortion can be controversial in the Latino community, we believe that each woman and her family must be free to make life decisions that are right for them.

* The proposed amendment could criminalize pregnant women by subjecting them to scrutiny and investigation if they have a miscarriage or engage in behaviors perceived as dangerous while pregnant.

* A woman's health is central to the health of her family.  The proposed constitutional change could harm women's health by allowing the government to interfere in family decision making about healthcare.

Oppose the So-Called "Civil Rights Initiative"

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 46

Amendment 46 would impact public education programs, public employment, and public small business contracting.

If Amendment 46 is passed, any public program that aims to increase opportunities for women and minorities in education or business including recruitment, training, and outreach would potentially be ELIMINATED.

This could include state and local programs that target women & minorities such as:

* Fair housing and lending programs

* Programs that increase and promote diversity in higher education

* Public school programs that expose girls and minorities to math, science, and technology professions that have long been dominated by men

* Minority and women-owned business contracting opportunities

* Gender based programs

* Pay equity for women

* Apprenticeship and training programs
